Pats: Injury news and updates

Bizarre and infuriating (generally), even as they looked great today. Patriots need as many dynamic playmakers as possible. Getting this guy experience, even just here and there, has tremendous value.

Wild speculation:

The Patriots love his talent and are trying to pound into him that he needs to improve dramatically in pass protection to see the field, and are confident that with enough pressure he’ll take it seriously so he can be a weapon later in the year over Bolden. Given Ivan Fears back and forth of hyping him up and cutting him down it seems like talent it’s the the issue, it’s dedication, effort, and a drive to step into the needed areas. Much like a child, they are alternating between encouragement and punishment to develop him. At least that’s my guess. The talent is clear.

I think the answer is... they like him... they like JJ, they like Brandon Bolden, they don't want to have 4 RBs active, so one of Rham and JJ is going to sit each week depending on matchup/practice/etc.

According to ESPN's NFL standings, the Pats currently are #9 in the AFC, first among all the 3-4 teams. The two teams directly ahead of them for the #7 spot in the playoffs are Pittsburgh (a very uninspiring 3-3) and Cleveland (4-3 but now without Mayfield, which didn't hurt them this week but surely will at some point).

The Patriots clearly have their work cut out for them, but the road to the playoffs is definitely open and accessible.

Bill's employed a very quick hook this year for most of the younger players. Fumble? Benched. Missed assignment? Benched. JoeJuan bit on the flea flicker and got benched. Wynn got beat cleanly against Dallas on a rush and was immediately benched. I don't mind the sense of desperation, and they players have seemed to respond okay to it. Some teams let their players play through and learn from mistakes--which is fine, too, Bill isn't really wired that way.

The problem with making the playoffs is that as tragic as the Chiefs season has been, they're 3-4 as well. I think it'd be a struggle for the Pats to end the year with a better record than both them and the Browns (provided the Raiders/Chargers and Bengals/Ravens don't all off a cliff). And then there's the issue of the Colts, who the Pats play head to head on the road and have an easy schedule going forward (4 games against the Jaguars, Texans and Jets yet to be played).

Belongs in a different thread but all four KC losses are conference losses. I think they finish 6-4 or 7-3 to get to 9-10 wins, but tiebreakers will be dicey for the Chiefs.

Honestly, a one year non-playoff reset wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world for that franchise. Their D is trash and they need to find a Kelce replacement at some point in the next couple of years.

Easier said than done but you may have a point. But does 9-8 and picking 16th really help that much? Unclear.

Edit Kelce is borderline HoF player. Won’t be all that easy to find the next guy.

KC will have a hard time ‘resetting’ given their cap situation. They have huge dollars invested in Clark, Jones, Mahomes, Hill, Thuney, and Honey Badger, and they are gonna give Orlando Brown a huge deal after investing several high picks in that trade. They also have a bad, if lower money, deal on the books for Anthony Hitchens. The middle class of their roster sucks.

I think they’re, practically speaking, committed to this core through 2022, and they need a huge infusion of good/decent middle class talent - including at the skill positions - over the next 1-2 off seasons.

They're not in terrible shape under the cap... they project to have more space than the Patriots for example next year, and they can save money if they really need to with some restructure/extensions on Hill and Clark if they wanted to (or I guess trade or cut) and another 8.5M in savings when they cut Hitchens.

Depends on the draft but certainly helps picking 15-16 vs. 28-29 over the course of a draft. Clearly, they’re not replacing Kelce just like we didn’t replace Gronk but they do need to figure out who their next “chain mover” is going to be. Brady had Welker, Edelman, Gronk, etc. and at some point KC will need to find the heir apparent for Mahomes’ security blanket. Having a mid 1st might make that more possible.

Yep, that's fair. The Pats certainly benefited by picking 14th in 2003 (Ty Warren) and of course the brilliant trade to end up with Wilfork at 21 in 2004.

That’s … interesting.

I had heard through the grapevine earlier this year that the Pats signed Hoyer to effectively be Mac’s QB coach – and that given COVID protocols having that person be a player as opposed to a coach allowed them to spend more time together with fewer restrictions.

No idea if that’s true but if it is, I wonder whether they think it’s time for a real backup instead of a mentor now that Stidham is healthy and Mac has 9 games under his belt.

Who's Trent Brown?
Hopefullly a guy whose calf muscle is actually healed and wont tear like an already-opened potato chip bag. (how a doc once described why I should not go hiking with a marginally painful calf strain)

Love how we have 3 guys in concussion protocol this week, but the story was that the evil, prone Mac Jones was too handsy mid fumble with a 250# DE.

Exiled
JJ Taylor to the Covid list. Also, somewhat surprisingly, Quinn Nordin has been designated to return from IR.

Insurance in case Folk's injury worsens to the point he can't go?
There's a 21 day window before Nordin has to go back on IR or the roster, in the meantime he can take some practice reps off Folk's leg. If he looks competent, maybe you have him be the kickoff guy to save more mileage on Folk, if Bill thinks he can spare the spot.

Jake Bailey is the current kickoff guy, not Folk.

Teams do this when they have a bye week during the 3 week period because there is more practice/down time. Now he can be an active participant. 21 days from now he’ll be back off the roster.

This just reminds me of how the training camp discussion was whether Nordin would beat out Folk, until that poor preseason game. Maybe he'll be a good kicker some day, but thank goodness they kept Folk
