Does that include the cap being 188M?Pats should have around $25 million in cap space now.
Yes. They had just over $17 as of yesterday after the 188 announcement. Allen’s cap hit was around $7 with no dead money.Does that include the cap being 188M?
He's too valuable at FB to line him up at TE.According to PFF, Allen is the same height and only 10 lbs more than Develin. I’d rather they just use JD at TE2
They have seventh-round pick Ryan Izzo from last year. He was considered a pretty good blocker in this mold.My guess is that he will not be back. He was a beast as a blocker in 2017, but that seemed to decline a lot in 2018. I have to think that that level of contribution can be had for a much lower number (like UDFA level) and likely with more pass-catching upside.
Yup. And he’s 29. This is his last bite at the apple and he needs to make it count. He’s been to 2 SBs and won 1. His Patriots time went exactly as he could have hoped. Now, he needs to cash in as much as he can. If he wants to come back at a reduced rate and the Pats want him, I’m all for it.Also keep in mind as a now-FA destination angle that Allen might want to do more than block which is basically all the Pats wanted him to do.
In his full 4 years as a Colt (missed one whole year), he caught 125 passes and 18 TDs. That is how he got a salary that now outstrips his value as a blocker only.
And then who plays FB?According to PFF, Allen is the same height and only 10 lbs more than Develin. I’d rather they just use JD at TE2
I think they were perfectly fine with what he contributed as a blocker and saw value in it. Now, not so much. They had a pass catching TE and he was never going to be a ‘two headed monster’ like Gronk and Sweetleaf. Yes, they probably hoped he caught more balls but stuff like this is tough as we don’t know game plans. They may have just said ‘he’s a third tackle’.I think the Pats would love to have had Allen catch more passes. The disappointment was THEIRS in his ability, or lack thereof, to contribute fluidly in the passing game.
He’s already made $29 Million in his career and is on the downside. I don’t think he’s expecting to play hard to get or that lots of teams will be throwing cash at him.Yup. And he’s 29. I was thinking for 12 personnel. And then who plays FB?
Yeah. In his first half season they were throwing to him a decent amount and his hands were TERRIBLE.Oh, I agree. My point is that the idea he'll go somewhere else that will "let" him participate in the passing game misses the point that, in New England, Allen wound up just a blocking TE. An exceptional blocking TE, for sure, but that's not the descriptor you want for a guy at that price.
Didn’t really imply that but maximizing his return would be a good idea. He’s already made $29 Million in his career and is on the downside. I don’t think he’s expecting to play hard to get or that lots of teams will be throwing cash at him.
