03/14/13 - 2013 Southern Miss Pro Day: Representatives from 10 NFL teams gathered at Southern Mississippi’s pro day on Friday, where 16 Golden Eagles players worked out. Due to a tornado that ripped through Hattiesburg in February the workout was held at Petal High School.
Jamie Collins, LB (6-foot-3 5/8, 250 pounds) - Collins stood on his numbers from the NFL Scouting Combine (he was a top performer in his position group in five events). Collins’ official 40-yard dash time (4.64 seconds) in Indianapolis is especially notable. Collins worked out as both a linebacker and defensive lineman with his hand in the dirt. He’ll have a lot of intrigued teams visit for a private workout. - Gil Brandt, NFL.com

02/27/13 - TOP 10 COMPELLING NFL COMBINE STORY LINES: 7. 0-12 teams still can have big-time talent. Jamie Collins, a DE/OLB at Southern Miss, was high on the radar of several NFL scouts and coaches I spoke to. And then Collins backed up his "freak" rep, broad jumping 11-7 -- almost a foot longer than any other LB. The 6-3, 250-pounder also had a 41.5-inch vertical. An NFL source I talked to said it's hard to find guys who are 6-2-plus and 240 who can really play, adding that "the size paradigm for NFL LBs is changing because it forces the personnel folks and coaches to project college DEs to be stand-up off the ball LBs." Collins, though, sure looked like he could be one of those guys. - Bruce Feldman, CBSSports.com

deep inside Guido territory
Collins was a dback coming into college. Was the gunner on punt team. Was a big time QB in high school. Freak athlete. Will be sub LB in coverage packages and will rush off the edge too. Very intriguing prospect.

5. JAMIE COLLINS, Southern Mississippi (6-3½, 250, 4.62, 2) - Prep QB moved to safety and finally to LB-DE in 2010. "He has major athletic ability," said one scout of Collins' LB-leading vertical jump (41½) and broad jump (11-7). "Tested off the charts. He played walkaway outside backer and as a defensive end. He can be a 'will' in a 4-3, a 'will' in a 3-4 or a 3-4 rush backer. But he's not very smart (Wonderlic of 17)." Played far better as a junior than for a winless team in '12. "He dogged it this year," another scout said. "He hated the staff, and probably was right in doing so. Need to watch junior tape. He's very athletic but not physical. Hit or miss, feast or famine." Started 34 of 51 games, finishing with 314 tackles (46 for loss), 16 sacks and 15 "big" plays (eight forced fumbles). Had three defensive TDs. "I don't think he's a bad kid," a third scout said. "But sometimes it's like talking to a brick wall. It's not that he lacks toughness. Sometimes he just disappears." From McCall Creek, Miss. "They were an awful team, and he wasn't the solution," said a fourth scout. "He was the problem. Low motor. Has tremendous up side. I don't normally bet on guys like that, but people do. He'll be gone in the first three rounds."

@cgasper: Belichick worked out Jamie Collins himself when he was in Hattiesburg, Mississippi in March. Must have liked what he saw.

It is always more fun to read player breakdowns like Liam Neeson in Taken.

STRENGTHS

Presents a long, lean frame that NFL teams look for in
a stand-up pass rusher. Quick feet and long strides help him close on
quarterbacks, move down the line to crash on runs, as well as give him the
short-area agility to move in coverage with slot receivers for short periods
despite his height and length. Short area quickness, and the ability to
redirect in an instant. Power hands at times. Capable of shedding in either
direction to contain or fill a gap. Knows to knock receivers at the line and
crossers off their routes with his strong arm extension. Has the length to wrap
up ballcarriers trying to avoid him in the backfield, as well as grab backs
running away from him.

WEAKNESSES

Lacks sand in his pants and upper-body strength to be
an every-down defensive end against NFL tackles, and gets consistently pushed
back by double teams. Inconsistent coming off the snap quickly, at times
looking like he can beat tackles with a strong first step but being among the
last moving on other plays. Motor runs cold, don't pursue plays well. Loses
track off his position in zone coverage. Can be eluded in space by quicker
ballcarriers or in the backfield by mobile quarterbacks. Must speed up his
hands to win battles against pro linemen, slow to disengage.

SackSEER likes Jamie Collins a lot. Collins has a SackSEER Rating of 97.7 percent, which means that, when not controlling for draft position, Collins is SackSEER’s eighth-favorite prospect ever. Even after controlling for projected draft position, SackSEER favors Collins to collect more sacks than probable first-round picks Jarvis Jones and Dion Jordan, as well as all of the edge rushers who were available in the 2012 NFL Draft.

Collins had a fantastic Combine workout -— a 4.64 forty, a 41.5-inch vertical leap, and an edge rusher-record 139-inch broad jump. Collins, however, is not just a workout warrior. Collins’ projection is also buoyed by his passes defensed -— Collins had 18 passes defensed in 52 games, including three interceptions.

The best case against Collins is his mediocre SRAM against a relatively low level of competition in the Conference USA. Collins is eerily similar in this respect to a recent prospect who isn’t working out so well: Dontay Moch. Moch and Collins share the same undersized 240-pound frame, the same unreal Combine numbers, and the same average-to-mediocre sack production against low-end Division I competition.

There are, however, reasons to believe that the arc of Collins’ career could bend differently than Moch’s. For one, Collins has better excuses for failing to record big sack numbers. Unlike Moch, Collins was bounced from position to position at Southern Mississippi. As a freshman, he was a defensive back. As a sophomore, he was a linebacker. Moreover, as a senior, the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles were truly terrible. The team went 0-12, and as is often the case when a team is perpetually behind, Southern Mississippi’s opponents barely passed (338 total attempts). Only six Division I teams faced fewer passes than the Golden Eagles. It is hard to sack the quarterback when your opponent spends most of the game running the ball to protect a lead, but Collins still produced his best season, recording 10.0 sacks and five passes defensed in 12 games.

 Lacks sand in his pants
I have no clue what this means.

Sounds like the guy has the chance to be a freak talent in the league. Who knows if he will ever reach it, but he sounds like he can be the pass rusher we need. Playing special teams will certainly make Bill happy as well.

God help me, but I think it means he's not physical enough to stand his ground when the tide comes his way. Gets knocked off his spot at the point of attack. Sand in pants = hard to move.

Whatevs. Goal #1 for him is going to be to get upfield. At least his first year anything beyond that they get is pure gravy.

Can anyone name a successful NFL player who has this guy's body/build?  I'm not really sure how to think about how he'll play in the NFL.

I think it means he has a lean ass, hips and thighs.

(Or, possibly, that he refuses to get isolated on an island.)

Sadly, Gary Guyton.

EDIT: Oh, you said "successful".  His body reminds me of Guyton's.

Von Miller.

He won't be Von Miller but that's probably his ideal role - a hyper athletic 4-3 OLB who rushes on 75% of passing snaps.

When I look up the measurables you're absolutely right.  He just looks so much smaller and leaner than those guys.  Obviously he isn't.

Edit: I like the V. Miller body comparison.

I'll be the first to admit I was not a Collins fan when Phragle first suggested him in the Real Fantasy draft, but the kid has really grown on me the more I've watched him on tape and considered his measurables. If he can put on 5-10 more pounds while maintaining his simply staggering explosiveness (I mean, watch the video of his broad jump, and just look at the reactions of the guys in line. You can just tell that the guy following him is going "FML" as he walks up to the line) and you're looking at a game changing talent as a pass rusher. Let this kid pin his ears back and gun for the QB, and good things will follow; while I think he will be most successful in an Irvin type role as a rookie (Phragle might disagree), if he ended up pulling a Chandler Jones on us and winning a full time job in training camp, I would not be stunned. I honestly cannot remember the last time the Patriots had a linebacker with Collins' pure physical talent...the kid really could be a monster.

Robert Mathis has done pretty well for himself at 6'2, 240

Also, I feel like the single digit numbers make guys look way thinner than they actually are so I don't blame you for that

The video I've seen hasn't been that impressive to be honest. Very rarely flashed his athleticism. Looked more like a straight line guy as a pass rusher without many moves - he may be best utilized in stunts/twists like Aldon Smith. Looked good in zone coverage but didn't see him play man-to-man on TE or RB so I'm not sure he's the coverage linebacker either. Interested to see BB's plan with him. I'd be surprised, based on what I've seen, if he's a 3-down DE. Initially, I'm guessing he comes on 3rd down in a "joker" linebacker standing up who can rush or drop. I know he's been compared to a more athletic Ninkovich but I think he needs a lot of work to get to that. I'm happy if he proves me wrong right away.

I thought 'sand in the pants' was a reference to playing angry. If I had sand in my pants I would be irritated. Maybe the comment meant that Collins plays like he doesnt get irritated.

Wearing number 91. Does that suggest he'll play DE?

I wouldn't read too much into it.  FWIW, Belichick says he'll start at LB and then they'll go from there:

Q: Jamie Collins has played all over the field. When you have a guy that can do that much, where do you start today, as step one?

BB: I’d say he’ll work primarily at linebacker but we’ll see how that goes. Again, he’s done different things and eventually as we go through the spring, we’ll look at him in different spots and see how it goes with him and also see how it goes with him relative to other players we have and what kind of groupings, just how the team breaks up, maybe where he might be able to help us or where things come together the best for him. We’ll have to put all that together as we go. I’m not sure exactly how it’s going to turn out.

On my blog, I look at Jamie Collins' debut: http://davebreaksdownfilm.blogspot.com/2013/09/jamie-collins-quiet-debut.html

"On one hand, Collins' lack of playing time is disappointing, but on the other hand it's interesting that he got in there at all. ... With Spikes out, the obvious move would be to sub Dane Fletcher in - Fletcher's more experienced, and filled in for Spikes at times in 2011. But they slid Dont'a Hightower inside and played a 3-4 look with Collins outside. ... Spikes is a free agent after this year, so this may be the base defense in 2014."

I also break down one of Collins' plays on special teams, where he nearly blocks a punt.

This is what you get when you trade down out of round 1.

He was getting blown up today, plain and simple. Hopefully something an off-season of weightlifting can fix, but hard to imagine him being any help this season.

Ryan on the other hand....

Can we end the Jamie Collins 'coverage linebacker' Experiment?  He isn't playing well enough to get on the field even with Mayo out.  He doesn't have the same freakish athleticism when compared to linebackers as he does when compared to defensive ends.  He plays about as well as you would expect a DE to play at linebacker.

Have we started the Jamie Collins "coverage linebacker" experiment? He's played two snaps each of the past two weeks.

Yes.  That was his primary role from when he was drafted until he was benched and used only on ST.

I know.  I said he isn't getting on the field.

But you know all that.  This isn't a short term topic.  I'm suggesting they give up on the coverage linebacker experiment because it doesn't and never did make any sense.
