deep inside Guido territory
QB(3)--Brady, Hoyer, Stidham
--Still keeping 3 QBs despite Hoyer not playing. Not convinced they'll cut ties with Hoyer.

RB(5)--White, Michel, Burkhead, D. Harris, Bolden
--Harris showing out gives this group even more quality depth.

FB(1)--Develin
--He is as important as ever without Gronkowski

TE(2)--LaCosse, Izzo
--Nothing changes here. Izzo showed some good hands on the catch from Brady.

WR(7)--Edelman, Gordon, Harry, Meyers, Berrios, D Thomas, Slater
--Inman is gone off of my last projection for obvious reasons and replaced by Demariyus Thomas. I think Maurice Harris goes to IR and Berrios gets on the team over Gunner. I still think Dorsett is a trade candidate, but if he is not traded he would get the last spot over Berrios.

OL(8)--Wynn, Thuney, Andrews, Mason, Cannon, Froholdt, Skipper, Karras
--Flipping back to Skipper this week.

DE(4)--Bennett, Winovich, Wise, Simon
--I'm worried about Calhoun's availability. Had to trim him because of the King injury that forced moves in other areas.

DT(4)--Guy, Shelton, Butler, Cowart
--Same four from me this time around as well. Pennel got some action with the 1's but not enough to swing me in the direction of keeping him. Cowart starting indicates to me he's on the team as well.

LB(5)--Hightower, Collins, Van Noy, Bentley, Roberts
--Roberts gets on the team due to the fallout from King's injury.

CB(6)--Gilmore, JMac, Williams, Jackson, JJones, Crossen
--Same group as last week.

SAF(5)--DMac, Chung, Harmon, Brooks, Ebner
--Ebner gets on the team due to King's injury which forced me to keep Roberts at LB and trim from the DE's.

ST(3)--Bailey, Gostkowski, Cardona
--This area is set.

Reserve PUP--Meredith
IR: Rivers, M. Harris, King, Calhoun
NFI--Cajuste
Suspended--Watson
Traded: Dorsett to the Lions for a late round pick
Tough Cuts: Pennel, Kendricks, Beck, Ferentz, Melifonwu,. Gunner

I like your list a lot with the following exceptions, none of which I would go to my grave over:
  • I don't think Hoyer makes it. At least not at the first wave of cuts. (Net minus 1)
  • I don't think Berrios makes it. Gunner has shown enough IMO to make these two equal in my mind. That said, I think both get cut and one or both get signed to PS. (Net minus 1)
  • I think Dorsett makes it. At least until Gordon or Thomas or Edelman show that they are good to go long-term. (Net plus 1)
  • I think Froho might be a surprise cut/PS guy. Despite being a relatively high pick, I don't think he's shown enough that other teams will be drooling over grabbing him, thus he gets re-signed to PS. Then either Croston or Ferentz get added to that slot. (Roster wash)
  • These tweaks yield one slot that I think goes to Dawson, mainly because he can play slot CB, while also contributing on ST. If not Dawson, then I think it goes to Calhoun.

Dorsett is making the team. (IMO, obviously) He's solid and Brady loves him and he's been a really good soldier for them. Berrios is gone, I think.

The Pennel situation is just strange. He's a terrific player and is something the Pats need, but something isn't right there. I have loved how Cowart has performed and that would end up being a really nice draft surprise.

I'm hoping Melifonwu makes it but I think Brooks has been better.

A WR group of a fully healthy Edelman, Gordon, Thomas, Dorsett, Harry, and Meyers....have the Pats ever had as good an overall group? I know the 2007 team with a fully roaring Moss and Welker (with Stallworth too) was amazing, but I don't know that they were as deep as this group.

Probably depends on how you view Harry/Meyers and whether or not Demaryius is cooked (I think he is). Talentwise, I think this 2019 group matches up as well as any WR group we’ve had. But it’s obviously going to be pretty volatile with 2 rooks, Gordon, and Demaryius.

I think we have a general sense of what Edelman and Dorsett will provide.

The 2017 group looked pretty good at the time. Edelman, Hogan, Amendola, Mitchell coming back at some point, plus gronk returning from injury. These things have a way of getting thin pretty quickly...Edelman missed the whole year, Mitchell never came back, Hogan missed large chunks of the season. The current group has a reasonably high ceiling but a very low floor.

My guess for now

QB (2) Brady, Stidham
RB (6) Michel, White, Harris, Burkhead, Bolden, Develin
WR (6) Edelman, Harry, Dorsett, Gordon, Meyers, Slater
TE (2) Izzo, LaCosse
C (1) Andrews

DE (5) Bennett, Winovich, Simon, Wise, Calhoun

SS (2) Chung, Ebner
FS (3) D.McCourty, Harmon, Brooks
ST (3) Gostkowski, Bailey, Cardona

I'm guessing the Calhoun injury is significant, but not season ending. So I have him making the 53 man roster, then being put on IR and re-signing Hoyer since he doesn't have to go through waivers.

My last spot is between Crossen and Calvin Munson. Went with Crossen since I think its more likely Munson gets through waivers and to the practice squad.

Reiss provides some missing background on Kendrick's suspension:

The suspension is a result of a 2017 incident in Wisconsin, when Kendricks was cited for marijuana possession as part of a traffic stop. In July 2019, Kendricks was sentenced to six months' probation, and if he performed eight hours of community service, the charges would be dismissed.
...
Kendricks is eligible to participate in all remaining preseason practices and the team's final preseason game Thursday against the New York Giants. He will be eligible to return to the Patriots' active roster on Sept. 9, after the team's Week 1 game versus Pittsburgh.
As Zedia mentioned above, the extra week via the suspension could be useful.

In the limited preseason action so far, I thought Kendricks was the one who looked most like a legit NFL TE.

How should we think about Indy as a possibility for Hoyer? Seems a reasonable fit for a low runs pick...but also a train he might not wait around on the shadow roster if cut too.

The season tickets have already been sold. If you're the Colts, give Brissett the reins as starting QB. You find out if he can be the QB going forward, or you then know you need to draft a QB next year. If Hoyer is cut, maybe the Colts bring him in as the backup. I can't see them trading for him, though.

Wrt to IR, do those players have to make the initial 53-man roster, thus exposing others to waivers?

Im finally on board the 2 QB train. I feel like Stidham has shown 90% of what Hoyer has and will learn the rest as he moves through his rookie year. My last call was Burkhead, Ferentz, or Croston. I personally no longer feel that the Burkhead injury propensity is worth his production, so I am going with the 5 RB, but could very easily see Burkhead for the extra tackle. I always list Slater as a ST because he is not a true WR. Has 1 career receprion at WR. and doesnt even attend WR meetings. Including him as a WR misconstrues depth. We have 6 WR.

Really wanted Barrios to make this team, but cant see it now. With Meyers, Thomas, and Harry, he is desperately going to want another guy he has a trust factor with.

The same Panthers that took Will Grier in the 3rd round? They would like to pay that price to have a guy that went a round later in the same draft? Because he spent camp with the Patriots?

Also, people close to the Pats like Perillo are saying Croston is ahead of Skipper, when the opposite was starting to become assumed.

Hoping it’ll open up a spot not for the putrid Ferentz we’ve seen throughout pre season, but for any number of veteran interior linemen to come in after everyone cuts down to 53. #youcanalwaysfindaguard?

Too late for that. NFI, like PUP, is for those who start training camp injured. He’ll just go on regular IR.
I think the trickiest question here is whether the Patriots think he may be able to return later this season or not and thus whether they need to have him on the 53 man roster before designating him to IR.

With the Andrews news, Karras is now the starter at center which would seemingly open a spot for James Ferentz.
Anyone watching rookie center Gauthier closely? Undrafted kid who started 25 games at center for Miami. Bedard says that he stunk in one on one drills; the PFW crowd has said he looks good.

He feels like a great PS candidate for depth behind Karras and Ferentz.

Anything to suggest he could compete with Ferentz for a spot? It doesn't sound like he's taken snaps with Brady or anything but I'm pretty sure that Ferentz isn't the answer so I'm hoping for more from Gauthier.

I think I read that that process is no longer needed. However it may be moot as everything I’ve read, here and elsewhere, says that he won’t be playing again this year.

Unless there is a new rule change in 2019, the 2018 rule was that a player had to be on the 53-man roster. One of the changes they did make last year is that the player no longer needs to be designated as the "to return" player when they get put on IR plus the addition of a 2nd IR return spot.

This was the best explanation I could find: https://www.cincyjungle.com/2018/8/31/17797904/explaining-pup-nfi-ir-other-injury-nfl-roster-designations-cuts-53-man-roster

I think he's still too raw to take him over the more experienced options.

ESPN / Mike Reiss has his 53-man projection out. Go read his arguments, but here's the lineup, I'll bold anything semi-unusual:

QB (3) T.Brady, B.Hoyer, J.Stidham
RB (5) S.Michel, J.White, R.Burkhead, D.Harris, B.Bolden
FB (1) J.Develin
WR (6) J.Edelman, N.Harry, J.Gordon, P.Dorsett, J.Meyers, D.Thomas
TE (2) M.LaCosse, R.Izzo
C (2) T.Karras, J.Ferentz
G (3) S.Mason, J.Thuney, H.Froholdt
T (2) M.Cannon, I.Wynn
DE (3) M.Bennett, D.Wise, B.Cowart
DT (3) L.Guy, A.Butler, D.Shelton
ILB (1) J.Bentley
OLB(6) D.Hightower, K.VanNoy, C.Munson, J.Collins, C.Winovich, J.Simon
CB (7)
S.Gilmore, J.McCourty, J.Williams, J.Jones, J.Jackson, D.Dawson, K.Crossen
SS (1) P.Chung
FS (3) D.McCourty, D.Harmon, T.Brooks
ST (5) S.Gostkowski, J.Bailey, J.Cardona, M.Slater, N.Ebner

Hardest cuts: G.Olszewski, D.Skipper, C.Croston, K.Webster, O.Melifonwu (injured)
Projects trade for ILB Elandon Roberts, and strongly suggests it from the CB position where we're arguable overstacked.
B. Watson's return for week 5 probably means a cut somewhere.

Reiss has Winovich as a LB rather than DE (his listed position), which at 250lbs and a lot of lateral play makes sense to me. Reiss lists Simon as a LB and Ebner as a ST as well.

This was worded a little clunkily. I think Reiss is suggesting that the Pats would trade Roberts and separately suggests that they could also trade from the CB position. While they could potentially combine Roberts and a CB in a 2 for 1 trade I don't think that was being implied.

If you keep Hoyer over a third tackle, I guess? Reiss must be projecting faith that someone like Thuney could pinch hit at T. That’s really light on OL, and I can’t recall what the last time the Pats didn’t carry a swing tackle. He basically allocated space for two backups across the OL, neither of which we have any reason to believe could play tackle.

Yeah, this only makes sense if they think Skipper, or Croston, etc will go unclaimed and revert to the practice squad or they get someone better on cutdown day. The NFL OT landscape is pretty barren. I would be terrified not to keep a swing tackle.

Yep. No way they keep 7 OL with 12 DB and 3 QB.

That's a razor thin margin of error, and rebuilding the OL on the fly during the season is bad news.

I charted some of the preseason games, and Winovich and Simon (along with Calhoun and Rivers in the games they were healthy) played almost exclusively in two point stances standing up on the edge. It looks like they're moving to more of a 3-4 type scheme this year, and the team is classifying these edge players as OLBs rather than DEs (note that they are working with DeMarcus Covington, the OLB coach, rather than Bielema the DL coach). You will also note that Reiss lists Wise as a DE, which is also consistent with how he's been used in the preseason (largely as a 3-4 end in base personnel).

Croston was a street free agent from 7/30 - 8/12, apparently with no interest, so it seems likely they can sneak him through waivers if they need to add another guy in the interim. Thuney's ability to kick out in a pinch also helps, though I imagine there will be a swing tackle on the roster come Week 1.

Remember this: the roster that the Pats end up with after cut day is likely not going to be the same one as when they begin practice on Wednesday.
This is a great point. I have a hard time putting a guy like Munson or Gunner on the final cutdown roster, as they seem almost certain to sneak through waivers if they need the spot to say, put Rivers on IR-DTR.

Yup. It's also really easy to imagine them picking up some TEs and OL just to see if they can get something better than Skipper/Izzo/Ferentz and quickly re-signing Skipper and Izzo if they don't like how the first couple of practices guy.

A couple of potential options:
1) Dwayne Allen could be gone in Miami after signing a deal that guaranteed him $1.25 MM this offseason. They would almost certainly trade him, but Pats would have to take his $3.25 MM cap number, with $1.25 MM guaranteed salary. But if he's cut, maybe they'd trust him more than Izzo?
2) Brandon Thorn threw out Nick Easton as a possibility after Andrews' condition came out. Easton signed a 4-year, $22.5 MM contract with the Saints this offseason, but New Orleans drafted Erik McCoy and Easton has been on kind of shaky ground this preseason. A deal works financially for both sides; the Saints would eat his $2 MM bonus but save his $2 MM guaranteed salary this year, while the Pats would take on his $2 MM in 2019 salary but have no guaranteed money after. Easton has started 17 NFL games at G and C so he'd give them some experience behind Karras.

Roster / workout bonuses count against the acquiring team's cap, but signing bonuses don't? Would think that Allen would only count $1.9M base salary against the Pats cap.

It depends on when they're paid out. I'd imagine the $100 K workout bonus has already been paid, but roster bonuses are usually week-to-week, so the Pats would be on the hook for those.
