Inside Lou Gorman's Head
We have the roster projections thread and the expectations thread, but given today is cutdown day, we need a place to discuss the actual moves BB makes to get down to 53.

That place is here.

Have at it.

Would people here be stunned if Slater is cut? Obviously he's a captain and one of the true leaders on the team. He's also a special teams only guy who is now 37 years old, and he makes $2.5 million. According to Spotrac, his dead cap hit would only be $152,500, so they could save a decent amount of money by cutting him. And they have some really really good special teams guys in camp right now, who are much younger than Slater.

I love the guy - one of my all time favorite Patriots - and I've heard NO rumors of this at all. I'm just wondering if people would be shocked to see a guy like Slater cut.

I think some offensive veterans will get cut or traded.

Pick 2 from this list:
Agholor
Bourne
Jacoby Meyers
Jonnu Smith
David Andrews

I don't see this, if only because, if this was a possibility, they would've set up a retirement ceremony that would've made the James White stuff look small.

Yeah, Bill will heap Tedy Bruschi levels of retirement praise on Slater when he calls it a career.

No chance Andrews is cut. He's the absolute anchor for that line, and the line is struggling enough right now as it is. I could see one of the other guys from that list going though.

And I'm not talking about Slater retiring (which is what White did). I'm talking about him being cut. Totally different.

I don't see even 1 from that list going anywhere.

Thornton hurt, so I think they keep the WRs, Smith had some good days in camp this year, and Andrews...man, there's no way.

The young center, Russey, has had rave reviews, and apparently can't switch to Guard.

Slater is tied to the community closer than any other Patriot, maybe ever. Not to mention that he's a fan favorite and a Belichick favorite. Even Cam Newton got released before cutdown day. There's zero chance that Belichick would just cut Slater.

But the fun part is we'll see in the next 6 hours!

I also should have added Trent Brown, Michael Onwenu, and Damien Harris to the list.

Smith - this will leave tight end very sgallow, but he hasn't begun to produce what his salary dictates
Bourne - quite possible. He seems to have gotten on BB's dark side. But see below.
Agholor - They're too thin at receiver, with Wilkerson and Thornton hors de combat
Andrews - they really have no one besides Andrews to play center. Also, one would think they'd be rehearsing a replacement to get in synch with Mac.
Meyers - Duck - Mac has begun throwing tablets. If you want to see him really get pissed, cut his binky.

Slater is a distinct possibility, given his salary and the plethora of other special teamers around. And why three qbacks? As someone else remarked, Mac is the developmental project. If you're not going to plug and play Hoyer, why pay him that just to hang around?

No real insights, just skylarking. Crude logic gets one nowhere with BB.

I'm expecting pretty minimal fireworks. Andrews and Slater would be bigger than Milloy level shocks, let alone after the way the team backslid at the end of the season last year and the current coaching turnover. Those are, conservatively speaking, two top 5 "Patriot way" guys on the roster right now.

Rooting for Wade and any of the bubble WRs. Ultimately I'm as interested in what happens during waivers as I am with this afternoon.

I thought about Russey, but I don't know how much game exposure he's received. Besides, with the OL already in tumult, you're going to play 2 rookies (Russey and Strange) in the middle of the line? That's inconceivable, which means it may very well happen.

Has Russey been playing with the top line at all? I am instinctively discounting any rave reviews for any lineman given their collective performance this preseason.

I'd love to make him ST coach the minute he retires.

Why are people even debating Slater or Andrews? There is zero chance they are cut. There are no surprise cuts expected today per beat writers (though wouldn't much of a surprise would it...) and trades seem to be the only wildcard.

There are very predictable roster planning things fans discuss which largely include (1) cutting any coverage special teams player not making the minimum (2) cut interior offensive linemen not making the minimum and three cutting any other non pro bowler or near pro bowler who makes more than about a million bucks.

Fans can't see the difference on the field or off the field for a slater or an andrews but clearly BB can.

This would, of course, be shocking even if the numbers above were correct.

Slaters deal is fully guaranteed this year, and since he signed a Veteran Salary Benefit deal, his cap hit is only 1.27M. If you cut him, it doubles to 2.62M.

Also as a general rule, don't go looking for reasons to cut Matthew Slater.

I feel like we spend too much time caring about the churn at the bottom of the roster. The Pats seem to know right away when a UDFA or low draft pick is any good. How many guys in the last few years have they released that we would want back? Berrios? They have messed around by releasing Folk and Hoyer.

There's seemingly no chance they move Andrews, but there is a QB very accustomed to playing behind him who lost his starting center during preseason.

Before reading this, he seemed like a candidate to be cut and then immediately brought back via the practice squad. But if I am reading you correctly the Pats would take a financial hit if they did that.

They would, correct.

Mike Reiss had a good list this morning on twitter of guys he identified as possibilities to be cut and return after guy(s) are put on IR.

He had Carl Davis, Henry Anderson, Reakwon McMillan, Terrance Mitchell and Joe Cardona.

McMillan would be a surprise--patriots.com just put out an article touting him and Wilson

New England Patriots on Twitter: "Fresh linebackers bring speed and energy to Patriots defense. @Kwon_daTRUTH & @MackWilSr aim to make an impact in New England: https://t.co/vLkPTdmrEM" / Twitter

"They're definitely going to be a big part of the defense. Excited to have both those guys, and they've made some plays for us in the preseason. I'm excited, and I know they are, too," (Steve) Belichick told Patriots.com during Monday's media availability.

Still can't believe that team rebounded from that, plus the shellacking at the hands of the Bills in week one to go on to win another Super Bowl.

Coming off a 9-7 season, I wonder how things had turned out with the team if they did not rebound from Milloy getting cut and had a bad year, just shows how focused that group of players was.

He wasn't talking about him not being on the team.

Talking about him being a guy they cut today, with the understanding he's re-signed after they put guys on IR.
I understand that. But I still don't think that happens to players they think will be a big part of the team--especially since once you cut them they can theoretically leave no matter the "understanding".

Here's a running tracker of all cuts around the league: https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/transactions/grid

I think some offensive veterans will get cut or traded.

Pick 2 from this list:
Agholor
Bourne
Jacoby Meyers
Jonnu Smith
David Andrews
Hardly a salary cap expert -- and frankly some of the contract clauses are so complicated I wouldn't even try to guess about implications of cuts, so people should feel free to correct me -- but if I understand dead cap implications, some of these guys are almost certainly not going to released because it would lead to huge amounts of dead money: Jonnu Smith ($26M), Agholor ($10M), Andrews ($5.9M). You can predict the most likely cuts most years by looking at the dead cap amounts here: https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/new-england-patriots/cap/

In addition to Reiss's predictions, I'd expect Cajuste and Cody Davis to be released. Some players as mentioned may be released and brought back on cheaper deals (Cardona, etc.).
