Have to think Vince is gone now.  If Branch gets $6.6 million after being picked up off the scrap heap, then Vince should easily be able to get double that.

Absolutely no chance Vince gets $13.2M, there were rumors of 2 and $10M for Vince but that seems really high.

Seems like a lot for Branch.

Godspeed Vince. Hope you end up in the NFC. Probably should be giving some thought to extending Siliga now.

Here
There could be probowl incentive bonuses in there for all we know. We need to see the details. Still, he's a good player.

Pure speculation, but wouldn't be surprised if its snap count incentives like Wilforks deal. Seems a good way to balance interests for the player/role Branch may have

The "6.6 max" comes from the agent. I'd be surprised if guarantees were more than about $2M. Vince is going to want more, and probably get more...but how much more? And if it's not too much more, could they both be back in '15?

This has to be a 1yr contract in reality right?  Something like 1-2M signing bonus with min salary this year and team option bonus for next year?
Can't see Branch having more than a 2M cap hit for this year when Knighton only gets 1yr 4M.

Of course. He won't have enough guaranteed money to make him a lock to see the second year. Surely the only way he'll see year two of a deal is if it makes him underpaid. Any multiyear deal in the NFL the last year(s) are basically team options. Whatever NFL contracts are announced as are worthless until you see the guarantees.

Look at the Amendola extension this week. It's announced as a 3yr year deal worth 12.75M and can be worth up to 15M.

When it could just as easily be announced as a one year deal worth 1.75M with only 500K guaranteed with two team option years.

As everyone suspected.

Another option year contract that will factor in to compensation picks in 2017 if Branch's second year is not renewed and he signs elsewhere. Do you think the league will look at changing these contracts for compensation calculations given their increased usage?

I don't think it's circumventing the spirit of the rule, because it's actually compensating teams for guys who are lost to free agency. But, by not picking up the option, the Patriots would be effectively saying the player is not worth the salary/bonus/cap hit, which is similar to a cut for skill reasons. Players who are prematurely cut are not compensation-eligible.

Thoughts?

I'm sure they will eventually, but there's no reason not to use the loophole while it exists. If there was a obscure rule that said cap hits counted 2% less for contracts signed on Tuesdays using a purple pen, you know the Pats would sign all their players on Tuesdays and give them purple pens.
