Thank God.

Both of his replacements were hot garbage, that one holding penalty alone wiped out a huge gain.

Dont know what happened to Herron. Even in preseason he looked like he went significantly backwards from last year.

Yodny Cajuste was inactive yesterday, but he was also questionable on the injury report. Whenever he gets healthy, I wouldn't be surprised if he takes Herron's spot on the active game day roster as the primary backup swing tackle.

I didn't like Herron much last year and didn't think he looked any better in the preseason. The fact that they traded for Yasir Durant in the first place tells me the Pats may not feel like Herron is the solution there either. Durant had been playing at guard with KC, but he played LT and RT in college at Missouri, and was considered a potential swing tackle going into last year's draft. Thought it was interesting that the Pats went to him at RT when Herron wasn't cutting it, as opposed to moving Onwenu to RT and putting in Karras at guard.

Not sure what they'll do next Sunday if Brown can't play. It's possible that, with a full week of practice ahead, they move Onwenu out there, as opposed to simply plugging in someone else at RT and calling it a day. It's unclear if they'd rather not move Onwenu around like that (probably to maintain as much continuity as possible), or if they simply thought that was the best move to make while in the middle of a game. Could be a different story with a full week to prepare.

Ah, my least favorite and most viewed (I think) annual thread.

I really hate the diagnosis of "calf strain" as the seriousness can vary widely. A calf strain for someone who is 6'8/300+ lbs sounds like something that can linger. A grade I calf strain is usually a 7-10 day recovery. If I can find any odds on Brown not playing next week I'll take that bet. Perhaps they were playing it safe with a very important piece of their OL, but I don't think we'll see him for a few weeks.

That plus sign is doing a lot of work above.

Bedard just said on the radio that its the same calf injury that kept him off the field a ton for the Raiders the past two years, and essentially caused the team to move on from him.

Bedard may ultimately be correct, but I would not rely on him for detailed medical insider info. It's probably the same leg, but doubtful anyone outside a select few know whether it's the same exact injury.

That sounds ominous. It may be the same calf but no word on the same injury. He also doesn't have the same contract. 1 yr deal, 9M + 2M in roster bonuses or $117K per game. Will be interesting to watch this play out. This year is his ticket to another serious contract.

I agree. I don't necessarily think we will need him next week anyway. However, he was standing on the sidelines afterwards (not sure if it was for the remainder of the game though), so if it was real bad I doubt he'd be standing on it. That being said, Herron did not impress IMO, so hopefully it's a short recovery.

You are being awful kind to Herron here.

Brown is officially a concern for me at this point, especially given that Cajuste is also injured. They need very good O line play this year to be good on offense; without one of those two guys, it might be a liability

Relax on Brown for now. If he doesn't practice tomorrow, then we'll know he's out. Have to manage a guy like that so 1 or 2 games missed doesn't turn into 6-7.

That's fair, but this week is a bit of a must-win if the Pats are going to be a playoff team. Hard to come back from 0-2 in the division. Feels like it's going to be a battle.

With a week of practice they can cover for Brown against the Jets. I'm more worried about the terrible run defense right now.

The worry here for the Pats is that Brown has just become the guy he was in Vegas and his body can't hold up anymore. I was betting on the Pats fixing him, but this narrative sounds awfully familiar after the last two seasons.

Well, if 7-10 days is the typical for a calf strain, it would make sense for him to be out this week and limited/questionable next week. If Trent Brown is the sole difference for this team making the playoffs, they are not the team we thought they were.

I wouldn't say the Pats run defense was terrible. It wasn't good situationally (which is a concern), but there were also some things that seemed they could be cleaned up as well, and the D also forced multiple 3-and-outs. They should beat the overrated Jets.

I I wouldn't say he's the sole difference, but as with most teams, you're often as good as your depth. The expectation prior to free agency is that the Pats OL would be pretty well decimated. We'd be losing Thuney and Andrews to free agency, and needed to load up elsewhere (TE and WR) on guys like Jonnu and Juju. Instead, while Thuney did move on, they managed to keep Andrews and trade for Brown. We were so spoiled by Road Grader Brown in 2018 that we discounted his injuries with the Raiders - I certainly did. Past draft capital had been invested wisely though, with Cajuste expected to swing tackle, and Herron if absolutely necessary.

Well, absolutely became necessary. A run and play-action team like the Pats needs a line that can push when necessary, and hold (not literally, Herron!) as play action develops. Without Brown or Cajuste, they're surely in trouble. Dante's not walking through that door either. Sad to say I had to look up his replacement, and most of what I found was talk of OL coach Cole Popovich leaving the team during camp (and FWIW, he's still listed at patriots.com - https://www.patriots.com/team/coaches-roster/cole-popovich ), so I'm honestly not sure who's coachin' em up. Anyone have a definitive source?

Brown and Cajuste may indeed be out; for a single game. If Cajuste is limited this week, it's safe to bet he will return in Week 3 against the Saints. And OL coaching is probably the least of my concerns; it's still Belichick's staff. I think it's OK to be concerned about Brown given that he battled the same injury last year, but it's too early to tell if his will be a season-long issue or not.

We want Brown to be healthy when it matters. Hes super valuable. Even with Brown and Cajuste out, I think the team is ok sliding Karras somewhere inside and having Onwenu/Wynn bookend the line.

Ideal? No. Ideal would be having your starters not get hurt. But it's a good enough group to not get Mac killed and still be a solid unit while getting a win against a shitty Jets team.

Not to mention the depth at TE, which we can leverage for extra blocking to keep in if needed.

I hope Brown is out this week. We dont need him for the Jets.

A lot has been written about how bad Herron was in the first half, but the little I've seen about Durant (Bedard listed him this morning as zero pressures allowed in 13 snaps) suggests he might be a pretty good stand-in. That said, Bedard does go on to say "I have no clue how good Durant is."

The other option, assuming Cajuste isn't ready to go, is to shift Onwenu over to RT and plug Karras in at LG. More moving pieces, but a lot of familiarity at those "new" positions.

Really? I think "key OL injury and underperforming backup at tackle" is exactly the kind of thing that could be the difference for this team to miss the playoffs. They aren't that loaded that they should be expected to coast into the postseason with a rookie QB.

Popovich and Carmen Bricillo were co-OL coaches last year in the wake of Dante's retirement. With Popovich out, it's just Briccillo. He's only been in the NFL three years but coached OL at the college level (Youngstown State).

If it becomes a problem for most of the season, I do agree. I do think the Pats should be able to overcome the issue against the Jets, however. I'm also not willing to read too much into a backup's performance in Week 1.

Sure, obviously if it's a short term issue that only affects their game against arguably the easiest opponent on the schedule it shouldn't have an impact. But when you said "if Trent Brown is the sole difference for this team making the playoffs, they are not the team we thought they were" I thought you were talking about losing him for an extended period of time.

Excellent, thanks for the the citation. The Patriots website also mentions Billy Yates as assistant OL coach in his first year, coming over after time with the Lions, presumably with Patricia's stamp of approval. Yates has a fascinating Patriot story - practice squad for the entire 2004 season, until being activated for SB XXXIX. I can't tell if he actually played in the game, but pretty cool.

Wait, what even is a throat injury? I mean, the first thought is that he could have some sort of non-covid respiratory illness, but that would just be listed as an illness, right?

Probably a hit to the throat caused some bruising, perhaps to the larynx. Maybe it affects his breathing.

Non-injury related. (I assume because they don't want to keep all the RBs active, and Taylor is getting his shot since Stevenson shat himself pretty thoroughly in game 1).
Yeah they're going to rotate guys, and this was ideal circumstances to select Rham as the guy getting a day off.

I wonder what's up with Phillips, was out yesterday and questionable today, both times listed as not injury related.
