I think undrafted rookie free agents are a different story, though.  They mostly just want to be on a team, any team, and get 16 paychecks if possible.  A veteran, on the other hand, might, depending on his health, how much money he's banked, stage of career, etc., choose to wait around because they like that team's coaches, team-culture, chance at a ring, etc.

Good point.  Makes the decision to "shadow roster" Sudfeld entail more risk.  Although (crossing fingers) now that Gronk is healthy the Pats seem to be rolling more two tight end formations, so presumably Belichick is fairly happy with the current TE depth chart.

Didn't work out with Sudfeld so well.  His locker was also reported as intact until claimed by the Jets.

Collie, I believe,  becomes an Unrestricted Free Agent, as he has 4 years of "service time".  Sudfeld was subject to the waiver wire.

edited to change to the more pertinent quotes.

After the trade deadline all players are subject to waivers. But no one is claiming an injured WR who couldn't get a job a month before anyway.

Yep, I sort of glazed over the whole "up until the trading deadline" part of the rules.  Carry on...

Was expecting this if he was healthy, glad to see this happen.  Matt Slater got reps at WR last week, they definitely need another body.

I'm assuming it doesn't look good for Thompkins this week?
He practiced yesterday, limited though. Dobson still out.

They cut D.J. Williams yesterday to open this slot. That might mean Illinois Mike is close to returning (he was back at practice yesterday).

THE FINAL PIECE OF THE PUZZLE

I am so looking forward to rubbing this post in your face after he catches a screen pass in quadruple-overtime in the super bowl and taking it 87 TDs for the game winning touchdown against the Dallas Cowboys.

Without him, they may very well be 8-4 and behind Cincy (and Indy too, right?) in playoff seeding.  Collie made a couple of big catches in The Drive in the New Orleans game.

If that happens, I have every expectation that OFT will lick the remains of the post off his post and say, "More, please."

Except by quadruple overtime, he'd probably be so drunk it would be more like, "moooooooooaaaaar puuuhleeeeeez." Although the adrenaline might take it in the other direction altogether... "GIVE IT TO ME!!"

I got $10 bucks that says a guy runs by him and the breeze off that player gives him a concussion. The guy cannot stay healthy.

Totally agree; I was just being cheeky.  I'm all for him being on the Patriots, when healthy.  He seemed to be more Welker-like in the tiny sample in which we've seen him than either Edelman or Amendola (not saying he can be as productive as Edelman, rather that he seems well suited to the "get open over the middle and move the chains" role at which Welker was so good.)

Well they could cut somebody.
Collie is already at practice, which I think means the roster move has already happened; it just hasn't been officially reported. Teams aren't just allowed to have extra players at practice. Since the only four guys missing are Mankins, Boyce, Dobson, and Dennard, the move almost certainly concerns one of them.
