I fully expect that on 9/10 the Pats will be home playing probably the Steelers. But there is one small wrinkle that could send them on the road for week 1. On 9/12 there is a scheduled concert for One Directional. Apparently they have a lot of setting up to do for their show.

In 2012 the NFL moved opening night to Wed so as not to conflict with Obama's acceptance speech at the Convention. But something tells me One Direction will figure out how to set up their stuff in the 40 or so hours between end of Thursday night game and start of Sat night concert.

The AFC West and AFC North have brutal schedules.  They're going head-to-head and they're facing the best divisions in the NFC (North and West).  Look at the Steelers' schedule: In addition to their divisional games, their other road games are KC, SD, NE, SEA, STL.  And they have some tough home dates as well - DEN, IND, SF.  That's just ridiculous.  I just can't see a team from either of those divisions finishing with more than 11 wins at most and even that might be a stretch.

The Colts' schedule looks ridiculously easy (where have I heard that before) as they have their own sad sack division plus the NFC South.

There is a long way to go but I'd make the Patriots and Colts pretty strong favorites for first round byes, which would be a dream scenario.

At Indy should be fun -- "Today, I settled all family business, so don't tell me you're innocent, Carlo."

Honestly, I just hope the Pats lay waste to the effing League. Start with cementing that secondary.

Patriots.com has a schedule predictor tool.  Here's what I came up with and I'll add in when I think they'll get primetime games.  I used the maximum 5 primetime appearances.  I think the Indy game will be protected by CBS.

Week 1 vs. Philly--Thursday Night Opener
Week 2 at Buffalo
Week 3 vs. Jacksonville
Week 4 vs. Miami
Week 5 at NY Giants
Week 6 at Houston
Week 7 vs NY Jets--Sunday Night Football
Week 8 BYE
Week 9 at Denver--Sunday Night Football
Week 10 vs. Pittsburgh
Week 11 at Indianapolis
Week 12 at Dallas--Thanksgiving Day
Week 13 vs. Washington
Week 14 vs. Buffalo--Monday Night Football
Week 15 vs. Tennessee
Week 16 at NY Jets
Week 17 at Miami

The week 9-12 stretch looks like it could be a series of tough games, capped with the short week before playing in Dallas.  At least they should be rested going into it.

Buffalo is a small market, but I guess if they get an MNF game it makes sense to have it with either NE or NYJ given the Rex storyline.

It would be nice to have week 16 be NYJ elimination day.

Why so late?

My guess is that we'll see Pittsburgh in the opener. As Volin, I believe, pointed out, that the Steelers are an AFC opponent and have a marquee QB makes them an attractive match-up. Though the Jets/Revis and Buffalo/Sexy Rexy story lines are pretty good too.

I also think the Pats will likely travel to Miami early and host them late, as that pattern seems to have applied in most years. The Pats get a hot weather game and Miami has to deal with the cold. I know there have been many years when that did not apply, however.

Here's to the Pats playing on TG. Love that.

Thanks for the heads up, RO, and good guesses.

Here's a tip for anyone playing: NYJ vs. MIA is Week 4 in London, and both teams will have Week 5 off, so don't guess either of those teams in those weeks.

Here are mine:

Week 1 vs. Pittsburgh--Thursday Night Opener
Week 2 at NYJ
Week 3 vs Buffalo
Week 4 at Houston
Week 5 vs. Washington
Week 6 at Indy -- Sunday Night Football
Week 7 vs Miami
Week 8 BYE
Week 9 at Denver -- Sunday Night Football
Week 10 vs. Philly
Week 11 at NYG
Week 12 vs Jacksonville
Week 13 at Dallas--Thanksgiving Day
Week 14 vs. Tennessee
Week 15 vs. NY Jets
Week 16 at Miami
Week 17 at Buffalo

Edit: new entry to account for Pats on the road Weeks 16 & 17. Also note that Bills/Jags is London Week 7.

Denver, only physically
Let me share an orthodox Jewish outlook on the potential schedule, with an eastern time zone vantage point.  Rosh Hashanah starts on Sunday night, September 13, so we would not want to have the late game on Sunday afternoon, Sunday night football, or Monday night football (two day YomTov).  Sukkos starts on Sunday night, September 27, so we would not want to have the late game on Sunday afternoon, Sunday night football, or Monday night football once again.  Shemini Atzeres/Simchas Torah starts on Sunday night, October 4, so again we would not want to have the late game on Sunday afternoon, Sunday night football, or Monday night football.

The Patriots fortunately begin NFL Week #1 on Thursday, September 10, so that's one game that won't be needing the DVR treatment.  That leaves us concerned only with Weeks #3 and #4.  Accordingly, I like Average Reds' calendar-speculation, as our Weeks 3-4 games would be with Eastern Time Zone opponents (Jacksonville and Miami), and that probably would enhance the chances for having those two Sunday games landing in the early slot on Sunday.

One can hope (pray?)...  I envy dear co-religionists who can keep themselves in the dark as to outcomes and watch games on DVR as if the games were live.  If I recall correctly, I began watching the DVR of our playoff game with the Ravens, then went to the live broadcast posthaste when we were down by two touchdowns per the DVR the first time on that Saturday night.  By that point, the Patriots had tied the game for the first time.  Odds favor that in my old age I've messed up something here, so thanks in advance for any corrections.

Just before hitting Submit, I've seen Dynomite's post - so Miami is out of the picture for the fourth week, and Houston is the suggestive alternative.  Now that's one game I'd really like to see in real time (without needing to duck out for services somewhere in the second half), given the chances of our squaring off against either of the two Pats'-alumni quarterbacks.

There's no way the Pats will be on the road on Sunday then back on the road 4 days later.

Even Goodell in a stupendous fit of pique would not do that.

The title of this thread is bad, bad, bad karma.
It's also so not true.  The AFC East schedule is the AFC schedule.  The Patriots are pretty good at home, I'd say. So it's the five other road games that to me most define the toughness of the schedule.
Those are at Dallas, Indianapolis, Giants, Denver and Houston.  That to me is a very very tough group.

I have to think the league views Philly as a sexier Opening Night opponent. So much buzz about 1. Chip Kelly and what the team is going to look like; 2. DeMarco Murray's Philly debut (as opposed to the black eye of Bell missing the game due to suspension); 3. Potentially Mariota's pro debut. From a ratings standpoint, I would think they would be considered more universally appealing than the Steelers.

My main case:

4- NFL Is pushing Super Bowl rematches heavily with gold letters, gold numbers on the field, gold hats etc. That's the only Super Bowl rematch for the Pats at home.

That's gotta be it. Maybe they'll invite McNabb to throw up the ceremonial first ball.

At this point I'd be pretty surpassed if it's not Pats-Eagles. The 50th anniversary of the Super Bowl is a big deal, and the idea of a season-long theme of previous match-ups is such a no-brainer even the "geniuses at the league office" (copyright, BB) can't screw it up. It's Kensil-proof!

The schedule is made for the convenience of owners and their franchises' needs, within the constraints of the CBA and TV deals.  I have no problem with owners reviewing it before it's confirmed.  There are only 256 games, it doesn't take a lot of mental bandwidth.  If only some owners get to preview it, and that pisses the other owners off, I'm sure they have some internal mechanism for handling it.  No reason anyone besides an owner should be pissed.

I wonder how much of it needs to be done to make sure that there are no conflict issues (e.g. concerts, local games, etc) or if that is all done in advance and this is just done to make sure there are no unfairnesses that show up that a computer might not notice.

I am guessing the conflicts have already been accounted for, e.g., the Winter Classic at Gillette.

Yeah, without a definition of what "beta testing" means in regards to this, I'm not sure I can get worked up either way.

Perhaps the PFT guy could have, you know, asked what it meant.

If they send the schedule to some owners and not the others, that's a problem.  Don't you think so?

How is that any different then some owners being on the competition committee or the labor committee or the TV right committee. I don't see how it's a big deal.

Try explaining that to your HC after he is presented with a schedule with several cross-country trips at bad times.

But I'm not losing sleep over it. You can bet your ass Kraft is a beta tester.
