Interesting... his recent comments suggested he really wanted to hit the open market again, but I thought the timing of his announcement right before spring training that he'd opt out suggested that he was trying to get a new deal before the season started.

Padres having more than $90 million committed to three players in 2033, kind of remarkable.

Machado at age 40 in the and X at age 41 on the same team. Lots of defensive range there in the NL.
Passan:
Manny Machado's path is wild. His market during free agency was grim until the Padres stepped in. He made $150M from that deal and will get another $350M. A genuine half-billion-dollar player. And the $350 million is a Trout- and Betts-sized number -- fourth-biggest deal ever.

Makes me wonder how serious they’ll be about a long-term Soto deal.
Soto might want to push for it now before the RSN mess sinks in and ownership realizes their revenue streams aren't as stable as they thought. Wonder if that was a factor for Machado?

Manny is actually a few months older than Bogaerts.

If they win it all sometime along the way it will all be worth it/avoid a fate like the Chargers suffered. If they don't, at least they tried.

I mean, I feel like you could argue this either way. The finite resources "there's got to be a limit somewhere" camp would suggest it would make it less likely, since they've committed so much money already. But since they're continuing to show us they don't fear huge long term contracts in any way, maybe it makes it more likely.

I dunno, maybe the Padres know something about the zombie apocalypse of 2029 the rest of us don't.

Boras is going to use the upcoming Ohtani deal as a starting point for Soto. I’m not ruling out the Padres completely, but the Bogaerts deal and Machado extension make it seem less likely now.

I think he fully planned to, but getting 170M for his age 36-40 seasons beyond the current Padres contract, that's insanely player-friendly.

If anyone put money on Soto eventually signing with NYY before this, their investment is looking really good right now.

Highly doubtful IMO. Two years is a long time, but NY has a bunch of stud OF prospects and Judge and Stanton long-term.

Since the Padres apparently don't care how much and for how long they pay anybody, why does anybody not think that Soto will be the next one to get a 10 year extension?

Because the amount that Boras is going to demand for a Soto extension may make even the Padres blanch.

Yeah, Soto/Boras turned down 15/440 last summer, that seemed crazy to me then and still seems pretty crazy.

Every off-season since Cole I think I could substitute this post in for your prediction (with “stud pitching” or whatever
And I’ve been right, they haven’t gone after any of those guys, mostly shortstops, and Peraza and Volpe should both be in the lineup by the end of this season.

There is no way NY will go after Soto or Ohtani IMO, feel free to pull this up if I'm wrong. Their plan going forward seems pretty clear, although of course things can always change quickly.

Well you said this about Cole… the Yankees had stacked pitching depth, etc….
Soto and Ohtani are too good…. Soto will still be young. Stanton hasn’t really been what Cashman hoped…. Judge will be 33 and his injury history suggests he’ll be at least a PT DH….
I’m 100% positive if San Diego doesn’t trade him (and that team works out a deal) or if San Diego doesn’t just extend him and Soto hits FA that he’ll be in Bronx.
Ohtani I don’t think it’s much less likely.

No, I absolutely didn't, I said they would be going after Cole as hard as they possibly could, and that's what happened. They don't really hide their intentions (or non-intentions) with top guys.

Really, there's virtually zero chance. I quit betting on sports cold turkey decades ago or I would bet you a lot of money on this, but we'll see.

FWIW I think the last major FA I was wrong about NY pursuing or not pursuing was Mark Teixeira, everyone was fooled on that including me.

Im sorry if I’m incorrect but I also don’t really know how to search for it… And I usually am incorrect about these things but I have memories of saying the Yankees would 100% not go after Cole.

Then a few posts later...

"No one from NY is talking about Cole, that is just media and fan wishful thinking. "
Yeah I think I'm confusing what I wanted NY to do (sign Cole) with what I thought Cashman would realistically do, but anyway there really is no chance they're going to pay $500M plus for Soto. They have Judge signed forever and they love Dominguez and Spencer Jones, I'm not even sure if they're going to pay up for Bader who is a perfect fit and loves being a Yankee, and that will cost 10-15 percent of what Soto will. Anyway this is all off topic, happy to go into it more in a Yankee thread if people want.

Padres looked at the Braves and decided to do the exact opposite. I like it as a baseball fan. Not sure I would love it as a Padres fan.

Why? If you’re a pads fan you should love this. They have strong revenues, it’s not your money, the penalty is in like 8 years. Fuck we could be living in a post apocalyptic mad max world by then

Or they figure they can get something similar from a team that's not the Nationals. When you're a guy of Soto's calibre and you have confidence in your ability to command some number of hundreds of millions, I imagine the allure of playing 10+ years for a contender/well run organization becomes a lot more appealing.

A lot of Red Sox fans still seem to be stuck in the 2000s when the Yankees were in "SIGN EVERYONE" mode. Without thinking too hard about it at all, I'd bet the Mets and Dodgers are likely to be the big players for Soto (and Ohtani, Burnes, etc.)

I think JA is right about Soto. The Judge deal really seems to take that option off the table for them.

Soto is an elite hitter anywhere, but it's interesting that he's really not the kind of LHB who'd appear to benefit from Yankee Stadium. His power is mostly to left and straightaway — at least the kind of hitter he is now.

If you're hoping for Boston to sign Soto in two years, I think the Machado deal has to be seen as a slightly favorable development. But who knows. Plenty of time to jaw about it later, but this Sox lineup would be pretty fun in 2025-26.

Yoshida - DH
Soto - LF
Story - 2B
Devers - 3B
Casas - 1B
Bleis - RF
Mayer - SS
Rafaela - CF
Wong/McGuire/Alfaro - C

Soto is exactly the type of hitter the Sox should go nuts for. His defense sucks but his bat should be elite to very good for at least another decade. He makes a ton of sense for this team, especially if Mayer, Bleis, etc. pan out.

Exactly.
We all liked Ortiz/Manny together right? Soto and Devers for a dozen years together shouldn't be so bad. And perhaps a trade for Alcantara to complete the triad.

I'm a Padres fan and I love it. Machado is damn good ballplayer and I'm psyched to have him locked in for the next decade. Machado/Bogey/Tatís is about as good a foundation as you could ask for. All the better if they can find a way to retain Soto.

I just haven’t really seen the MFY’s actually really show commitment to positional players. They tend to get hyped then traded (either after a year or two or prior to a ML promotion). And we’re talking about Soto here- he’ll be young. Jon Abbey’s “Stanton and Judge” defense isn’t convincing- Stanton hasn’t been what they had hoped, Judge will be 33 and likely battling injuries and performance decline. It’s not wild at all to see a fit. Sure, about 6 other teams would be in hard on him but if NY wants him, they’ll beat the others.
Ohtani I don’t see NY going after as hard.

Yeah, Padres fans should be fired up. This is a team that has never won anything who now has the most exciting lineup in MLB along with a strong rotation. Soto is probably going elsewhere in 2 years but the excitement of 2023-2024 could provide something this franchise has never seen. I love when teams who aren’t traditional powers go for the jugular. It doesn’t always work out but who really cares about 6-8 years from now if you’re a Padres fan? I can’t wait to watch that lineup when Tatis returns. The Dodgers are weaker with Turner gone. The Giants are seemingly a perpetual meh now. And the Diamondbacks are another team with exciting pieces but are further back in their development cycle. The time is now for SD.

I said this in the Soto trade thread, but he’s a guy I would give up anything for and give him anything he wanted to keep him here.

Guy is a generational hitter and you can stick him in a tiny left field for half of his games to hide his defense. You could give him a 15 year deal and he would still be under 40 by the time it expired.

I imagine he signs something like a 12 year deal with an opt out after 4 or 5 so he can hit free agency again before turning 30.

It’s a payroll and fit thing, I’ll write about it in more detail later.
