This team and its owner are still living with the ghost of Albert Belle (despite the fact that they had his contract insured), who signed at the time the largest FA contract in team history for $65M (unbelievably the only larger one to date is Miguel Tejada's $72 million deal in 2004 - free agents have avoided Baltimore like the plague since Albert).  They did not detect his chronic hip injury condition and only got two "meh" years of production out of him as a result (for the go-go PED 90s), so they have had a history since then of being over board on the physicals and bailing when spooked....

This owner stayed at a Holiday Inn last night.

Turns out he has back problems leading to the O's offering a MiL deal instead of a ML deal. Non-story here.

Looks like the O's approach is biting them in the ass now.

  • One factor in Bronson Arroyo's decision to sign with the Diamondbacks rather than the Oriolesreports Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun, was the fact that Baltimore had scrapped deals with Grant Balfour and Tyler Colvin over concerns with their physicals. The O's offer was on par with that of the D-Backs: it was for slightly less guaranteed money, but carried a greater third-year option value. While Connolly writes that other factors -- including a preference for the NL West -- certainly played a role, he says that the risk of a deal falling apart at this stage of the off-season weighed substantially in Arroyo's decision-making process.

Hmm, do I want to pitch in the NL West or the AL East?

HMMM, too close to call...oh wait, these guys had problems with two physicals, that's the clincher.

He's giving up a 3rd year option by choosing the NL West.  Thats a value that I bet is more important to Arroyo than which league he pitches in given how little interest he generated this offseason while pitching in the NL Central
