I seriously don't understand the point of the fake crowd noise.
The players want it for several reasons. Among them: (1) It creates a more "normal" feel in the ballpark. (2) The background noise allows the players to communicate without being overheard by the opposing players and bench.

So while it may seem weird to us, the players very much prefer it and they have good reason to prefer it.

Oh wow I totally forgot that it was actually being piped into the ballpark. I was thinking it was just overlaid on the broadcast.
