Strange injury. If it really is from a dive in September, it's not really a "stress fracture". Stress fracture by definition is an overuse injury, not related to a single traumatic event.

Perhaps a fracture that never healed properly, though it sounds like the link to the September is pretty soft.
Judge worked out hard in the off-season. Maybe that’s how the stress fracture developed from the initial injury.

Could be, it's all sort of semantics anyway. Stress fractures are the result of abnormal stress put on a normal bone, so if he had an injury and then repeated stress on an abnormal bone resulted in a true fracture to develop, that's not really a stress fracture (Normal stress placed on an abnormal bone is an insufficiency fracture). Maybe he works out so hard it's a combo, abnormal stress and abnormal bone.

But whatever, doesn't really matter. I guess he has a 1st rib fracture, certainly an atypical injury but can happen.

The real worry is whether Judge is going to be an injury-prone athlete, too brittle to be counted on by his teammates. I think it is a testament to his character, and to Chris Sale, for that matter, that they are mainly frustrated by letting their teammates down.

I like testing the depth and seeing whether those guys can actually play or not, but Judge is (obviously) my guy and they are a notch more fun to watch with him in there. Stop diving so much though!!
It helped make him a really good right fielder last year. By the fielding bible numbers he was better than Betts. 3 years ago I never thought that could happen.

Mysterious Rib injury turns out to be fracture. The Curse of Jacoby Ellsbury by any chance? Come to think of it there have been an awful lot of injuries since he last played a game.

I can’t cut and paste from my ESPN fantasy app, but it had an update on Judge’s rehab so here’s a screenshot I figured I’d post so Crow and Jon Abbey can freak out thinking he got hit by a bus or something when they see the thread bumped.

Heh, it's remarkable how little I can manage to care about almost anything Yankee/baseball-related until there is a path to playing.

I know it's easily transmittable in many ways, but if it can be passed through thread proximity, I think we're all in trouble.

He is allegedly a hundred percent, I am personally quite dubious but I guess we'll see.

If Baltimore and Boston pitching can't get ya going, nothing can!

Missed the first homer last night, but dear lord that second one was smoked

He has pulled five of his six HRs this year, he only hit six to LF all of 2019. His career HR spray chart is a remarkable thing:

This is a crazy spray. Playing so much in Yankee Stadium and short right in Fenway, are there a fair amount of those to right fields in those places? It’s gonna be Maris/Mantle, Papi/Manny territory again with Stanton. He’s phenomenal and must see AB’s.

This is a very sad day, no longer can we hope...what might have been. He is and will remain too fragile to ever reach anywhere near the greatness of which he could have been able. There is no drain cover to blame, no moral or spiritual or character defect to blame, no lack of work ethic or focus to blame. His body simply betrays him. Sigh....

The similarities in size and rate of injury between Judge and Stanton leads me to believe baseball cannot be played daily by people this big, this muscular, and this fast. Among players this big, I can only recall Frank Howard, who never ran hard enough to break a sweat. Nor did he fine-tune his muscles with weight training. I can’t think of any other position players over 6-6 and 250 who played every day.

Ceil and Prince Fielder? Dimitri Young? Made a couple All Star teams, but had to leave the game due to getting the diabetes

I thought Calvin Pickering was going to be something . . . I won't mention Panda
The Fielders were both borderline fat from the very beginning of their careers, I believe the polite term used was 'chunky' and way over the border at the ends...Aaron has never been that....

Are you saying fat is safer than muscular? That’s got some real old-timey boxing coach vibes to it.

I think Sherman is way high on the AAV there, maybe 6/192? It's going to hurt but he deserves it, he is also still a really good defender.

Whoa, the last post was in 2020 from Coup, but it's nice to have a thread on a player all the way from draft day to MVP runner-up to free agency, so I bumped this one.

OK, a couple of quick comparisons:

Mookie Betts: FA at 28, 37.4 bWAR in the 5 years preceding. He signed for 12/365.

Freddie Freeman: FA at 32, 21.8 bWAR in the 5 years preceding. He signed for 6/162.

Aaron Judge: FA at 30, 26.7 bWAR in the 5 years preceding.

I think it might take 8/240.

That doesn’t mean long-term contracts, it’s the arb process for their 2022 salaries and they’re trying to agree to avoid actual arbitration in the middle of the season.

NY settled with everyone except Judge, they filed for $17M and he wants $21M. I don't know if NY fully grasps that this is the rare case where they need the player more than the player needs them, give him his $21M for 2022 and offer him the 8/240 through 2030 (eek) that I arrived at above.

If you factor in that is a season before he hits the market so protection against injury/poor performance, so essentially a 9/261 deal (although probably not structured that way to keep the 2022 number down a bit), that seems quite fair at the least. Judge has played four full-length seasons plus the shortened 2020 (25-29 age) and has played 140+ games twice, he is a perennial MVP candidate when he is healthy but we all know he is not always healthy. He played 80 percent of the games in his peak athletic years, what percentage would NY get from 30-38, 70 percent? Less? It doesn't matter, Cashman has to do this and he has to do it before the season if at all possible, IMO. 8/240 plus 21 this year might be my limit though.

Get this done Brian, unless he wants even more than 21 plus 8/240. Give the man his money, you need him more than he needs you.

Also this eventual negotiation is a big reason why Cashman pulled the trigger on the long Stanton contract 4+ years ago, you want Judge to stay but at least you have Stanton for RF with 5/110 (AAV) remaining if somehow he doesn’t.

Yup. Beltran sucks at commentating too. ;)

Though I'm guessing he really isn't 'hoping' and did in fact hear something. Bad OPSEC maybe.

Would love to see Judge in a Pirates uniform.
Although, totally anecdotally- I don’t recall Judge beating the Sox in ways that when I think of Matsui I still get scared.
