I read an article about Judge and the Astros controversy, and he didn’t mention kids at all. His disdain was that the Astros did not earn the title. BTW, the funniest quote regarding the Astros that I read came from Gleyber who used him cheating Severino in a video game as an analogy to explain why he believes the Astros also cheated in 2018 and 2019.
From USA Today article earlier this week:

“All I ever heard about on TV was baseball and sign-stealing,’’ Judge said. “Cheating. Cheating. Cheating. I grew up a fan of baseball, I don’t want to see that. I don’t want little kids looking up to us and treating us like we’re super-humans. 'Daddy, why is so-and-so cheating? What’s up with that?’ That was the toughest thing for me, just all of the talk about cheating man, and destroying the great reputation this great game has.’’

I wasn’t contradicting your postings in any way, and I guess I should have made that clear. My point was that Judge said a lot more across other articles.

I know Judge wasn’t a part of the era, but the ‘What about the kids?’ hand wringing by current players is hysterical given that the union fought steroid testing for decades, and all the current players are benefiting from that eras salaries.

And no doubt someone like Judge would be backing the MLBPA if Manfred had gone after individual players.

No problem. Just trying to have a discussion and all points people make here are valid.

Sony and the Playstation Network need to levy a hefty fine/suspension on Gleyber. That much is obvious at this point. If he's earned any virtual pieces of metal or other in-game achievements they need to be annulled as well or even retroactively awarded to Severino.

According to a Rotoworld blurb, citing Meredith Marakovits on Twitter, Judge is being sent for tests on his shoulder. Sounds like he tried to take some swings, and this is the result.

I hope he’s okay. He’s a fun player to watch, and (apologies for the off-topic comment) I find myself becoming more of a fan of watching specific players as I get older.

With regard to the thread title, and senstitive to the issues of separation of church and plate, given Judge's growing injury history perhaps a title change is warranted.

Only an orthopedic surgeon can judge Judge.

I heard Cashman talking about this just now on the radio, he didn't seem concerned that it was anything too serious. He said Judge is going through a bunch of tests so they can try to pin it down, but the guess is that it is just something muscular/short-term.

My espn fantasy app says Judge’s pain has moved from shoulder to pec and the team still has no idea what’s up.

I’d assume it’s the result of some sort of overcompensation when swinging? Like when your ankle hurts then you get hip pain later in the week.

It’s pretty strange, he doesn’t think it’s serious but they’ve done tons of tests and can’t seem to figure it out.

Maybe it's just a coincidence, or maybe doctors are becoming more circumspect with their diagnoses as stakes continue to rise, but between Judge, Verdugo, Fultz and Sale, there seems to be a lot of shoulder shrugging and chin rubbing from the medical community lately.

An outfield dive in September? Come on. You mean to tell me it didn't affect him in the postseason or in offseason training?
Guys try to play through things all the time, Voit talked this week about how much more damage he did to his core by playing through it last season.

It's pretty disturbing that all of Paxton, Severino and Judge had injuries late last season and didn't really get diagnosed until 4-5 months later, though.

He wasn't playing in the offseason though. How does it not hurt lifting, swinging in the cage, etc and he doesn't say anything?

The medical tests had real trouble finding the problem also, so who knows. It sucks they didn't diagnose it 4-5 months ago though, certainly.

I think it’s on the players as much as the doctors to report injuries. But in the off-season, they want to relax and hope rest heals whatever ails them. This has been going on forever.

Huh. I thought stress fractures generally heal with time and reduced activity. If it didn't heal between September and now (maybe because of normal movement/breathing) can it heal at all without surgery?

I'm more worried than ever.

Judge may want to consider signing a team friendly long-term deal at this point

Injuries were never this frequent in the old days, except for guys with muscles, like The Mick and Coup’s hero, Moose Skowron.

Pause.

Okay, Boomer!

Judge told The Athletic in an article published this afternoon that if he knew last October he had a rib fracture, he would have cut back on his off-season workouts.

Mick was plenty healthy (considering the amount of nightlife and alcohol Billy and the boys introduced him to...) until he caught his foot in that damn drain....from then on it was never the same. If only there had been Dr. Andrews and today's skills to work on him back then....

I’m not worried because we’ve experienced an unprecedented amount of injuries last year, and I don’t want to say accustomed to such news but definitely not shocking anymore. Well Sevy’s was a shock, though.

But, dammit, it would be nice to get a full season from some of our favorite players so we can see those numbers.

I like testing the depth and seeing whether those guys can actually play or not, but Judge is (obviously) my guy and they are a notch more fun to watch with him in there. Stop diving so much though!!

Also people are forgetting Zack Granite on the OF depth chart because he has not done much so far this spring, but the same Fangraphs guy (Alex Chamberlain) who presciently championed Mike Tauchman in 2018/19 also championed Granite in March 2019, he is still 27:

Zack Granite, TEX OF (MLB)
Cistulli Fringe Fiver

When Paul Sporer, Brad, and I discussed reviving the Fringe Five for fantasy, I jokingly asked, “Well, how do you feel about Zack Granite?” Brad immediately gushed about him, and I knew this would all work out just fine.

Granite, designated for assignment by the Twins, an organization loaded with toolsy (but not particularly contact-oriented) outfielders, latched onto the Rangers’ organization. In the minors, he was a perpetual threat to walk as often as he struck out. Since the start of 2016, he has compiled a tidy 2.7% swinging strike rate (SwStr%); in his 107-plate appearance debut last year, he whittled it down to 1.9% (while, yes, walking more than he struck out). Perhaps more importantly, he stole 56 bases as recently as 2016 and has still shown the aptitude to steal double-digit bases when presented the opportunity. Granite lacks the daylight in Arlington to make a splash, but it’s not like the Rangers scooped him up for no reason, either.

(I brazenly told Paul I’d be willing to bet Granite has a better career than Byron Buxton, if you need a measure of stupidity for my enthusiasm.)

This guy’s defense is good and had a 0.4 bref dWAR in only 40 games or 107 PA. If his offense matches that and another Tauchman emerges, great, and if not, he can be a good defensive substitute.

Ellsbury had a rib fracture (and re-fracture) with the Sox which seemingly took forever to heal. Ribs are tricky.

If you need some OF depth, he's probably healed now and a FA.

I will always think of Ellsbury in a Red Sox uniform. Where did he end up after leaving Boston?

He was beloved in Boston, giving free tacos to a starving city. But then he fell off the face of the earth. Just disappeared. There was a story that he hit the lottery and retired.
I heard he parachuted out of a plane with a bag of money.

They made a movie out of Ellsbury's life. In it, he scares the crap out of Elisabeth Moss

Strange injury. If it really is from a dive in September, it's not really a "stress fracture". Stress fracture by definition is an overuse injury, not related to a single traumatic event.

Perhaps a fracture that never healed properly, though it sounds like the link to the September is pretty soft.

Judge worked out hard in the off-season. Maybe that’s how the stress fracture developed from the initial injury.

Could be, it's all sort of semantics anyway. Stress fractures are the result of abnormal stress put on a normal bone, so if he had an injury and then repeated stress on an abnormal bone resulted in a true fracture to develop, that's not really a stress fracture (Normal stress placed on an abnormal bone is an insufficiency fracture). Maybe he works out so hard it's a combo, abnormal stress and abnormal bone.

But whatever, doesn't really matter. I guess he has a 1st rib fracture, certainly an atypical injury but can happen.
