It just popped up on NBCSN this morning, but ending of South Korea-China was nuts. China had the hammer with the score tied and fucked up a pretty easy shot so it went to a ninth end, SK got the hammer back but they didn't hit a Chinese stone hard enough near the button, China swept it barely out of range and picked up a complete clownshow win.

Wait, was this the same one that China was leading 6-1? I was watching before I left for work and it looked like a blowout. Wow.

It was 7-7 in the last end, might have ended 8-7 or 9-7. Just a real mess for the last throws of ends 8/9.

Yeah, Korea picked up a 4 at one point (I think to pull within 6-5), and then they traded shots to the finish. I didn't understand why Korea got the hammer in the 9th end after the Chinese had the hammer in the blanked 8th end; is that a rule specific to the Mixed Doubles format?

Mixed doubles is so much quicker and easier to watch. I'm a fan.

Hamiltons are playing the Swiss team on NBCSN right now. Apparently they're a gold medal favorite but USA is up 3-1 in the 5th.

I don't know why, because I don't even know all the rules, but I can't get enough curling.

Ended up giving up what, 6 in the last end ?
Yeah I didn't even notice that until after I'd changed the channel to figure skating (fuck ya bro). It's kind of deceiving, as they had a chance to force an extra end with the hammer, but she was blowing every big shot in the second half of the game (match?). They could've easily won that.

I just looked it up, and it is a rule specific to Mixed Doubles: if neither team scores, then the team that threw the first stone in the end gets to decide the hammer in the next end (and note that unlike with the regular game, the hammer is not prescribed, the non-scoring team always has first choice and can choose not to take the hammer).

How is the US always so freaking bad?
I'm not saying I could do it any better or anything, but damn, it's like they're not even in the same class as this Korean team. Weren't the Americans favored here? Bad decisions, bad throws or shots or whatever they're called...

OMG, that was the worst shot I've ever seen. The US is lying 4 and the Koreans have 1 and the US not only miss the Korean one, they knock out one of their own. It doesn't get any worse than that.

right here
went from possibly 4 to giving up one. After giving up 3 with the hammer last end.
Maybe they have money on the Koreans?

They went from lying 4 with the rock, in the 4th end, to losing a point. I think that's pretty hard to do, no?

On those last two throws, I don't think they were within half a rock of where they were trying to hit. They literally hit the wrong side of the Korean rock both times.

Becca's was closer than Matt's. Matt missed by about a full rock (he wanted to hit and stick), Becca only missed by about half a rock.

If I was the Americans, I would just start throwing the thing as fast as I could and smash as many rocks as I can and hope for the best. Like a break in pool. Can't be any worse than what's going on right now.

Favored goes out the window with as well as Korea are shooting (with the exception of the power play end where the U.S. threw it out the window).

The U.S. played poorly, but they would have had a really tough job to win the match even if they'd played well.

The dude calling curling on the live stream is by himself, and he never shuts up. NEVER. He comments on whether they get a green light when releasing the stone, which I didn't even know was a thing because IT ALWAYS HAPPENS. He's killing my interest in watching.

Hamiltons lose again and they're pretty much done, if not officially done. Good shit.

Hogline violation on OAR, three zeros in a row. Koreans lying 4 down 2 with two shots left
Edit - Korea hold on 2 in the last end, which means BONUS CURLING

Insane. the OAR guy just cleared the guard and two korea stones on a deflection, the latter two stones deflected perpendicular to left and right of the shot. They pull off shot I couldn't even dream of.

You can say the shot was . . . revolutionary

The Hamiltons: the Kardashians of American curling, complete and utter flops. NBC makes one last futile attempt to present as 'celebrities' with the scheduled interaction with Couric who they try and sell as just over-the-top delighted to meet the pair. They limit their coverage to still shots as it's doubtful Katie could pull off 2 mins of a convincing shill act with the 'dead fish personality' pair...even after decades of acting like Lauer was a decent human being. There are limits after all....

WTH was that shot? Again, he misses the stone completely, hitting on the wrong side. Why couldn't he see that coming, and have her sweep it? She didn't sweep at all. He needs glasses.

Unreal. What should have been 3 points for the use, ends up being a 1 point steal for Finland. They can't make anything.

Canada getting greedy in the first two ends have netted them -4 points. First end they shot heavy with the hammer trying a raise for 4 and ended up with 2. An easier draw would have gotten them 3. Then lying 2 in 2nd end, they were heavy again with the hammer and ended up with a freeze behind the button that Norway used to get steal a point.

Norway not exactly playing well but Canada mistakes keeping it close

California. Duh.
Just watching the replay now. Canada left an easy draw for 2 short, and only gets 1 to go up 3-2 after 4 ends. The Canadians really did give Norway a lot of chances..

The more you watch curling, the more you realize that it's very rare to always do exactly what you're trying to do, and it seems like it's really important to be able to shake off your mistakes and take advantage of the chances your opponents' mistakes give you. It's clearly harder than it looks.

OAR bro missed what looked like a relatively easy shot to get to the gold medal game in the 8th against SUI. I question his shot choice - should've played for two with the hammer, but it looked like he just went for the "easy" draw for the tie. Too heavy, and the Russians are playing for bronze.
