Ok who was the best Red Sox September Call-Up of all time?

I have no idea how to research such a thing broadly.

My guess was that our namesake, Mr. Horn himself, would be the winner, but he actually played 46 games in his call-up year, so not him. (Side note: Sam Horn's wikipedia page does not mention this site. Seems odd.)

Similarly both X and Ben10 were August call-ups not September.

Has anyone ever been a notable contributor who was only called up after 9/1?

Sort of. Jacoby Ellsbury.

To add more, he was called up for a week in July to cover an injury, played the 2nd half of a DH in August and then was called up for good on September 1st. The rest is history.

Dwayne Hosey had a great September 1995. Ted Cox had a little Wade Boggs in him in September 1977.

You know Fred Lynn put up an OPS+ of 229 in 15 games in 1974. Under this regime he would have been up in June, and they would have been correct.

Edit: Buchholz started on 8/17 then his next game was when pitched his no-hitter on Sept 1 but I think he was a September call-up. Ed: But he did pitch in August so does not qualify.

Because if it doesn't, I'm going to nominate Rich Hill in 2015. Signed to a minor league deal but not brought up until after 9/1. Made his first of four starts on 9/13. I assume given how recent it was, I don't need to post his stats as a reminder.
