Morris turns 30 in September. He’ll be looking at short deals the rest of the way. But going to the Spurs is a good spot for him.

And a fersure $20 mil over the next two years is not a bad payout if you can get it. I was surprised that I liked MaMo much more than I expected to. Didn't love all of his game but liked his effort and from what I could see through the TV, he seemed well liked by his teammates. I am sure he'd appreciate it if his tribute video shows all 146 3 pointers he made last year.

Smart move IMO. A show-me year with a great coach, and he can hit the market again next summer. And it gets him out of the green room.
Hope it works out well for him, it's a good landing spot, and he seems like a good guy.

OKC is trading Jerami Grant to Denver for a 2020 first round pick. OKC has now gained six future first round picks this off-season, and saves $39 million in salary + luxury tax implications. It's a good deal for Denver has Grant is a really useful player in today's NBA and as made improvements each year in the league. OKC looks to be going full re-build so Westbrook has got to be on the move; if they trade him that team is going to be neck-and-neck with Charlotte in the race to the bottom.

I wish the Celtics got Grant. His 3-point shooting went up to almost 40% last year.

So much for that discussion. Good trade for Denver. Westbrook is definitely a goner.

It's double what he was getting paid too, wasn't it? Wasn't he getting $5 mil a year?

The Clippers should maybe have their own thread as they are likely the faves currently, another nice depth move just now:

Shams Charania‏Verified account @ShamsCharania

Free agent forward JaMychal Green is finalizing a two-year, $10M deal to return to the Los Angeles Clippers, with a second-year player option, league sources tell @TheAthleticNBA.
It's an incredibly deep team, as Tom Haberstroh points out in this tweet:

https://twitter.com/tomhaberstroh/status/1148261847008776197

Clippers have 2 full starting lineups now

Patrick Beverley, Landry Shamet, Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, Ivica Zubac
Lou Williams, Rodney MacGruder, Moe Harkless, JaMychal Green, Montrezl Harrell

Yeah that's some rotation. Doc has lots of options with that group though they can still use more size.

Regarding the Grant to Denver trade, that was a fantastic move. The story in the NBA is the Lakers, Clippers and Nets. However what the Nuggets, Pacers, Jazz and Heat (especially if they nab Westbrook) have done is, in some ways, even more impressive.

I love the Nuggets, Pacers, and Jazz, but what’s the case for the Heat? If they get Westbrook, isn’t that just a dime-store OKC East, but with worse supporting talent and Westbrook further on the downside? Butler definitely isn’t at George’s level, and he’s starting to trend a bit the wrong way imo. In the playoffs, he wasn’t the defensive game-changer he used to be, and that’s a lot of his value.

Shams....

Based on conversations among player, agent and team, Oklahoma City for the first time is receptive toward trade calls on franchise star Russell Westbrook, league sources tell @TheAthleticNBA @Stadium This is based upon relationships on all sides — Russell Westbrook, agent Thad Foucher and GM Sam Presti — and collaborating together and examining alternative solutions. Trade timing is challenging this late in the summer due to salaries frozen across NBA from free-agent deals.

Whether you use RPM or PIPM, Butler is far and away better than anything Miami has had in terms of a top player. They won't contend for a championship or anything but I wouldn't be shocked if they were neck and neck with the Celtics this year in terms of record though that isn't my base case. In short, they improved via the Butler acquisition. If they are able to add Westbrook, they will be marginally better than that too (depending on the cost of course).

Gawd dammit. I wanted Grant, but a good deal for both teams

- Warriors made a couple of moves to fill out the roster. They traded Damion Jones to Atlanta for Omari Spellman and signed Alec Burks (who reneged on his OKC deal after the George trade).

- Raptors looking for low-cost reclamation projects as they've signed Stanley Johnson and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and re-signed Pat McCaw. I'd bet at least one of those guys breaks through as a reliable 3-and-D option

- Hawks signed Jabari Parker to a 2-year, $13MM deal (second year is a player option). That's a lot of money for a not-so-good player

I think Russ ends up traded to Miami for Bam, Olynyk, Dragic and a pretty heavily protected FRP.

Russ fits the Heat MO and I think it's going to be one of the only places he will actually want to go.

Warriors are 4M over the hard cap, so Livingston is definitely going to have to go before they can make those deals

Yep. Bobby Marks has them at $219K under the hard cap with 14 players assuming Livingston is waived and they sign both 2nd rounders. They are done with their roster.

They are probably canvassing the league to see if they can dump Livingtston into someone's cap space and avoid the hit for waiving him and stretching the contract.

Figured @benhogan would like this: he mentioned the Celtics as possible trade partners for Sabonis or Turner, using one of their wings:

The Pacers are still one rotation guy short, and the gaping hole is at forward. They could fill it down the line by trading Myles Turner or Domantas Sabonisfor a wing. For now, the Pacers are all-in playing their two bigs together. The results improved last season, in limited minutes. It is a really nice NBA subplot that both Turner and Sabonis want it to work -- that neither sees the other as a threat.

Top big wings rarely become available. They are the most valuable player type in the NBA. Most realistic deals for one amount to Indiana selling low on Sabonis or Turner. One natural trade match to monitor: Boston, with three such players in Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum and Gordon Hayward (and Marcus Smart can play up a position or two) and a shortage of proven bigs.
As suspected, Indy is saying all the right things about making them work together, but we'll see what happens when the games start. It's also a reminder of why it's important to make sure Tatum and Brown are in position to look good on offense: they play at a really premium position, and it's important to both develop them and let other teams dream.

I'm still in mourning about Denver getting the only productive Cuse player left in the NBA. Jerami Grant for a late 1st.

Smart/Yabu/Picks gets us Turner
lovegtm tearjerker special: Brown for Sabonis straight up

Meh, I am fine trading Brown in the right package. I'd just prefer Turner to Sabonis, and Brown needs to juice his value some to make that realistic.

joking right?
MonTrez and Harkless are better than any 4/5 combo the Celtics have. Lou Will is 2x 6th man of the year
Celtics have a really weak 4/5 combo - not sure that comparison is all that relevant. I stand by my original comment - that 2nd "starting" 5 would be the worst in the league. And as they should be, considering they are #6-10 on LAC depth chart

That's 3 pretty good 2nd unit players, not many teams with a better bench, right?

Brown, Langford and Yabu for Turner works, local kid juice (or replace Romeo w/ TL & Semi)

Turner is signed up for 4yrs for $72MM, that gives you some salary certainty.

Far more likely to be Theis or Kanter going the other way than TL/Semi, or Yabu, but yeah. And yes, they'd have to wait until Dec 15, but I don't think Indy is going to make a decision one way or another on the Sabonis/Turner pairing for a few months. They want to see how it works with them together on the floor.

Another guy to keep on our radar for Dec 15 is Larry Nance Jr. (3 for $35MM).
Nance: good defensive player/developing 3pt shot/mobile/assist and steal #s pop

You could land him now for Yabu/Langford/Semi

With regards to the bolded, are you talking money-wise, or do you think that's actually a realistic trade package for Nance? I don't think that even gets you a conversation with Cleveland. He's one of the guys they are actually trying to build around and they've valued him highly since giving up a first round pick to acquire him and then quickly extending him. I agree that if Boston wants to upgrade in the post he should be a target, but the acquisition cost is going to be high.

Money wise/timing. BUT it seems like the Cavs are going nowhere and may be interested in saving $$$ while collecting draft picks and/or recently drafted players. If the Celtics added a draft pick to Langford*/Semi/Yabu that would be more then fair to the Cavs original cost**.

The Cavs like Nance (father/son history), but he started less than half the games he played last season and he has never averaged over 10ppg. Cavs may be in sell mode and build around Garland/Sexton/Porter/Windler/Zizic, all 22 and under.

**The Cavs acquired him by dumping expiring contracts (IT4/Frye) and the 29th pick for both, Nance and Clarkson, to round out their playoff bench/roster. Clarkson has always played more minutes and avg more points. So the Cavs would win both the Laker and this fake Celtic deal in a huge way (Dan Gilbert seems to like to keep score on previous deals :eyeroll: )

https://www.dailynews.com/2018/02/08/lakers-trade-jordan-clarkson-larry-nance-to-cleveland-for-isiah-thomas-channing-frye-and-pick/

*The reality is the Celtics are not dealing Langford before even seeing what they have, so my fake trade is DOA. But I do think we should keep up on Larry Nance's availability.

around the way
Nance has one half-decent year under his belt at age 26. I suppose if you think that there's untapped upside there and really don't like Langford.

Or if you are partial to tall guys.

Is Nance actually good? He’s pretty undersized for his position and I never thought of him as a good defender. He's 6-8/6-9 with a 9ft reach and 7-1 wingspan—you’re basically playing Tatum at center at the point.

I want the Celtics to get a center at some point, but I’d prefer a real defensive presence. Nance is exactly the kind of guy you don’t want—that contract was meh to bad the day it was signed, and I think Cleveland just did it because they had given up a pick for him. He had a hard time getting on the floor against the Hospital Celtics in the playoffs.
