Orlando trades the no.35 pick to the Lakers for a future 2nd and cash.
I realize salaries and roster spots always factor into things but why would Orlando otherwise do that. What are the odds that Orlando ever cashes that pick into a higher spot in 2nd round? 5%, 10%?
Was the cash what pushed it over the edge?
They have 32 as well so little room for two 2nds and a far future pick from whoever is worse Lakers or Wiz is probably going to be decent

This doesn’t make much sense to me…why would they value the 28th pick in the draft over two guys who have proven they can contribute?
Well you can see why they might value it over a smurfy third string guard that’s borderline unplayable in the postseason. I agree that trading Grant for a late first makes little sense.

White/Theis/Nesmith/Fitts/1st. If Beal goes opt in and trade, won’t be a bidding war or anything.

Smart
Beal
Jaylen
Tatum
Rob

Horford
Grant
Pritchard
Alec Burks with the TPE or Bruce Brown with the MLE, to fill out the bench.

Sign and trade with smart/horford going back to Washington. Get it done Brad.

Unless I'm missing something, neither of these deals work. It's not just about matching salaries. Even before making a deal, Boston is way over the tax apron, which is fine if they aren't hard capped. But the sign and trade hard caps them which means they have to reduce salary to make this work. They also wouldn't be able to use the TPE or MLE without further reducing salary to offset the player coming in.

Bottom line: A sign and trade is not a realistic possibility this summer.

An opt-in and trade is not treated the same way as a sign-and-trade, which I agree is not feasible.

Literally everyone here knows that an S&T isn't happening. That's why the post you quoted specifically mentioned the opt-in.

He's got a reasonable chance of making an All-NBA third team in the two years and getting supermax eligible. Siakam (twice), Kemba, Ben Simmons, Julius Randle, Derozan have all made third team (or better) in the last few years. Many of the current All-NBA regulars are aging and/or injury prone.
More than anything else, this is my concern with Jaylen. He has a fairly good shot at being supermax eligible, and Tatum will definitely be eligible. It's really, really hard to build a team with two supermax guys unless they're both incredibly elite, and I don't think Jaylen gets there.

P.s. I'd be astounded if anyone gets Bruce Brown for the MLE. If Brad makes that happen, it's voodoo or something.
Bruce Brown, Kyle Anderson, Batum, Chris Boucher on the MLE (2yr deals + 2nd yr player options) are all kind of pipe dreamy.

The only chance is if it turns into a musical chairs type situation where guys overplay their hands, wait around too long and all the money is gone (ie Dennis Schroeder).

Yeah all those guys seem likely to either get full MLE somewhere or offers from their current team for more than the tax MLE

Here’s “basketball insider” Ric Bucher opining that he would not trade Smart straight up for Beal …. and then a few seconds later saying he would definitely trade Tatum straight up for him.

View: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MmFjlKrhijQ&pp=QAFIAQ%3D%3D

I guess that’s why they pay these clowns the big bucks…

Edit: and then he goes on to opine that LeBron and Kyrie would be a terrible basketball fit, since LeBron is elite only at scoring, and is “at his worst as a playmaker.” My word.

That reminds of of Joe Public who hates LeBron and loudly opines about how he’s selfish and only cares about scoring points.

Ric Bucher has some truly insane takes, and most of them are about LeBron.

The offseason after the Heat lost to the Mavericks in the Finals, Bucher was talking about how you could win a Finals with LeBron but only if he was your 6th man…..(Russillo shared this story on his podcast a few times recently)

Bron will probably finish 4th All-Time in assists ahead of Steve Nash. He was infamously accused of overpassing in big spots early in his career. The biggest criticism of him was the airing of The Decision (which helped The Boys and Girls Club) otherwise I've never seen a superstar in any sport be as untarnished as James (not that I've dug deep on his personal life)

He has always opposed the Celtics so naturally, we root against him but any "unbiased" media person is nutz to disparage Bron (Bayless' schtick is clickbait)

He's a confident and occasionally outspoken black man who fully exercises his agency. Doubt you need too dig far to get at why some folks seem to dislike him so much.

Ooh 2nd round exits here we come
Maybe. It depends on other roster moves. They'd need someone to replace Al, but they are going to need that anyway.

I don't know how I feel about Beal. But adding him to Tatum and JB is a lot different than trading JB for him. The team would also be banking on TL's health.

In an ideal world, I think the C's #1 target should be Mo Bamba but heh. Or Jalen Smith. I don't know how either would work.

edit: I agree if the only move is Beal for Smart and Horford, the team is worse. But I also think they'd be getting the best player in the deal and there would be ring chasers lining up to sign for Boston.

Yeah, a sign and trade for Beal (which that post posited) is a terirble trade for these reasons:
1. The team is worse
2. The defensive identity is gone
3. The hard cap comes in so they can add nothing and end up shallower than before
4. Everyone plays up a position which makes 3 of those guys worse (Tatum, Brown, TL)
5. You set up Jaylen to lose touches, just as he's deciding if he wants to re-sign (he probably is fine playing the 1B or 2 to Tatum, he's not going to want to play the 3rd wheel to the St Louis duo)
6. You take up a huge amount of cap on your highest paid player likely being a not top 25 guy, entering his decline years.

Luckily word is Beal is taking him 1/4 billion to stay in DC and we can get players who fit our team structure better and help us win.

I just don’t think Beal is the right move. I still favor using the draft capital to get somebody like a John Collins, adding a scorer off the bench, and some veteran ring chasers and running the rest of the team back.

I know there's been a lot of talk about the Fournier TPE but I've seen some talk of the Knicks stapling FRPs to contracts. What about Reddish and a FRP into the Hernangomez TPE?

Reddish makes less than $6m. Can't imagine that's worth much more than a 2nd.

The reason the Fournier one is being discussed so often is because it is the largest and runs out in July. They have more time for the others and can wait until next season’s trade deadline.

As noted, Reddish doesn’t make enough to cost a first round pick unless they are desperate (both in terms of needing to dump the contract and finding a taker for it), neither of which is very likely. More importantly, while Fournier is overpaid, he is a useful bench player who would help shore up a need (bench scoring and shooting). Reddish is terrible and would just be burning money for future draft rights, which isn’t desirable.

Wonder what he gets traded for, assuming he does. Jerami Grant would have been nice given the price.

Murray and Young would be interesting.

Now this is a deal that makes sense out of the Murray and Collins rumors...

Trade them for each other (I assume ATL would be adding draft capital).
Spurs can definitely use a big but I’m not sure what they would do to replace Dejounte. Tre Jones looks to be a decent backup PG but I don’t like him as a starter. They have a ton of 2/3’s so clearly they need to figure out a way to ease that log jam. They need developmental minutes for Primo. Figure Branham and Wesley might get the Pop red shirt but Primo saw action so one or both may need minutes as well. Sochan would get backup minutes right away, most likely.

And then you have guys like Vassell, Keldon, Walker, etc.

We’ll see what they do in FA. Ayton still feels like a good fit to me.

I thought that rule was changed a couple years ago? I’m still not sure if a tweet of a pic would qualify though.
Players can be fined for tampering, and Dame should get a fine for this (no idea if he will)

Draymond Green got fined 50K for saying during a broadcast on TNT

It's great to see Book playing well and Phoenix playing well, but get my man out of Phoenix," Green said. "It's not good for him. It's not good for his career. Sorry Chuck (Barkley), but they've got to get Book out of Phoenix. I need my man to go somewhere that he can play great basketball all of the time and win because he's that kind of player."

I think the Spurs aren't all that worried about this year. Collins has more years left and he'll come with other pieces, then they can start moving other guys.

They did just draft 1 clear PG and 2 other guards who could be combos (they like combos, Murray started as one, White was one too). Overall though that roster isn't a playoff roster anyway so it's more about talent and assets than fit at this point.

They’re clearly playing the long game here, which is probably the smart thing to do while GS remains elite. Lots of intriguing pieces so they will probably clearly some of them out for future draft capital.

Problem I see for SA is that Pop remains a great coach and their roster has enough talent to avoid being a true bottom feeder so they’re going to be stuck in NBA purgatory for a long while.

We’ll see what they do with Lonnie Walker. He could be an interesting bench scorer for a lot of teams.

I get the rationale for both Atlanta and San Antonio moving Collins and Murray respectively, but something doesn't feel right. I love Collins and really love Murray, despite his non-shot. Neither team is bottoming. These guys aren't Jerami Grant. Weird fucking offseason so far.

Draymond went on a verbal rampage. Dame tweeted a pic. These two are not alike. We’ll see though.
Oh I don't think they are the same. Nor do I think the penalty should be the same, but I think a 5-10K fine for Dame is reasonable.

Maybe he said other stuff, but I’m a little surprised saying someone should get out of a place is tampering. I would think he wasn’t actually trying to get him to GS, just because I can’t imagine that would work from a cap perspective.
