Is the "little known" part sarcastic? Felt like they mentioned it every time he touched the ball when the Bucks played in Boston in round 2.
Yeah, sarcasm. It’s mentioned all of the time whenever Bucks play the Celtics

This doesn’t make much sense to me…why would they value the 28th pick in the draft over two guys who have proven they can contribute?
I expect they don't, but they may need that pick to do something else they want----so, it would go out in a different trade. Less likely, they want the cost-certainty for the bench of a 1st round pick relatively to fewer years for those guys---but to your point, they are proven and the pick will not be so I suspect that isn't really the goal

Also, there could be someone they love and are targeting, though I wouldn't expect you'd deal PP or GW for speculative pick before you konw the guy you want is there (if at all)

I took the two rumors as separate thoughts: they are trying to get into the first round; and they are willing to trade GW and/or PP, but as a separate transaction from trading for 28.

Here's what he wrote. It's a bit clunky and disjointed which is why I think there is some confusion

Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report indicated in his latest report that the Celtics are one of four teams (Detroit, Utah, Indiana) looking to acquire picks in the back half of the first round. He also signaled that the Celtics appeared ‘willing’ to engage in trade talks on young rotation players such as Payton Pritchard and Grant Williams ‘for the right price.’ The Celtics have also been linked to trade interest in the Warriors’ first round pick at No. 28 overall.

I happened to be in the middle school gym where he played this past Winter and they had his jersey hanging up, which was interesting.

I'm not sure the reports of them making GW and PP available and them hunting the 28th pick are related to one another. Because yes, that would seem like an odd deal for a team that can win now.

This is an easy one. It’s all about the price tag it will take to keep either player and imo especially Grant. We’ve seen this in the past under Ainge as well in allowing easily replaceable 2nd unit guys to walk after their rookie deal, or second deal, to let others overpay them while recycling them with cheap rookie contracts . Big Baby, Olynyk, Avery Bradley, Sullinger, etc etc

If you’re going to be top-heavy with stars you need to find slots on the cheap to not overpay for role players. This is certainly related to the 28th pick as they aren’t going to move up to draft a guy, and pay a guy a guaranteed deal to sit on the end of the bench. The idea of moving up is to acquire someone who is ready to give us minutes immediately.

Edit: Someone mentioned in the other thread about a rumor that moving up to 28 if for Eason out of LSU who would fit our system perfectly with his skillset. He’s like a leaner more athletic version of Grant at a fraction of the cost after next season while on his rookie deal.

suffering from draft day fever early ;)

I like Eason, Lidell, Nembhard, Roddy, Braun but they can slide into 10-15 on the C's roster

Brad isn't in a rush to deal Grant, finding a role player to guard Giannis/Durant is important to playoff success for the foreseeable future. They could squeeze another cheap year out of Grant then let RFA do its work

If NBA execs have an inkling that Eason is capable of playing Grant's D then he's going in the top15

Yeah I don’t get that rumor as I have Eason much higher than 28 unless getting into the 1st round is a prelude to a swap later. The fit on the court is ideal but logistically it would appear to be difficult to execute.

It's easy to get caught up in it. Eason looks all world against Vandy's 2nd stringers.

His 7'2' wingspan, build and bounciness is draft-day porn

Hot Take Alert!!

I’ve heard two Connaughton interviews discussing his baseball career. The first was when he entered the league where he says that he wants to play in the NBA until he’s 30 and then pitch in the bigs until he’s 40. The second was on The Dan Patrick Show last year when he flat out says that he hasn’t given up on the dream and still has an off-season throwing program. He also said that he told Christian Yelish that who knows they may be teammates down the road.

So the hot take is that Connaughton isn’t hitting the market to find a 4-yr deal bc he wants to stay in Milwaukee to finish up his basketball career next season prior to taking his 97-mph fastball to the minors to work his way up to the bigs.
I also heard a thing about him last year where he put all his money in the bank except for buying a jeep so he's one of those who might not care so much about getting paid but has a longer term life plan like the baseball thing.

I have bad memories in that gym from my son's games. His school was pretty damn good for hoop for 781, but St. Agnes was always loaded with skilled bigs. Only place we would go where half the team was 5'9" or taller, and they always had a few 6'2" kids. I think that we won there once in 3 years.

I don’t know anything about that but if this was true and NOT about the money wouldn’t Pat pursuing his dream of playing basketball AND baseball be even more in play rather than less? If it’s about the money he stays in the NBA…..if it’s about life dreams and experiences it would seem that a pursuit of baseball seems logical to be his best move, no?

Yes, that could be the case, but also I think it's that he sees both sports as a stop on the way. Here are bits from his Wikipedia page:

Connaughton only allowed himself one luxury with his signing bonus, buying a new Jeep Wrangler. He told Goodman, "The signing bonus is a ton of money, especially for a 21-year-old. But I'm not going to live off that money. At some point, I'm going to live off a college degree."[3]
Connaughton is the president of a development firm. In March 2020, Connaughton and the firm drew criticism for razing a historic building in order to make way for a new apartment complex in Milwaukee.[33][34] He is also a landlord, and has invested in Bitcoin.[35]

Who has the contracts & picks to get Simmons at $35 mil? Presumably, the Nets even in blow it up mode might choose to let him play for a month or two before they trade him to re-establish value.

A shame Joe Harris' salary is $150k above the TPE+wiggle room....he'd be a great get.

I bet the Nets price for KD starts at either an All-NBA caliber player, or a young rising all-star plus. They won't bother to tank.
So for LAL they ask for AD, from LAC... PG13 is in the deal. MIN you want him? KAT or Edwards in the deal, BOS.. Jaylen Brown is the base, Utah? Let's talk Mitchell, DEN... gonna need Jamal Murray, TOR... probably Siakam or Barnes, NOP... Ingram or Zion.

Etc, etc.

Plus Kyrie seems set to opt-in and trade if KD is going, so while not full value, they'll get good players/picks out of that.
Roll into the season with whatever they get, Curry, Simmons... it could be a decent team. Then maybe sell some of the oldest guys at the deadline.

Who says no to a hypothetical Durant for Jaylen+ deal? Would be risky for Boston from age/injury standpoint but, man, Tatum/Durant combo would be absolutely lethal.

Horford + White + pick bonanza

TL
Durant
Tatum
Brown
Smart

Bench

Who cares...Duck Boats!
Add Jaylen to Horford and White and Picks to get the call past the secretary.

Edit: Actually they’d have no use for Horford. Jaylen, White and Picks gets us in the conversation and probably leads to a boat ride too.

Something to keep in mind regarding a Jaylen swap, he's only signed for 2 more years. Him re-signing is far from guaranteed, especially because he seems unlikely to qualify for the super max. Barring injury (certainly a concern, though Jaylen isn't exactly an ironman), Durant will definitely be far better over the next two years, and even in years 3 and 4 (when Jaylen may overtake him), the simple fact that he's still under contract makes Durant more valuable.

No doubt and I’m not worried about Durant’s injury history any more than Jaylen. Aside from the Achilles he did a hamstring this year without any other significant injuries since his foot nearly a decade ago.

If Durant wants out and limits his teams to serious contenders, who’s beating Jaylen alone, and with what? And if Durant demands the Celtics, what leverage does Brooklyn have?

Welcome to the modern NBA.

I mean Brown could also leave town in a couple years, too, so there’s no guarantee you’re getting his prime years. Maybe he’ll join Ye over on the West Coast.

He's got a reasonable chance of making an All-NBA third team in the two years and getting supermax eligible. Siakam (twice), Kemba, Ben Simmons, Julius Randle, Derozan have all made third team (or better) in the last few years. Many of the current All-NBA regulars are aging and/or injury prone.

Chicago built around LaVine, Utah, San Antonio, Clippers……I’m sure Durant would not be short suitors.

It's not a zero percent chance, but it's not great. He's made just one all star team and he's the clear #2 on his own team - all the guys on the above list were the #1 option on their team (or 1A). Simmons is the only exception, and it helped that Embiid only played 51 games that year.

On one hand, Jaylen received the 8th most votes for a forward, meaning he only needs to jump two forwards to get to 3rd team. On the other hand, he got only 3 votes total. It will take more than luck and some guys aging out (especially considering guys like Simmons, Kawhi and Zion may be back next year vying for the same spots), he's gotta take a solid step forward, I think.

The leverage they have is he has 4 years on his contract and he has no interest in sitting out a year.

Also why would he limit it to the Celtics when there are plenty of contenders, some in cities he'd prefer?

Orlando trades the no.35 pick to the Lakers for a future 2nd and cash.
I realize salaries and roster spots always factor into things but why would Orlando otherwise do that. What are the odds that Orlando ever cashes that pick into a higher spot in 2nd round? 5%, 10%?
Was the cash what pushed it over the edge?
