The only way you could say he is likely to play in the NBA is if you are counting on massive nepotism. Which might be decent bet. But based on talent alone the odds appear to be against him.
I mean, it's not like guys haven't gotten shots on nepotism before... Giannis' brothers, LiAngelo Ball, I mean JR Smith got his brother a job. You 100% trade a roster spot for LeBron. He's doing him huge favor in that he'll get him in the door. Yes he'll never be LeBron, but who knows maybe he gets in the door and surprises people and sticks around a few years.

He needs another 3 inch growth spurt or a pretty serious talent bump to be a likely future NBA guy at this point (aside from nepotism).

He’s an athletic (not like his Dad of course) undersized combo guard without a high level skill set.

I don’t like Lebron but certainly hope his son makes it, would be cool. What do I have against his son?

Seems unlikely he ever gets playing time as a legit NBA player but stranger things have happened with guys at his current level/age.

The Lakers have supposedly "pledged" to LBJ that they'd pursue Kyrie and improve the team. But they have traded so many picks, they're down to offering their '27 and '29 first rounders.

The Nets are apparently demanding more than picks for Kyrie, but I have no idea who the Lakers can offer unless the Nets love THT and/or Austin Reaves.

They can also offer two swaps, if memory serves.

Lakers' 27/29+2 unprotected swaps would be a HAUL for Kyrie, especially with how bleak the Lakers' post-LBJ prospects look (I know, they often pull rabbits out, but they also had a brutal post-Kobe stretch).

The Nets could take those draft assets, and find a way to upgrade the team after. I wouldn't look a gift-horse in the mouth by trying to also find a 3rd team simultaneously.

I would think that haul (including the swaps) would get them Donovan Mitchell, or at least very close to it. But perhaps Lebron insists on Kyrie instead. The Nets could then use the Laker picks to trade for DM, who is close with JB. The Nets could then possibly see if KD is more willing to play with DM (unlikely) or accept the Celtics JB/White/picks package. Moving on from two older stars to two guards in their prime would have to be viewed as a haul.

It’s probably way too many large moving parts to ever happen but would seem to accomplish the goals of all 4 teams.

I would guess that isn't enough to get Mitchell, primarily because the Lakers picks are so far into the future. Hard to be sure either way.

If you're the Nets part of the complexity on dealing Kyrie is you also want an idea of what you're doing with KD right? You can wishcast KD choosing to play rather than sit with Kyrie there, but once you deal Kyrie for picks you're in a "must move" situation with KD. So your idea of bringing back Mitchell is an interesting direction, even if I'm not sure I see the deal that makes it happen

Danny Ainge isnt trading Donavan Mitchell to the lakers. I cant see that happening in any universe.

That lebron extension reminds me of Kobe's last extension with the Lakers.

I agree the bar for Ainge helping the Lakers is high; I do think he's willing for the right price. Ditto the Heat, frankly.

Yeah, I'm sure Ainge will send DMitch to the highest bidder. There's 0 chance that's the Lakers - especially considering their salary match is RW.

I'm guessing @Jakarta was speculating on some crazy monster (Nets blow it up) trade like:

1. Lakers add: Kyrie + Clarkson or PatBev
2. Nets add: Mitchell + Brown + Derrick White + RWB (maybe use him to get Turner/Hield)
3. Boston adds: Kevin Durant
4. Utah adds: Ben Simmons + picks (2 Lakers picks + 2 Laker swaps + Boston pick)

Yeah this is a great callout. Nets can dream right now. Charm KD, kick Kyrie can down the road at least for now, Simmons rediscovers his love for basketball and health, and you have something. Once the bus leaves with Kyrie, your hand is forced on KD. Everything is up in the air. Maybe internally they know that's where they are already, but we'll know that if Kyrie packs. Probably even if Mitchell is coming back.

This was my line of thought as well, but I don’t think the Nets want to blow it up on account of not holding their own draft picks. I think they’d keep Simmons, and try to rebuild value this year. If the guy actually plays, a core of JB/DM/Simmons is pretty fantastic. The above would work with RWB going to Utah and Rudy Gay going to the Nets. Maybe one less swap to Utah.

If KD does quit on them (no-show) there is no reason to keep Kyrie/Simmons around, hence "blow it up". Adding young talented All-Star quality players in Mitchell/Brown probably keeps the Nets somewhat competitive now while having an interesting future.

BUT I suspect KD will show up and the Nets will try to win with what they have

Also note, that Simmons and Mitchell can not play on the same roster (Designated Rookie Rule).

Your second paragraph is spot on. I imagine this is why the Nets have asked for more than the two picks when, based on all of the reporting before, the Lakers had met their previous ask by including the two picks.

It’s pretty obvious that, at this point, the Nets plan is to keep everyone they have and force KD to follow through on his threats and actually miss regular season games. The organization just went through the Kyrie shit show last year so I doubt they give a fuck if KD sits out of training camp.

It’s an interesting game of chicken. Right now, I really don’t think the Nets cave and they are calling KD’s bluff.

Another underrated part of this is that Durant’s agent is Rich Kleinman, who doesn’t have nearly the sway of Klutch or the other big sports agencies. I don’t think the Nets fear that pissing Durant off will effect their dealings with any other players because I don’t believe Kleinman even represents anyone else other than KD.

Add it all up and it just seems like the Nets are in the perfect position to not kowtow to what KD wants

I would add Durant's age to that equation. He doesnt exactly have all the time in the world to be throwing away a year sitting out

Funny shit. Guy got 75 minutes in a 7 game series and wasn't injured. Maybe he has bigger problems than getting the white glove treatment in the locker room.
Obviously he does. When 75% of people think you can't get an erection, it's a problem.

What does the fact that he makes 16m a year and didnt play in the playoffs have to do with his take about the shitty locker room? Connaughton also said the same thing.

I have heard a few interviews with Robinson. We should want more players to be as honest and forthright and not shit on them when they say something that hurts your feelings (and weird that something as benign as criticizing the visitor locker room would set some of you off).

Weirder still that he would bother to dump on the visitors locker room. Literally thousands of basketball and hockey players have paraded through that locker room since it opened and this is the first sneer i’ve heard. And it’s not even about the cold showers and the heat you can’t turn off in the summer and on in the winter.

I don't care about the 16M, but it would be more informative to get this locker room datum from guys who play. Like who cares what Sam Hauser thinks about the Miami locker room. I doubt Pat Riley does.

Guy was on the bench for an injury-depleted team in a conference finals. Our guys took turns embarrassing Max Strus while Duncan was doing a Michelin rating. Guy maybe should be figuring out how to get himself on the floor.

LeBron, Tatum, IT, Aaron Gordon, Holmgren, Paolo and two other players I don't know, are all playing!

It's insane that Seattle still doesn't have a team.

Given the extensive hoops culture around Seattle as well as that it seems like a great sports town, its kind of astounding that the NBA hasn't figured out a way to get a team there yet. It feels inevitable that the Sonics will return but maybe not...

It’s being reserved for LeBron’s retirement in three years, when Fenway Sports Group gets the Las Vegas expansion team (with LBJ as the public face). Seattle’s going to be the other expansion team and one of the Eastern teams (Memphis probably) goes to the Eastern conference.

The pro am game was called early because of precipitation on the court.

The Knicks need Mitchell (or some other credible star) a lot more than Ainge needs to trade Mitchell there. So while I find it very easy to believe Ainge asked for a ridiculous haul, the Knicks are likely operating from the weaker position.

Also, while they have a lot of picks many of them are protected/not prime picks....and assuming reports that Barrett isn't likely part of the deal they aren't putting in a premium young player either. So reporting on their offer is likely to overstate the real value of it

yep, the Knicks are the motivated buyer here

I'd guess Danny will start floating other teams interested in Mitchell via Shams/Woj. Eventually extracting from the NYKs unprotected kitty. Adding Dono won't take the Knicks out of play-in game hell in an improving EC.

Grimes/Quickley /MRob are three young, interesting players that would have roles in a UTAH rebuild.

Playing Dono, Brunsen, Fournier, RJ, Randle, Reddish, Toppin, & Rose nightly will have Thibs popping meds on the sidelines o_O
Eight players looking to get THEIRS and nobody getting back on D. I could see that group imploding in a couple of seasons after the shine wears off.

Those are all somewhat interesting players, but MRob is not obviously a fit for Utah's timeline, and it's not clear Grimes and Quickly are anything more than rotation guys. None of which is bad---there's value in all of them--but distinguishing between "we need to make this move to get this asset now" and "there's a bunch of stuff" is pretty important in terms of the seller's urgency. The Knicks are very much a "bunch of stuff" team.

MRob is 24 (signed 4yrs/$60M). Getting his prime years would be fine. Will/Danny may even see a TimeLord-esque 5.
PLUS Utah will have salary room once they strip mine their roster over the next year (PatBev, Beasley, Clarkson, Bojan, Gay, Conley)

I'm definitely guilty of liking Grimes/Quickly much more than most (since draft night). So I can see why they would be met with a yawn. They have Maxey ceiling/potential with minutes IMO.

If you are trading Mitchell, the most likely plan is to tank this year and likely next to maximize benefit of your own picks---Robinson is not helpful there (though he's not so good as to really jeopardize the overall plan either). If you get him, you are at least as likely to deal him in the next year as keep him for that full contract, I'd guess.

Like I said, all those guys are assets. But none are really a clear fit for what Utah is likely to try to do, which is tank for a couple years and then rebuild with picks from there.

Remember, Mitchell's Smurf-like height is deceiving. He's got a 6' 10" wingspan (but he's not a great defender, so I suppose all for naught).

Extra podcast POINTZ at maintaining a healthy Miami Glow, definitely 100% natural sunlight. Expecting his offseason work to include highlighted tips and a tattoo sleeve... expecting a South Florida female demo bump
