The Orioles have acquired Darwinzon Hernandez from the Red Sox for cash. Baltimore designated Lewin Diaz for assignment to clear the roster spot. Diaz has been DFA'd four times and traded once in less than 2 months.

I like the idea of 7ft walls. Lots of exciting robbed homers are possible.
Eh. Standing reach is over 7 ft. Their 8.5 feet walls were fine for robbing HRs. And I actually like having some taller walls that force OFs to play caroms and can lead to a few more triples.

Presumably, the cash will have a lower walk rate.

For the OOTP fans in the house, he's a real life Curtis Burkholder this winter.

MLB created a new position to oversee local media, and hired Billy Chambers for the role.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2023/01/12/mlb-hires-local-media-executive/

Major League Baseball announced Thursday that it hired Billy Chambers to fill the newly created position of executive vice president of local media. The creation of the job is meaningful as the league confronts a murky future for regional sports networks, which broadcast the vast majority of games in local markets.
Hopefully this will eventually help with getting rid of blackouts. Manfred seems to be aware that the current local network model isn't working too well.

In December, Commissioner Rob Manfred said the RSN model as it exists today is “probably not sustainable over the long haul as a result of the number of people that are opting out of the cable bundle.” Manfred said he was interested in “trying to come up with a new model that is more sustainable and, most important from our perspective, gives us better reach in terms of fans being able to get games, whether they’re in the bundle or out of the bundle.”
Hiring Chambers is a step in that direction, as the league plots how it will monetize and distribute local TV rights. Another issue that will likely be part of Chambers’s portfolio is local blackout restrictions, which have frustrated some fans who cannot watch the team that plays nearest to them because of TV rights contracts.
Chambers comes from Sinclair Broadcasting, of all places.

The trouble has been felt most acutely by Sinclair Broadcast Company, which in 2019 paid more than $10 billion to buy around 20 networks from Disney. Late last year, Sinclair wrote down the debt from the purchase for a second time, citing losses of more than $1 billion in the third quarter of 2022. The company also said that its linear TV subscribers were down 10 percent year over year, and its cash flow was half of what it was projected to be at the beginning of the year.

That doesn't sound like a guy who is going to give the Braves one of their patented discounted extensions.

Jeez, hard to imagine a guy coming across worse than Angelos. What a condescending prick. It’s not as if it was even a confrontational question, really.

Nothing confusing about it, Arraez is a huge upgrade to Miami's 1B/DH combo of Garrett "Tin Man" Cooper and Jorge Solar. He can still play 2B if necessary, but that hasn't been his primary position.

The Twins are also supposed to be getting a good prospect plus another flyer type in the deal.

Seems like an overpay for Miami. Arraez has no power or speed to speak of and looks like a below average fielder according to OAA. What am I missing?

Seems like an unbelievable trade for the Twins.
Interesting, I see it the other way. Unless there's some reason he can't play 2B anymore, I think Arraez is extremely valuable. López is a decent #2-3 but seems like an injury risk and there's one fewer year of control.

In this case, that something is a 19 y/o SS who wasn't great in A+ last year but was really good in the FCL the year before. He supposed to be a potential 30/30 guy who they signed as an IFA for $2.8m in '22.

& a 17 y/o OF who is really fast & crushed the Dominican Summer League. Not sure how much Chourio cost, but he was in the '22 IFA class.

If Marlins knew something about Salas as a sell high, ok. But seems like at a glance they valued ALL-STAR BATTING CHAMPION major leaguer more than anything.

If Lopez's shoulder stays healthy, I don't see how the Marlins win this deal:

Early returns on Kim Ng as head honcho aren't great, but I guess we'll see.

I would say BTV is probably inflating how lopsided the deal is because Lopez and Salas must be high-variance numbers, due to injury / timeline from MLB, but it is still weird on paper. I thought the Twins would be sending a couple extra pieces to the Marlins when I first read the deal, not the other way around.

The other thing is while I'm sure Marlin fans are tired of the basement, you're setting up a competitive window now with Arraez for 2023-25? When the Mets Braves and Phils figure to be at their best right now? Maybe they are hoping to extend Arraez.

BTV is not infallible. Lopez being worth a lot more than Arraez is quite dubious - Arraez has a little higher WAR projection for next year and is a year behind in service.

Why would Miami want him to play 2B? Did I miss some news about JCJ?
I didn’t know when it was posted but Passan now reporting they’re moving JCJ to CF.

Arraez loses some value if he’s a 1B/DH. Looks like most prefer this for the Twins but I think Arraez is quite a valuable hitter in today’s game. He’s basically exactly Jeff McNeil, but five years younger and with even better contact rates and a higher batting average floor.

The Sox grabbing Yoshida is a nice step in this direction. But I’d have loved to grab Arraez too.

Moving your most talented / marketable player on the roster right now to a position with no prior experience is a move.
