I would’ve liked to see us get him at that price. I met him when he was a teenager and he was a big Sox fan. I wonder if we ever kicked the tires.
Seems a bit steep for a short-side of a platoon guy who doesn't even really mash lefties that hard (wRC+ 130 against lefties, 89 against righties last year). Refsnyder seems like a better candidate in house (177 against lefties, 125 against righties last year - even if these #s are almost certainly unsustainable). Refsynder put up 1.3 WAR in 177 PA last year, compared to 1.0 in 286 for Myers.

& Refsynder costs $1.2m & the Sox have him under control in '24, too...compared to $7.5m+ for Myers.

Weird fit there with three similar outfielders in Pederson, Yastrzemski and Wade, plus Haniger.
Maybe they can trade us Yaz on the cheap. Red Sox ticket and merchandise offices need all the help they can get

Pederson and Conforto starting for sure, Haniger should be starting as DH

So I guess it's a Wade/Yaz platoon for now?

Conforto put up 1.4 fWAR in '21 & didn't play in '22. Both the AAV & "marquee" label seem like a bit of a stretch, but short term contract so not a ton of risk obviously.

LOL wut? For consistent negative WAR? Absolutely amazing. At this rate, I could get signed.
Not sure if you're mixing up Taylor Rogers with Tyler Rogers (who was already on the Giants), but Taylor has been a pretty good reliever for most of his career, and he's never had negative fWAR. Although neither has Tyler, for that matter.

Edit: Guess I should say that I was looking at fWAR, not bWAR. Did not expect the difference to be that drastic, but bWAR isn't a big fan of Taylor in some seasons I guess...

Tough to platoon two lefties.

this Taylor Rogers? I'm from MN, so yea I watched him play for the Twins. he WAS good. He played last garbage last year.

Edit made, I was looking at Fangraphs, sometimes I forget there are competing WAR formulas. Also, I tend to be a bit more forgiving to relievers with good stuff who had a bad year, like that really ugly stretch from Hader last season. I think a reasonable philosophy is to accept that all relievers are volatile, but paying a bit for guys who have shown good stuff (and issues are more on command, not a cooked arm) gives you a higher ceiling if stars align.

The cost for major league production is as high as I can ever remember. A Moreno level prospect was once someone you’d use to net a top 20 player.

Now It gets you a good not great player who has one year of high quality play.

I can’t really can’t over that trade. Seems to indicate an enormous seller market.

It’s going to be very challenging to upgrade the roster via trade.

Alejandro Kirk might be part of the reason, but it seemed the Jays didn’t want him catching full time and a prospect like Moreno - you’d think - could get a lot more, but maybe they see a window and are just going all in.

I keep saying this, but the DBacks are going to be really good, really soon. Presumably this take the Jays out of the Reynolds market, also.

Arizona had a glut of young left handed hitting outfielders. Blue Jays had a glut of catchers as Kirk and Jansen, who I think took a step forward, are both good players. Balances out both rosters.

Wow, quite a trade.

I wonder if the D-Backs are about to deal Carson Kelly. Very good pitch framing, plate discipline and solid power. Two arb years left at pretty substantial money for a backup ($4.1M this year). They’ve got four catchers on the 40-man now.

I think they will certainly keep Kelly for this year and give Moreno a chance to acclimate to the majors. Next year will be a different question depending on how Moreno plays. They can afford to carry the payroll this year.

He's a very good defensive OF who can play 3 positions, has decent power and speed. They are valuing him correctly.
Maybe even more than very good; he led all OF in OAA and Success Rate % added this year, per statcast.

Maybe I am incorrectly assessing the value of Moreno.

But if the Red Sox moved Mayer in a similar deal I’d very much consider it a horrific judgement of resources.

As would I. But, Toronto is a bit more in GFIN mode, before their key guys start to hit FA. Vlad has three more years, I'd say that's their window.

Maybe this opens the floodgates on the trade market. Time to reshape this roster, Chaim.
Unless he’s suddenly willing to move Mayer and co…how? It doesn’t seem like the guys the Sox are looking to move are likely to bring back the type of players they need.

I think it is more like the cost for major league production from players with multiple years of control is what is especially high given the way FA contracts are spiking. Four years of control and not having to worry about a big contract extension is huge right now.

I think the Pirates will do very, very well with Reynolds. I'm curious how it goes for great players in their walk year, especially if Boston trades Devers.

Edit: If Varsho has another great year or maybe the next two, I suspect that Toronto will try to lock him up long term at a more reasonable price when he has two or more years of control left. Braves him.

If it's such a seller's market, what could Raffy fetch?
Don't give Bloom any ideas, he will approach Washington for a package of Jeter Downs, Thad Ward, and Erasmo Ramirez.

I fear that the Raffy trade market is not comparable because he will be so expensive in a year. A GFIN team like the Mets would have made sense before they got Correa. I think we'd be looking at slightly better package than Mookie because there is no David Price albatross stapled to Devers.

Pirates apparently are asking for Cortes plus prospects for Reynolds.

Screw that. I wouldn’t even consider Reynolds for Cortes even up.

Yeah, that's absurd. I mean I hope the Yankees do it, both cause it hurts them and cause it might boost the Devers market, but realistically, that's the Pirates significantly overplaying their hand. Nestor was the more valuable player this year.

Also it's a weird lateral move, as they're both signed through 2025. Are the Pirates planning to compete in that window or not?

They’re the pirates, don’t overthink it.

but yea, Cortes is nearly untouchable for what he brings to this team. He’s a glue piece.

NY isn't messing with that top four in the rotation, I can see them possibly moving Montas (only one year left) in the right deal but also they gave up a lot of depth for him last August, so that's not super likely either.

There were rumors that the A's were asking for multiple really good young major leaguers for Sean Murphy right up until the point they traded him for a package of prospects that didn't impress anyone. I don't put any stock in trade rumors that teams and agents have reason to float as negotiation or propaganda.
