Welp. Bridge season largely a success imo; made the playoffs, didn’t lose to Toronto, brought along a handful of younger players, and had some pretty exciting moments.

Definitely some changes coming, curious to see where things go. But I’m thinking the next few years should be a lot of fun.

Between here and everywhere.
Rumors out of Carolina that Martin Nečas wants to be traded somewhere he can be a #1 center.

I wonder if something centered around Ullmark gets it them talking.

Pasta and Zacha are headed back to Czechia to play for Czech in the IIHF championship.

Very tempted to make the drive if they advance out of the quarters.

a bridge to what, exactly? The younger players on the roster are largely low ceiling guys (Lohrei and maybe Poitras as exceptions but neither strike me as future elite contributors). The prospect pool is among the worst in the league and, again, devoid of guys with high ceilings. A lack of draft picks doesn’t help either. Marchand is probably going to enter a decline phase soon if he’s not already there.

I get that this year’s roster was cobbled together because of cap issues and they overachieved in a lot of ways but I don’t think the future is especially rosy. They have a very good but small nucleus (assuming Swayman is retained and maintains his level of play). The problem is there isn’t an obvious path to building out the rest of the roster in a manner which will make them an elite team.

Barring something unexpected, it feels like this was a bridge to a period where they will be pretty good but never great. Good enough to not have the high draft picks needed to try to land elite talent and a lot of salary cap space used on solid contributors but not stars.

perhaps it’s just me but the term “bridge year” implies elite prospects or a cadre of young players ready to take the team to the next level and elevate the team’s potential. I don’t see that at all with the current Bruins roster/organizational depth.

Listening to the Behind the B premiere as background noise at work. Neely calls Lindholm at some point to welcome him to the city etc, in the call Lindholm alludes to him joining the B's being 'meant to be' since the 2013 draft, Neely goes "oh ya, I remember"... I had never heard any smoke around that so took a look since it seemed like more than just a throwaway.

B's didn't have a pick til late 2nd round that draft (had dealt their first to Dallas for Jagr w/ the reach finals conditional) and the only moves they made that offseason were to sign Iginla to a 1 year deal, extend Bergeron who still had a year left, and sign Rask as an RFA.

Wonder if that means there was something explored with Carolina around Rask / 5 overall and Cam Ward, as Ward was well into his regression into below-average goaltending.

@Frisbetarian 10+ years is enough time eh? Anything you remember the team discussing around that draft? Apologies if that predates you, since it was still Chiarelli as GM (whom they extended for four years that winter, oof)

Marchand might’ve gotten banged up again. Not on the bench.

Update: he’s sick. Questionable to return.

Unfortunately, I didn’t start until the 2014-15 season, so I have nada for you. And most of my early work with the draft was looking at talent value vs market value (what you could receive in trade). What I found after looking at 15 years of drafts was there was a significant discrepancy between the perceived (market) value of draft picks and their actual (performance based) value. My conclusion was:

The first 5 picks in the draft (and especially the 1st 2) are gold. After 10, trading down for additional picks is almost always the right move statistically. It also makes sense to trade down for extra picks once you get past the ~100th pick. The difference between pick 100 and pick 210 is less than the difference between picks 1 and 3 in both the actual and market value systems. It is a crap shoot after the middle of the 4th round, and the more swings you have, the better your chance to hit.
If you remember the 2015 draft, they didn’t listen to me. Also, I doubt this is still true. We were a very early to utilize analytics in the NHL, and I’m sure most teams have realized this draft discrepancy by now.
