What happens if Tyler Johnson goes unclaimed? They can’t bury his cap hit in the minors anymore correct?

He stays on their cap or they can send him to the minors but that would only clear the league minimum off of their cap.

He gave them 7-8 teams to work with. Probably good ones with cap problems. Now he could be off to Ottawa or New Jersey.

I'm not sure what waivers mean in the NHL, but I will say this: at 30 years old this year, he play fell off a cliff and he was barely noticeable in the playoff run. After putting up 3 seasons in a row of production acceptable for his hefty contract (19 G-26 A (only 66 games); 21 G-29 A; and 29 G-18 A), he put in 14 G, 17 A this year in 65 games. Not terrible numbers in the abstract, but at $5M/year for the next 4 seasons, that's a bad contract that's likely to look worse over time.

Getting the goalie musical chairs out of the way early.

Can't decide if I like the no legal tampering period. It was kind of fun getting everything out of the way in like 2 hours today. Now we're in more of a slow burn.

Leafs would have to trade one of the big 4 to fit in Pietro.

Vegas would have to move a lot of money too but they're good at it. They've collected a bunch of $5 million players who are good enough to have value. They'll ship out Marchessault or something.

TJ Brodie signed for 5 years, $5 million AAV. Presumably takes the Leafs out of the Pietrangelo market.

Also, there might be some cap shenanigans going on with Detroit and Tampa with Tyler Johnson. Detroit has first priority. Some are wondering if they'll claim Johnson and then trade him back to Tampa with some money retained and then Tampa sends him somewhere else?

Good theory on the Tyler Johnson waiver situation - seems very much underhanded assuming he goes to Detroit and back to Tampa for a low-level asset with salary retained.

I recall a few CBAs ago there was discussion about restricting trading of waiver claims to avoid situations like this with teams that have cap availability essentially weaponizing their waiver position for profit. Can't blame Detroit for doing so if that's the case, but also good on the NHL for continuing to have maybe the worst cap setup of the major sports leagues.

Zadorov knew he was being traded but I have it on good authority that he was hoping it would be to Boston. It would have been fun (for me at least) to watch him in B's jersey but I haven't seen him play enough to know if it would have been a good fit.

Did he know he was getting eventually traded this off-season in general or just something in the last 48 hours?

Rumblings that the Jets will help them out of cap hell yet again (because why not I guess?) by swapping Roslovic for Nate Schmidt.
