MadBum actually made me like him a bit with that interview.
He's a man among boys.

The Cubs had better take care of business at home or else they get him in game 3............ and with their spectacular track record in the post season since 1908.................

The rest of the country thinks Belichick is a dick
Belichick is a dick, he is the best coach ever but it doesn't make him any less of a dick.
Based on that interview Bumgarner certainly feels like he could play for Belichick but he isn't on the same level of dickishness.

Why is BB a dick?

I really didn't think that was a controversial position. He is always a dick in press conferences and pretty much any interaction he has with the public.
I honestly couldn't care less and am happy to have him as the coach of the team I root for but I think he is generally a dick.

I understand where you're coming from. Where you see a dick, I see a man dedicated to doing his job, keeping his team incredibly focused, and not giving the hype machine built on BS any fodder for the week... which consequently takes heat off his players and keeps his team more focused. He gets this and many coaches don't. I don't think that makes him a dick but I see where others may view him differently.

If I'm a Cubs fan, I think the team I'm most worried about in a five game series just won. The Cubs should be favored against anyone, but SF has a staff that certainly could string together three shut down games.

As an aside, it seems really easy to be a dick nowadays. Like BB back in 1960 would've been revered for his no-nonsense approach, even with the media. Now, he's a dick. Media lazy.

Jon Miller's radio call on the home run was epic................as was the bozo who calls the Mets games, sounded like someone ran his dog over.

A customer of mine who's a Mets fan just send me a text wishing me luck vs the Indians and ended with "Our seasons over, but I still have 1986".........douchebags gonna douchebag.

And this is why I am going to enjoy tonight's result tremendously for the next day or so. Jets/Mets fans in some pain is a nice slice of schadenfreude.

You made me wish I'd heard Miller and they just played it on CSNBA! Little subdued for Jon, but then he lit it up with the adios pelota!

Madison Bumgarner became only player in postseason history with 2 shutouts in winner-take-all games. Also tied Glavine with most career postseason starts without allowing a run.

Just an absolute beast

Bochy said he was screaming at Parker to get out of there after the home run, afraid the ump would put him in as the pinch hitter and Bum would be out. Bochy does think of everything, or a lot.

Not to discount his accomplishments but there really needs to be a distinction between playoff eras. Ted Williams got to play in one postseason. How many would he have played in under the new rules?

Of course he is, I assume people saying these things aren't dumb enough to think this is some kind of vindication for Buck and are just joking. I know some are, others I'm not so sure.
I'll give you three guesses what Skip Bayless tweeted tonight.

Fair enough: the counting stats aren't very meaningful. Bumgarner also has the best road ERA (0.50) in postseason history though. He's an all time postseason legend already.

I would argue the fact that Bumgarner has done more in do or die games makes it more impressive. Yes, the sample sizes are better but just because Williams didn't play in more post-season games doesn't diminish what some of these guys are doing.

These playoff series are going to be very good. Toronto and Texas is teed up to be a contest given their history and hopefully Osuna is good to go. The Dodgers and Nats should be close and I think that SF and Chicago will be very good as well for the reasons cited upthread.

The only series I think may end quickly is the Sox/Indians one. Of course, that assumes Price pitches ok...

How is Bumgarner not the biggest star in baseball?
He's kind of a prick. (Or maybe just prickly.)

Of course, if he pitched for the team I rooted for, I'd love him to death. He's a fantastic pitcher.

He is an ornery douche who routinely tussles with guys like Puig by talking shit at them. But I love that stuff and he backs his shit up. He is a beast.
This sums it up just about perfectly for me.

As it relates to counting stats, there really is no comparison between eras. And the fact that some great players never really got an opportunity to showcase their skills in the postseason is on point - Williams can't be harshly judged for his stats in the only 7 game series he played, especially considering that he was injured.

However, none of that detracts from outstanding performances - especially pitching. I would argue that the era of expanded playoffs and relief specialization actually makes performances like what we have witnessed from Bumgarner more meaningful.

I'm not sure what excites me more as a potential WS matchup for the Sox, putting an end to this even year bullshit or pissing on the hopes and dreams of the Cubs fans.
I don't understand how a Sox fan couldn't at least want to see Theo win a pennant. If they're up against the Sox, I hope they fare worse than the 2007 Rockies, obviously, but you're really gonna root for the Dodgers or Natstown over a great story like the Cubs? They're the only franchise who could win the regular season by a mile and still be considered a lovable underdog in october.

Who is considering the Cubs an underdog any more? Many people are rooting for them, but very few think that they are still an underdog after the last two seasons they've had.

If the Cubs continue on their current trajectory and win the World Series just by virtue of being baseball's best team, it'll be so anticlimatic. Film makers are going to have to scratch their heads to come up with a compelling narrative for that one once the documentary gets past the Bartman incident.

Almost like the Red Sox after decades of championship drought finally putting 2 ace starting pitchers on the staff and winning the WS in short order.

Well if you leave out the part about coming back from down 3-0 against their most hated rival....

Hamels is not good enough. Things seem to be falling apart now, a run in for Toronto. Hamels made a mistake, in my opinion, trying to catch the comebacker from EE. Andrus could have gotten him at first to end the inning if Hamels had repressed his understandable reflex to make the play.

So, is this the Tor-Tex game thread?
Would it be out of line to start a gamethread for each series?

BTW, there is a thread for the TOR-TEX series in this forum.

I think it's better than megathreads and talking past each other as games keep moving forward
