OK, now that NY has clinched, let me take a quick crack at this. Keep in mind that this roster is just for the wild card game, and if they advance to the ALDS, they can change it accordingly:

Definitely on (19):

McCann
Bird
Ackley/Refsnyder
Gregorius
Headley
Gardner
Ellsbury
Beltran
A-Rod

Refsnyder/Ackley
Murphy
Young
Noel

Tanaka

Mitchell
Warren
Wilson
Betances
Miller

That leaves six spots, probably mostly pitchers, but so few good options. I wouldn't be surprised to see any of these guys make it or be left off:

Severino (3 days rest after starting tomorrow, but still)
Pazos
Shreve
Bailey
Rumbelow
Cotham
Sabathia
Nova (depending how he is used this weekend)
Pineda (same)

Other position players, maybe Heathcott? Eovaldi would be a great relief option, but I don't think there's almost any chance he'd be ready by Tuesday.

Who'd be the long man in the pen, in case Tanaka tweaks something?

Warren threw 51 pitches tonight and would be on full rest on Tuesday, he is probably the most likely option, but that is exactly why I would skip Severino tomorrow or let him throw 1-2 innings at most and treat it like a throw day (Girardi said after the game he will be starting tomorrow).

Also if the other team stacks their lineup with LHH against Tanaka, Sabathia would be an interesting emergency early inning option.

Yep, not available for the postseason. Not a huge deal for NY, but it would have been nice if they'd known this a few days ago and could have held back Severino.

I would be curious about whether Nova or Warren replaces CC against KC but that would involve making a major assumption that the Yanks beat Houston. It can wait.

Girardi says in his press conference this moment that CC came to him before Sunday's game. Joe is proud of his "inner strength."

CC went to Girardi and said he was going to rehab, I assume? That must have been one extremely difficult thing to do.

Here's the roster:

Catchers: Brian McCann, John Ryan Murphy, Gary Sanchez
Infielders: Greg Bird, Dustin Ackley, Rob Refsnyder, Didi Gregorius, Chase Headley, Brendan Ryan
Outfielders: Jacoby Ellsbury, Brett Gardner, Carlos Beltran, Chris Young, Rico Noel, Slade Heathcott
Designated hitter: Alex Rodriguez
Starter: Masahiro Tanaka
Bullpen: Andrew Miller, Dellin Betances, Justin Wilson, Adam Warren, Bryan Mitchell, James Pazos, Ivan Nova, Luis Severino

A third catcher makes sense given that Murphy is one of their better RH bats, but a little surprised it is Sanchez and not Romine who has actual experience catching in the bigs.

Looking at that roster makes me even less enamoured of this ridiculous one-game, made-for-TV stunt. Of course teams don't put any of their other starters on the roster and carry third catchers and pinch runners galore. That's the same for both teams, but isn't the way the regular season is competed. Another black eye as far as I'm concerned.

I wish Joe Maddon had to burn Arrirta and Lester, and carried 13 relief pitchers for game, and started going to match ups in the first inning, making a mockery of the game, lengthening it out to 5 hours for 9 innings and screwing with the TV execs. That would be the coolest ever.

You should probably have to keep the same roster from the play-in game to the Division Series. Doesn't really make sense that you can go with a huge bench.

That said, the final ~30 games of the regular season are played with 15 extra roster spots...so as long as the rules are the same for both teams it doesn't seem like a very big deal.

Agreed, it's absolutely ridiculous. I can't really get upset as a Yankee fan as they deserve nothing, but I really feel for the Pirates who will very likely be eliminated for the third straight year in this game, despite having the second best record in all of MLB.

I'd go further and rule that a single "post-season roster" be established at the end of regular play. The only change allowed would be a post-season DL that (like now) can only be factored after each series. I imagine one problem would be a team disabling it's RHH DH after a pennant series because the next opponent features RH pitchers.

And don't get us started on the September call-up rule.

Even better! New Rule: Each team gets to protect 20 players who participated in September. The post-season opponent then gets to pick 5 additional players form that same pool...meaning one of the 20 year old AA loogies called up in September to help rest the staff might be chosen to be on the World Series roster, or just stick with the 25 that got you through August, asshats.
