Well, somehow NY made 5 deadline trades and did not give up any of their top position player prospects, all of whom I think are very exciting:

Peraza
Volpe
Dominguez
Wells
Pereira
Florial
Sweeney
Cabrera

So really it's hard to complain, nice job Cashman. Severino to the 60 day IL when he didn't need it and then trading Montgomery is confusing though, but maybe the idea is that Bader is their 2023 CF.

If Bader's foot fully heals, which isn't always a given with that kind of injury, I'll be pretty OK with him in CF/LF regularly.

And Severino can complain all he wants, but even if he is only a little bit injured, some aggressive innings management is a damn good way to make sure he's got something left by the playoffs. He knows that.

Have there been any articles or commentary explaining why exactly we traded Montgomery?
I've heard Cashman's explanation which is basically that this is to help add a speedster world class defender in CF for the playoffs. Using that logic, Montgomery really had no role in October and so this was somewhat about improving the October roster. We don't need Monty for August and September, so I guess that's it.

Honestly the more I think about it, the more I think it is a vote of confidence in Clarke Schmidt. They have seemingly intentionally kept his innings down all season and I think he is going to get a chance now if he looks good while stretching out in AAA.

Also, related to this, Cashman is always looking ahead. For a couple of years, it has been obvious that there would be a bullpen issue in 2023 if it wasn't addressed, because all of Chapman, Britton, Green and Castro are FAs. Now Cashman has put an entire pen in place and can let all of those guys go. Similarly, there are rotation issues coming up, Taillon a FA after this year and Severino, Montas and Montgomery all after 2023. If they can get Schmidt in there, that fills one spot longer-term.

I have seen a lot of speculation that they had other deals in place that fell apart at the last minute and Cashman was caught doing the corresponding move first.
This is pure guesswork from people who don't understand the trade, which isn't to say it's wrong, but there is no evidence behind it.

It's also a continuation on his focus of improving the defense.

I’m guessing this was ultimately the price for moving on from Gallo. You need consistency in the playoffs and Gallo may be the least consistent regular in the past 29 years. They absolutely had to make a decision there.

Absolutely, in a different year, he could carry a team.

But over the past two years, he is more than likely, to hit .180 in the playoffs.

Saw a post on reddit from an Oakland fan that says Montas cannot travel to Toronto based on visa issues and has never been there in his career with the As.
I wonder if he has had a felony (like a DUI) in the past, because he's been having "visa issues" whenever they have to play in Canada since 2017.

July 2017:
Reliever Frankie Montas, however, was stuck in New York for the day because of visa trouble, leaving Oakland a player short for the first game of the series against the Blue Jays.

September 2021:
Starter Frankie Montas now will pitch Thursday instead of Sean Manaea, as Montas was dealing with some visa issues prior to the A's series in Canada against the Toronto Blue Jays.

April 2022:
Athletics RHP Frankie Montas did not accompany the team to Toronto because of a visa issue.

Yeah, something is going on there, I'm sure reporters will notice in the near future and investigate the specifics.

Is it possibly related to the PED suspension for use of Ostarine, which is illegal in Canada?

But the 2017 one predates that.

I don't think we need to guess, I think reporters will figure it out soon enough. I brought it up on Mike Axisa's Patreon page this AM, he was not aware before that.

Hey, finally something I can relate to in the Yankees forum. I'm suffering from plantar fasciitis right now. I'm older now but also had it in my 20s when I ran triathlons and was "in the best shape of my life". I could walk on it, painfully, but wasn't fully healed for months.

Bader and Cashman both seem to think he will be back to himself in Sept sometime, but I guess we'll see.

Clarke Schmidt really made Cashman's Montgomery/Bader move look good tonight, 18 up and 18 down in AAA against Worcester, 78 pitches, 11 Ks. German could be pitching not to get DFAd tomorrow.

I know Schmidt doesn't have a ton of innings up with the big club this year, but I can only remember one bad outing from him, and it was a while ago.

I'm not a fan of German at all, and I do hope he pitches well. But I won't be sad if Schmidt takes his spot. He's solid and (I think) dependable. I'd love to see if he can hold down a spot in the rotation. And if that doesn't work, I'll be happy if he's a multi-inning guy.

It's a perfect chance to give Schmidt at least a month to prove himself before Severino is hopefully back and before the offseason when Taillon's spot will open up. Everyone always says about guys being sent down, 'force your way back up' and holy shit is 6 0 0 0 0 11 on 78 pitches a statement. Cashman hates nothing more than giving away depth he doesn't absolutely need to but Domingo German has gotten more than enough chances. He will get at least one more tomorrow though.

The tricky thing is if they DFA German and put Schmidt in the rotation, they traded so many AAA SPs at the deadline (3 plus Medina in AA) that it's unclear who their next man up would be if someone gets hurt before Severino's 60 days are up in mid-Sept. Matt Krook maybe? Yoendrys Gomez is on the 40 man and needs innings, but he is in high A, heh. That is the only thing keeping German around, and maybe not that for much longer either.
