NY trade deadline 2020

Less than three weeks away in this incredibly strange season...

NY doesn't really have any massive holes to fill as of now, the rotation is settling into place (Cole, Tanaka, Paxton, Montgomery) with Schmidt ready to try to take Happ's 5th spot as soon as NY allows.

But I am still obsessed with a blockbuster of Gleyber for Lindor and Clevinger, and now that Clevinger has stupidly exposed Carrasco as well as the rest of his teammates, I have to think CLE might be a bit more open to this than they would have been last week, so I started the thread. As a framework to tweak, something like this roughly:

NY would get (Baseball Trade Values values in parentheses, then year they are controlled through):

Clevinger (50.4) (2022)
Lindor (45.2) (2021)

CLE would get:

Gleyber (87.1) (2024)
Clint (7.4) (2024)
Abreu (3.4) (2025 or 2026?)

That is slightly in favor of CLE according to those values, 97.90 to 95.60 but I would also allow CLE to choose from a list of prospects and add a fourth player.

This would allow NY to let all three of Paxton/Tanaka/Happ go if they want, and they should immediately try to lock up DJ to a 3 or 4 year deal. That would set up a potential 2021 team of:

LeMahieu 2B
Judge RF
Lindor SS
Stanton DH
Voit 1B
Hicks CF
Sanchez C
Urshela 3B
Tauchman LF

Cole
Clevinger
Severino
German
Montgomery

Schmidt

The last place that CLE and their fans want to see Lindor go next is the Bronx, but after one more season, they won't be able to stop him and four full seasons of a 23 year old Gleyber is an incredible return which might not still be there this winter (if it would even be there now, but it would if it was my call).

And in 2022, maybe Jasson Dominguez bumps Hicks out of CF, hopefully our civilization makes it that long...

I'm impressed, Jon. This isn't one of those "fanboy" deals that is constructed to give away your team's crap and get back the other team's studs. You'd be giving up a pretty frigging awesome piece in Torres, with that much control. And Clint and Abreu aren't mere throw-ins. I mean, compared to the three stars, yes, but they do have legit value.

Clevinger and Lindor are great, but they would cost the Yankees quite a bit of money shortly, something they obviously have more of than Cleveland. This would be a very interesting - and probably, when everything is taken into account, a fair deal.

I don't see it happening for a number of reasons (mainly because trade proposals made by fans, no matter how sensible, usually don't happen in the real world), but this is a very interesting and fair-minded trade idea.

I would be pretty flexible in adding pieces to Gleyber but Schmidt would probably not be available, as he is ready now or very soon and a trade like this would be made to maximize NY's window the next season or two. I would let CLE pick between a bunch of other potential studs though, but guys farther away like Roansy Contreras or Alex Vizcaino or Miguel Yajure. I might offer Gil or Medina or even Deivi (although I would prefer not to), but Schmidt I think they need to keep.

I don’t understand why Cleveland can’t find guys like Frazier in the draft...

Also, as a Sox fan, I hate this trade. You guys realize that, if the Yankees don’t make the WS this year, it would be the first decade (assuming we’re calling this the end of 2011-2020) that NY didn’t make the WS since acquiring Ruth? I’d like that streak to continue!

Yeah, they were shut out from 1911-20, too.

Lindor is a big defensive upgrade and only three years older, but also Clevinger would slot in as the #2 behind Cole right away, major immediate upgrade for NY with Severino out and Paxton still not close to himself. Also I believe this current minor league punishment might push back his FA another year, from post-2022 to post-2023, which counterbalances Clint's incredible first few games back.

One thing I learned/was reminded of today by the molten heat of The Yankee Bandana was that if your OPS is over 2.000, a single actually brings it down slightly, which happened in Clint's last AB. His three hits today were all hit so hard that the opposite field HR off Eovaldi's 98 actually had the lowest exit velocity of the three around 99.

The Indians have to be even more tempted by this hypothetical offer than a few days ago. As was alluded to above, Clint was a very prominent CLE draft pick originally, #5 overall in the first round in 2013 out of high school who came to NY in the Andrew Miller deal in 2016. He and Austin Meadows were from rival high schools in Loganville, GA (Loganville and Grayson) and Meadows went 9th in the first round. Meadows of course broke out big in 2019 after PIT got frustrated with him and handed him to TB, maybe here comes Clint too.

The money is a little hard to make work and stay under the highest tax boundary, but the way I think of it is that IMO Lindor will be in NY by 2022 with his best buddy Gio by his side and hopefully DJ at 2B and the sooner that happens, the better.

Also this supposedly locked in future NY international signee (yes it's gross to think about how young these kids are when they actually commit) is I think about 10 years younger than Lindor, so when Lindor is 31, Arias will be 21.

==============================================

Roderick Arias

Roderick is the best international shortstop prospect since Wander Franco. He is a switch hitting/ right handed throwing shortstop. His tools are so elite one scout told me they ” project him to be a Francisco Lindor or Prime Tulo, that’s the kind of player we’re talking about “. Roderick has 5 above average to plus tools with his best tool his arm which scouts rank as a 70 on the 20/80 scale. He has a 65 glove and hit tool. His power and run come in at a 55. Roderick grew up wanting to be better than his favorite player Jose Reyes. One scout told me ” it would not be suprising at all if Jasson Dominguez and Roderick Arias are 1 and 2 in all of baseball in prospect rankings”. Adding that ” any player besides getting Lindor, would only be keeping the shortstop position warm for Roderick”.

Unless this has changed, Arias is not even the next class but the one after that, which I guess is January 2022, bumped six months.

Twitter rumors about Clevinger and Lindor on the block. Abbey's dream has a chance.
I don't think so, because there is a sizable chance CLE and NY could meet in the first round, so no chance they will send Lindor to NY now.

Clevinger on his own is possible, it will cost NY a lot but they have a lot of excess to move too.

My nephew was hanging out with Starling Marte at a mutual friends house when he got traded to the Yankees with Jake Lamb. Nephew was a D-Backs minor league this past year. Said it was cool.

Wait, what? Are you saying this just happened but hasn’t been announced yet?

Lamb looks like he has been cooked (heh) for a few years, maybe a minor salary dump if he is included, a FA at the end of the season.

Marte is good but Hicks is supposedly not hurt, just left yesterday cramped up, so not sure how NY would utilize all those OFs, maybe they are trading Clint or Tauchman in another deal.

Marte
Hicks
Frazier
Tauchman
Gardner

They have DH also for someone, but Judge and Stanton should be back sometime also. Thankfully not my decision to make... :)

Yeah! Crazy! It was never a done deal after all and Marte ends up going to Miami. Watching the Mets/Marlins and Villar of the Marlins got pulled by Mattingly as he was getting ready to go hit. Never done I guess until the ink is dry.

MIA gave up a lot for him, don’t think Cashman would have gone close to that.
