It's still a relative statistic. If you're better than everyone else in the league, it's meaningful.
In theory, I agree. But I not sure it can be seen as an indicator of how he would do against better pitching.

The Astros are engaged with the Giants on Bumgarner. If the Yankees let the Astros grab another starter at the deadline I'm going to be pretty annoyed.

This has to be Giles, I think.

Yankees trade Joe Harvey for (bring me the head of) Alfredo Garcia, a 20 year old Rockies pitcher, presumably international money is in there too.

What is the fucking point of Frazier if it's not to get someone like Greinke? Why is he just sitting in the minors?

This is so irritating. Can't wait to watch Happ get shelled in the postseason.

According to Jon Heyman: regarding the Robbie Ray negotiations.

As per MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, the D’Backs wanted a four-prospect package that included Frazier and right-hander Clarke Schmidt, who was the 16th overall pick of the 2017 draft and rated by MLB Pipeline as the fifth-best prospect in New York’s system.
So, too much I guess? I'm thinking the other two prospects weren't slouches either.

The problem is who is 'someone like Greinke'? The actual Greinke had a no-trade clause to NY and it was reported he would definitely veto a deal here if asked. He wanted to stay in ARI, but HOU was not on his no-trade list.

I didn't realize Greinke would actually veto a trade. I'd assumed that, like many players who negotiate contracts nowadays, he had put New York and other perennial contenders on his No-Trade list in order to force extension negotiations on any potential trade candidate team. Maybe that's still true but I'd have to doubt it given the amount of money Arizona ate on this deal; Cashman probably could have ponied up another year or even two at $20M per if that were the case. As Fangraphs pointed out today, Greinke is aging well because of his curveball despite his fading fastball.

I trust in Cashman but I have to say this hurts. I still think the Yankees are the second best team in the AL but Houston has to be the clear first. Let's hope our starters (including Severino) can turn it on in the post-season where it's still true anything can happen in a short series, especially with the offensive firepower and bullpen that the Yankees have.

And signing Cole in the next offseason would definitely help towards making any lingering disappointment vanish. At this point, though, I wonder if he's going to command something like 8/$240.

In this case, I think he would have actually vetoed it and Cashman knew that and so didn't really go after him. This is said very explicitly in one of the deadline articles the last few days (I don't feel like looking it up, sorry).

Also, in the recent Bob Klapisch book, he got Cashman to talk pretty frankly about a bunch of things. Most of it I think was pretty innocuous, but he talked about a starting pitcher FA who they met with and who both sides knew it was a terrible match almost immediately. Pretty sure that was Greinke and if so, I'm sure he has seen the quote by now if there was any doubt before that.

This was a draining day for baseball and non-baseball reasons but before the Boston series, I will do a NY pitching depth chart. Loaisiga should be pretty much ready after two strong innings in AA the other night, maybe he will be the 26th man on Saturday.

Even if Greinke wasn't coming to New York, that doesn't change the fact that Cashman blinked on Ray, Bauer and Stroman.

Houston getting Greinke doesn't matter as much if the Yankees also add a starter.

That said, I think Cashman wasted an opportunity* to improve his team when Boston is down and the Astros are improving.

*-obviously Severino and Betances change this stance, but no one knows what will happen with them.

Each of those is different, you can't force a team to make a deal with you. Jim Duquette said the Yankees thought they offered more than the Mets for Stroman, not sure what TOR was doing there especially since Kay has been awful since going to AAA. I have said since the winter that if CLE moved Bauer it would be to the NL if at all possible (why would they send him to a possible playoff foe if there was any alternative?) and ARI wanted Frazier, Clarke Schmidt plus two more genuine prospects for a year and two months of Ray. You can't fully judge the Ray one without knowing all four guys they wanted, but it sure seems like a ton.

It's really been a perfect storm of bad luck much more than bad decisions for NY in the SP department:

Over the winter, they trade/pass on Sonny Gray and Lance Lynn from last year's team, both of whom are awesome this year (Gray almost certainly wouldn't have been if he was still here, but Lynn might have been).
They trade for Paxton and sign Happ and CC, all of which seem like solid decisions, all of whom are performing well below expected.
Severino, their #1 guy coming to spring training, has been out the entire season.
Loaisiga and King, their 7th and 8th guys coming to spring training, have been hurt most of the season.

So it took all of that to put them in the position they are now, when not many impact guys are genuinely available and even fewer potentially to the Yankees.

The guy I'd like to ask Cashman about whether they were on is Zac Gallen, but maybe Miami with the Jeter strangeness is another team who would prefer not to deal with NY. I think NY could have beaten ARI's offer there, maybe a similar level player to Chisholm in Florial plus a couple of genuine pitching prospects.

I just can't bring myself to be disappointed that Cashman didn't overpay for Ray or Stroman. I still don't think either of them would change the Yankees' postseason prospects very much.

Corbin has a 143 ERA+ this season. It was and remains a tough call, but at 6 years/140 versus Greinke plus a ton of big propsects that deal looks pretty outstanding right now.

Were the Yankees not offering Andujar along with other pieces? I wonder.

NY was happy to give Corbin 4 years or possibly 5, we won't be able to judge that one for at least a few years.

What's up with our 40-man roster, btw? If Jon Abbey could provide some info that would be awesome, but I suspect it's not going to be what I want to hear.

Heh, I already bumped that thread and updated it, but the short version is Loaisiga can go on now because they are at 39 after trading Harvey, and then one of Betances/Severino can bump Camarena, who is no loss. After that, it gets trickier if no one else goes on the 60 day IL but they do have two moves to go before then at least.

I wanted to revisit this a bit a month later and your comment is the perfect launching point, sorry for the belated bump...

So Bauer has been absolutely awful since being traded (somehow a 8.40 ERA after 4 in the first again tonight), Ray has been OK (18 innings in 4 starts, a 3.50 ERA and a brief 10 day IL stint where he left a game early and missed the next start), Stroman has been mediocre at best (4.91 ERA in 5 starts). All three of those guys are FAs after 2020 and would not be locks for NY's four man postseason rotation if healthy (Tanaka/Paxton/German/Severino), Cashman looks good on all three non-moves right now, especially with the way the minor league pitching has blossomed this month. Also I said from the start that CLE was sending Bauer to the NL and I am sure there was a 'fuck the Yankees' component to Brodie's Stroman sales pitch, but neither of those look like losses currently.

Like I said somewhere else way after the fact, Ivan Nova was maybe the move, not that anyone even seemed to consider it at the time. Nova just had a seven game stretch where he averaged almost seven innings (48 total) with a 0.93 ERA and he presumably wouldn't have cost almost any talent plus he has already pitched in NY, but that stretch started in very late July and he had a 5.86 ERA in over 100 innings before that, which is why not only nobody rumored it at the deadline, but still no one is even second guessing it as a non-move (how rare is that these days?). Also if Cashman knew Zac Gallen was available, it seems like he would have been someone to push after hard but also Miami might have just fallen in love with Jazz Chisholm. Does Florial and Clarke Schmidt or Roansy Contreras top that? I hope someone asks Cashman about Nova and Gallen at the deadline at some point, maybe in the offseason.

Maybe The Yankees did dodge a bullet or two, but maybe they didn't. Bauer or Stroman might be more motivated if they were in the Bronx. Maybe if Houston got Greinke earlier, that may have prompted them to make a trade.

I don't really think either of those two was possible for NYY without a massive massive overpay, as I said, because CLE and TOR did not want to give Cashman the guy he was looking for, and in turn, Cashman did not want to give someone to TOR who would haunt him for the next six years (Clint or possibly Deivi).

I do think it's possible as you say if the Greinke deal happens a few days earlier, maybe Cashman does pull the trigger on someone, but I don't think it would have been one of these guys anyway.

Matthew Boyd has also been quite bad for a full half season now, 5.95 ERA in 16 starts since June 1. DET may have missed the boat on moving him too, just like they did with Fulmer.

Nah. Pinstripe pixie dust only works on young no-name players. Anyone with hype behind them would have had an even greater chance to be Pavano'd.

Heh, the pixie dust is only for position players, when was the last pitcher who failed elsewhere and blossomed here? Brandon McCarthy? I know people are still traumatized about Aaron Small, but that was 14 seasons ago now.

If anything, NY has had reverse pixie dust with pitchers recently, Sonny Gray and Lance Lynn both turned into Cy Young candidates the second they left.
