This sort of thing terrifies me.

Here's hoping Tanaka is okay. But yeah - I still hope he gets absolutely fucking shelled this season.

Stanton is definitely an embedded spy. He has done nothing good for the Yankees. And plenty bad.
He carried NY for a while in 2018 when they had tons of guys out, he had a .923 OPS and 28 HRs in 104 games between May 2-Aug 30.

Yes, he sucked for that handful of games, that wasn't what you said.
Having a decent regular season, only to shit all over yourself in the playoffs and almost singlehandedly causing the team to lose isn't helping. Missing almost an entire season while getting paid 26 million dollars to do so is definitely not helping. And, finally, attempted manslaughter against one of the best pitchers on the team is probably not helping, either.

I stand by my comments. Although the attempted manslaughter isn't his fault. But, in a way, it is.

Eh, I was going to answer with specifics, but what's the point? Your initial comments were wrong, just say he's been a major disappointment so far because obviously he has. You don't always have to take the most extreme viewpoint, Mad Dog.

Can you not see I’m being a little tongue in cheek here? Jeez.

Why wasn’t he behind a BP screen? That sucks, hate to see it for anyone. Hopefully he doesn’t go Bryce Florie on you guys.
They give pitchers the option and he didn't want one. He seems to be (relatively) OK, but we'll see.

FWIW, both of those tests were at home before they came to NYC, Cessa has some mild symptoms but DJ is asymptomatic. They have to pass some tests before they can travel to NYC, and then more tests once they get here before they're allowed to join the team.

The line drive that hit Tanaka had an exit velocity of 112 mph. He was back in camp today. Very, very lucky.
My oldest son only pitched through high school. I was very glad he ended his career unscathed. Part of it was that he had great mechanics and always ended in perfect fielding position. But frankly, he got lucky. Nobody ever hit a bullet like that right at him. And by the time he was a senior, there were some guys who went on to D1 ball that he pitched against who hit absolute cannons. Just never at him. When his playing career was over I was sad, but also exhaled.

60'6" is not that far away when a ball is coming at you that fast. Scary stuff. Glad Tanaka is ok. Yikes.

NY has moved today's and tomorrow's workouts to evening to avoid the heat a bit and to get some practice under the lights. Both days will feature televised two hour intrasquad games on YES, tonight is Happ vs Clarke Schmidt and tomorrow Cole will start for one side.

Tarp on the field! It looks like it'll pass through by 6 or 7, but I guess we'll see.

Tarp is off the field and it looks like they'll be starting around 7 as scheduled, I have to confess I'm somewhat irrationally psyched.

One funny thing about the lineups below is that there are two DHs for the 'Bombers', which is evidently not a mistake because it is an unofficial game, they will put someone else out there to play LF defensively. Of course, the obvious question is 'uh, so Clint Frazier can't even play LF in a scrimmage?'

Also that's a nice challenge for Clarke Schmidt, rooting for that kid.

Dunno, but you’re not missing much. They’re playing without LFs and CFs and not everyone is running the bases. Schmidt looked impressive in the 1st though.

Voit looking skinny, they said he lost 13-15 pounds in quarantine, a lot of cardio.

Pitchers look way way ahead of the hitters, now there is only one fielder with Ottavino on the mound, Granite in RF.

I had to block that guy (Jared C) on Twitter for being too stupid, I actually think Stanton was the only other guy who hit a ball hard in that whole thing besides Estrada, a bullet to the right-center gap (I'm not positive it was Stanton, to be fair).

Yeah, it was a televised practice but with many of the best guys playing.

Cole vs Michael King tomorrow, same YEStime, same YESchannel.

Carrabis sucks out loud. He's the Barstool Sports "baseball guy" and he's legitimately terrible.

Solid Jomboy breakdown on this. Cole wanted the previous ball he was throwing this AB, but wasn’t allowed to use it, too many people had touched it, so COVID precaution. Cole asked for and was denied a different new ball, didn’t like something about the ball. Maybe seams, personally guessing? Very next pitch, and the first with the new ball, is the one Andujar went deep with.

Noticed this in Houston too, Cole is really picky about what baseballs he pitches, much moreso than any other pitcher I’ve seen. More power to him for doing so, but it’s an interesting behavior in its psychology, personally.

Yeah, he's going to have to get past that this year.

To be fair, that was the only hit he allowed in 5 innings/67 pitches and it looked like he made the pitch he wanted, a FB away. Andujar just managed to muscle it out to RF because he is a beast. Cole was mildly pissed about 'losing' afterward, pretty funny. If he stays healthy and they actually keep playing baseball year after year, he is going to rocket up the list of my alltime NY SP faves, no Clemens reference intended.

I think maybe because they do not want to show opposing scouts too much (?), YES seems to rarely be using the normal center field camera angle, so it is hard to totally appreciate the pitching in these scrimmages and there has been very little hard contact that I've seen in any of the three. So the entertainment level for me has been minimal.

But our boy Thairo pulled another HR into the LF stands today, this one off Tyler Lyons. Also Andujar played RF for maybe the first time ever and the sun field in Yankee Stadium for a 6 PM start was not ideal conditions for that, heh. He lost one in front of him in the sun, he pulled up short going to the side wall and dropped another, he looked Clint-esque. He looked good in LF in limited time in March, keep him there and DH and maybe 1B occasionally.

Two weeks to go and LeMahieu is not in camp yet, Wade will probably get the nod there if DJ is not ready but maybe Thairo can push himself into the picture, especially since Wade would be a great weapon pinch-running late. The current lineup without DJ:

Hicks CF
Judge RF
Torres SS
Stanton DH
Sanchez C
Voit 1B
Tauchman/Gardner/Andujar LF
Urshela 3B
Wade 2B

WIth DJ at the top of that eventually bumping everyone else down one, if they can actually get all of those guys to the same game and healthy, yowza.

Aroldis Chapman just tested positive, not great since he was already in camp.
