NY signs Brian McCann to a 5/$85M deal

How much of a subsidy? Is he worth 14m per year? The general opinion seems to be that it's only a matter of time before he starts hitting, so that should be a factor in determining his worth. As Pendelton stated "he's not a .220 hitter." 

If he's healthy, I think they could give him away after next season for a $4mm per year subsidy -- someone would take on 3/39 or thereabouts for the age 33-35 seasons of an elite defensive catcher. Given the MFY's vast resources, however, they might prefer to swap McCann for a similarly overpaid player at a position of need.

Obviously, all bets are off if he breaks down physically. That's the real risk of this contract; his subpar season makes it less likely the MFY could find someone to gamble on a bounce-back if McCann were to get hurt and the club decided to move on.

Gary Sanchez has a 115 wRC+ and .161 ISO in AA this year. That's fine for a catcher but his bat isn't going to play anywhere else. I'd guess he's at least 2 seasons away, just to work on his defense.
