With the news today that Montas will likely be out most or all of the season, let's take a look at where the NY rotation stands:

Cole
Rodon
Severino
Cortes (maybe not quite ready to start the season, unclear currently)
(Montas)
German

Schmidt

Then they have Brito, Krook (if they keep him stretched out), Vazquez, Ryan Weber, Gil (back midseason), Deivi Garcia (theoretically anyway, he has been awful the past two years but still on the 40 man), Will Warren, Yoendrys Gomez, Clayton Beeter. I'll bump this thread once the minor league seasons start and it becomes more clear who is in each minor league rotation, then we'll have a much better idea of the pecking order.

I'm wondering if this increases the odds of a Torres trade, if two of LeMaheiu, Peraza and Cabrera begin the season playing well, maybe to Brewers?

I think they've been trying to trade an infielder or two for what they consider good value all winter, I don't think it's connected to the rotation depth.

OK, with the minor league starting, I like to write out all of the NY affiliate rotations to get a better idea of their SP depth and/or lack thereof:

MLB: Cole, Cortes, German, Schmidt, Brito (Rodon, Severino, Montas)

AAA: *Vazquez, Weber, Spence, Boyle (Gil)

AA: *Fitts, *Warren, *Beeter, Caetano, Abeyta (*Gomez, Sauer)

high A: Messinger, Carela, *Thorpe, Yulie (*Vrieling, Beck)

low A: *Selvidge, *Hermann, Lange

I'm sure that's not close to right, mostly taken from Roster Resource, I will update and fix as teams go through their rotations for the first time.

Brito is very similar to German, right? Although he seems mostly fast ball/killer change. Domingo has a wider repertoire. It will be interesting to see how hitters adjust to Brito, and he to them.

Severino with his second rehab start tonight, this one in AA. He is out now and it didn't go great, 3.1 6 2 2 1 3 on 58 pitches and a runner on that is still his responsibility. I think it's still possible NY brings him back to start on Sunday but he could get another rehab start also.

Chase Hampton promoted to AA, a 2022 6th round pick who has looked dominant in high A this year (77 Ks in 47 innings) and is now one of NY's top pitching prospects. The AA Somerset rotation is loaded now, Yoendrys Gomez (finally healthy again), Clayton Beeter, Richard Fitts, and Hampton, all legit prospects.

https://www.amny.com/sports/yankees-pitcher-chase-hampton-emerging/

Hampton is second in the entire minor leagues in K-BB%, 32.1%, behind only Andrew Abbott, recently called up by the Reds.

NY's projected 2-5 starters in spring training have only started 16 games combined so far, out of 55 they would have started if healthy the whole season.

Rodon (0)
Cortes (11)
Severino (5)
Montas (0)

OK, I should do the minor league rotations, for my own reference if nothing else. From NY on down, *s are prospects, parentheses are on the IL:

Cole
(Rodon)
(Cortes)
Severino
(Montas)

German
Schmidt

AAA: *Randy Vasquez, *Jhony Brito, *Will Warren, *Clayton Beeter, Tanner Tully, Mitch Spence

AA: *Richard Fitts, *Yoendrys Gomez, *Chase Hampton, Blaine Abeyta, Matt Sauer, (Gray Fenter)

high A: *Drew Thorpe, *Brock Selvidge, *Juan Carela, *Zach Messinger, Tyrone Yulie, Joel Valdez

low A: *Justin Lange, *Sean Hermann, Yorlin Calderon, Hayden Merda

I'm being a bit generous with the stars, but NY has a lot of SPs doing very well so far. That AA rotation especially is exciting, all four of those starred guys are very promising.

Clayton Beeter promoted to AAA, well deserved. He is the guy they got from the Dodgers last deadline for Joey Gallo, he is leading the AA Eastern League in ERA at 2.08.

Beeter is climbing up the ranks of potential rotation options, 7th or 8th right now behind Brito/Vasquez and maybe Will Warren, who has struggled since being promoted a few weeks ago.

There have been some promotions, so let's do an update here:

Cole
Cortes
Schmidt
Vasquez (presumably promoted and starting tomorrow night)
Severino or Brito

IL/restricted: Rodon, Montas, German

AAA: *Will Warren, *Clayton Beeter, Edgar Barclay, Mitch Spence

AA: *Richard Fitts, *Yoendrys Gomez, *Chase Hampton, *Drew Thorpe, Gray Fenter, Blaine Abeyta, Matt Sauer

high A: *Brock Selvidge, *Brendan Beck, *Zach Messinger, Tyrone Yulie, *Sean Hermann, Joel Valdez

low A: *Justin Lange, Yorlin Calderon, Osiel Rodriguez, Cam Schlittler, Hayden Merda

I'll keep an eye on the rotations through the weekend and update if they're different, but that AA rotation looks very crowded. Fitts has been the best pitcher in the league this season, maybe he will get the bump to join his former Somerset teammates Warren and Beeter in AAA, all three started the year in AA.

With guys like Hampton and Thorpe and Selvidge all developing nicely and not needed to be protected on the 40 man for a few years, Cashman has done a very solid job restocking the SPs in the system after trading away so many at the 2022 deadline.
