Vasquez ran out of steam in the 5th but looked good before that, NY's SP depth is back to 'existing'. Even with all their injuries, they were very lucky to not have to dig even deeper into their SP depth until Severino was back, because they really didn't have any. Now they have Brito and Vasquez in AAA.

Vasquez is back in AAA because they only needed him for one start, up today is lefty Matt Krook making his MLB debut (in the bullpen). He does not throw hard but has insane movement on his pitches, his issue is throwing strikes because his ball moves so much.

Josh Donaldson with a big day in AAA, 2-3 with a double and HR and two walks. I think they were going to wait to activate him until maybe Tuesday, but now they might want to give Rizzo a day tomorrow, put DJ at 1st and dump Bauers, who is 1-22 over the past two weeks.

Washington
They might as well. He isn't going to do worse than the current bottom of the order. Probably better. Maybe even a lot better. And of course the defense he brings to the table is always appreciated.

The fact that I'm looking forward to JD coming back makes me a little sad.

Yes and yes, but FYI they have already said he will play 3B every day when he comes back, presumably if he is terrible at the plate again, he will be DFAd a la Hicks.

NY should be getting back a lot of guys soon:

Trevino-Tuesday (Rortvedt to AAA)
Donaldson-very soon (Bauers DFAd?)
Kahnle-Thursday? (Krook to AAA?) (40 man spot via Bauers or Calhoun)
Stanton-maybe this weekend? (Calhoun DFAd)

Rodon is throwing a bullpen in SEA today too, he really is the key to their season.

Generally when Stanton comes back midseason, he sucks for a while. Let’s hope that’s not the case this time.

Pretty sure NY needs to make a 40 man move to bring back Kahnle from the 60 day, maybe Franchy again?

Rodon to the 60 day IL, retroactive so it changes nothing and they don’t lose anyone.

Mike Axisa with a very good point in his subscriber newsletter today:

===========

DJ LeMahieu after a day off: .327/.407/.481 in 59 PA

DJ LeMahieu all other days: .217/.268/.365 in 149 PA

A day off in this case means a team off-day or a day LeMahieu was on the bench.

===========

So DJ should probably be a 3-4 games a week guy for now, backing up Donaldson/Gleyber/Rizzo/Stanton at 3B/2B/1B/DH.

Aaron Judge was the 32nd pick in the 1st round of the 2013 draft, he was in college and had turned 21 two months before, so is now 31. He has a 1.078 OPS this year in 213 PAs.

Billy McKinney was the 24th pick in the first round of the same draft, taken out of high school and was still 18, so is now 28 (28 months younger than Judge). He has a .950 OPS this year in 55 PAs filling in for Judge.

Leaving aside any discussion of the disgustingness of the Cordero suspension (there is a separate thread for that), the timing actually helps NY. NY needed to drop a reliever today to activate Vasquez, that would have probably been Nick Ramirez (pitching much better than Cordero) and he wouldn't have been able to come back for 15 days, plus they needed a 40 man spot for Rodon on Friday. Now Vasquez takes Cordero's spot today, then Vasquez goes back down and Rodon gets activated for his Friday start.

Severino got absolutely mauled again today: 2.2 ip, 10 h, 7 r, 7 er, 1 bb, 3 k

Severino's first 2 games: 11.1 ip, 5 h, 3 r, 2 er, 4 bb, 10 k, 1.59 era, 0.79 whip, 7.9 k/9
Severino's last 7 games: 31.1 ip, 53 h, 37 r, 33 er, 15 bb, 27 k, 9.48 era, 2.17 whip, 7.8 k/9

He's only had one good game in his last 7. Absolute disaster out there for NY.

And much like Burnett, Severino will presumably sign somewhere else next year and somehow be good again.

Seems for every time that happens to a NY pitcher... they also land some Aaron Smalls or Shawn Chacon(?) type that can't lose for them despite a prior history (and post-NYY time) as being horrible.

To Yankees fans more in the know...what are your impressions on a Judge ETA? I know it seems very up-in-the-air, but not sure if you have more of a read on it following them daily. Seems early August best case? Think there's a possibility of no return this season?

He is running in the OF and taking BP now, he looks great from the clips I've seen. Past that, no idea.

Yeah, I have been picturing the whole hand just barely attached.

Trevino truly seems like a fantastic guy but he cannot hit at all and Rortvedt deserves a chance, so hopefully he will get lots of ABs. Rortvedt could easily be the best of those three catchers, plus he hits lefty.

And Austin Wells finally promoted to AAA, both positive moves. I'm guessing Trevino is actually hurt, but either way him going on the IL helps NY fix their C depth chart some.

Trevino is out for the season, his wrist has evidently been hurting for a while. This helps NY sort out their catching logjam a bit:

MLB: Rortvedt, Higgy

AAA:

Austin Wells (promoted today, hitting cleanup tonight, former #1 pick and one of NY's top prospects)
Carlos Narvaez (spent 2022 in high A but worked a lot with the MLB team in spring training and was quickly promoted to AAA in early May, he has a .875 OPS there)

Then in AA they still have Breaux and Siegler, and in high A they have Agustin Ramirez, who was just promoted three weeks ago but has a 1.200 OPS in 65 PAs since and is solid defensively.

Many of these guys are rule 5 eligible, so NY needs to sort out what they have a bit better before then.

Jake Bauers is demolishing in his 3 game AAA rehab stint: 7-9 with 2 doubles and 2 HRs, a BB and a SB. Unfortunately he is the worst of all of NY's OF options defensively, he should play 1B or DH if at all possible. Since Greg Allen is an actual defensive OF, I might make an argument to give Rizzo a 10 day IL stint to try to figure his shit out full-time, and activate both Bauers and Allen, Bauers gets time at 1B/DH and Allen in LF/CF.

Heh, I had to figure out what that three game Bauers stretch translates to:

.778/.800/1.666, a 2.466 OPS

Bauers and Allen both back, Bauers leading off today. Cabrera and Franchy both back to AAA, Cashman manages to not DFA someone again.

Willie Calhoun DFAd, so that’s one bad defensive mediocre hitting OF on the 40 man gone, a few more to go still.
