Happ they could definitely use, Contreras seems like he’ll cost too much for half a season of offensive upgrade and possible defensive downgrade and Robertson left NY on not great terms.

I’d like to see NY trade Luetge and give Shane Greene (in Scranton now) a shot, they need a one inning potential late game guy with Loaisiga and Green and Chapman all gone and Greene is very experienced doing that.

He's not even on the 40 man, to be clear, some AAA depth like Inciarte and Dietrich and Ronald Guzman.

He's not even crushing in AAA when he has been there, he has turned himself into an adequate defensive LF at best. I get his frustration but he hasn't hit enough for anyone to care about in years.

Andujar took a few days to report to AAA but showed up yesterday and has been doing as I suggested (heh) in hitting better, 2-5 with a HR and 2 RBIs tonight. Still a bad night for him comparatively though, with all three of his OF competitors having even better games:

Florial (AAA): 3-4 with a HR, 2 BBs and 5 RBIs.

Gallo: 2-5 with 2 HRs and 3 RBIs.

Hicks: 2-5 with a HR and a big RBI single, 3 RBIs. For the series, 6-11 with 2 BBs and a HR.

NY claimed old buddy Albert Abreu (who they traded to TEX in April for Jose Trevino). They DFAd McKay for a 40 man spot but Abreu is out of options and I think needs to go on the 26 man at least briefly, before they presumably try to sneak him back to AAA. They could maybe send down Marinaccio/activate Abreu and then activate one of the injured relievers/DFA Abreu.

Sears coming up for a spot start tomorrow, my guess is they DFA Abreu and try to get him off the 40 man and back to AAA since he's already been waived twice (by TEX and KC) this season. Then Wednesday they send Sears back and activate Chapman.

Oh, I forgot about Domingo German, he should be ready or close and will slot in there nicely.

I don't know what it is going to take to get more ABs for Carpenter, especially against righties. He is actually hitting lefties even better so far in his minimal ABs with NY, but he is a righty killer.

Anyway his numbers so far are insane no matter the split you look at, 8 HRs in 41 ABs, a 1.322 OPS in 51 PAs. He has an OPS+ of 269. Maybe find some ABs for him a bit more often? Maybe? Possibly? K thx.

Pitching moves coming before today's game, Sears already sent down and Severino likely to go on the IL regardless of the results of his MRI, Loaisiga is probably being activated and Ryan Weber is in the clubhouse (would need a 40 man move) so maybe it will be him and then when Severino's turn comes up again, they will DFA Weber for a third time and activate German or bring up Schmidt.

Miguel Andujar was in the AAA lineup and then pulled, not worth noting at most times of the year but it’s trade season.

Doesn't Cashman have a tendency to make a move or two before it gets too close to the deadline? Or am I thinking of someone else?

Sometimes yes, the Robertson/Kahnle deal in 2017 was July 19, last year's Clay Holmes deal was July 26, the Encarnacion acquistion in 2019 was June 15. The fact that I came up with all three of those in about a minute shows me that I might be paying too much attention to all this. :)

Also the draft is now later in the season, which means that front offices can’t fully focus on trade needs until after it’s done next Tuesday (the 19th).

Still more moves to come, but I think Effross may mark the end of Domingo German in NY, after tonight that is. Schmidt and/or Sears can cover the 5th spot until Severino is back, and that's if they don't trade for another SP. German has an option left but really he'd be better off getting a fresh start somewhere else.

I think NY has a full pitching staff now for 2023, even with a bunch of FAs. Year they are controlled through in parentheses:

Cole (2028)
Montas (2023)
Severino (2023) (has a team option for 2023)
Cortes (2025)
Montgomery (2023)

Schmidt (2026)
Luetge (2024)
Peralta (2023)
Trivino (2024)
Loaisiga (2024)
Effross (2027)
Marinaccio (2027?)
Holmes (2024)

Edit: And Michael King if he doesn't need TJS (not clear yet), he is controlled through 2025.

Perhaps, they also may have been underselling his injury so people didn't get the idea they were more desperate at the deadlne
He supposedly threw yesterday and felt good, unless that was a complete lie (possible, I guess).

On paper, I love NY's potential end of season roster, pretty different from the current one. My guess at their best possible end of season roster, starred players are currently not active, on the IL or in AAA, but are currently expected back by mid-Sept or earlier (even Carpenter, although that is optimistic).

Rotation: Cole, Montas, Cortes, *Severino
Bullpen: *Schmidt, *Marinaccio, Trevino, Effross, Loaisiga, *Britton, Peralta, Chapman, Holmes (Luetge/Abreu/Taillon all left off)

LeMahieu 3B
Judge RF
Rizzo 1B
*Stanton LF
*Carpenter DH
Torres 2B
*Bader CF
Trevino C
IKF/*Peraza SS

Bench: Benintendi or Hicks, Donaldson, IKF or Marwin, Higashioka

If Carpenter is not back, then Donaldson can play 3B and DJ can DH and maybe Locastro as a pinch runner.

So 14 pitchers and 9 lineup spots and Cashman is hoping for 7 internal upgrades on those 23, 8 if they give Peraza a shot. That is a very different team from the one we have been watching suck recently.

Cabrera and Florial are up apparently.

Edit: Didn't realized it was sourced and being discussed in the game thread.

Volpe hitting .500 early on in AAA, 8 for 16. He doesn’t have to be on the 40 man until after 2023, but I’d say the chances of him being in NY this year have gone from 0 to maybe 2 percent.

Heh, dunno if Rortvedt is my boy but it’ll be good to see him get a few ABs. He was out most of the season and came back in mid-July, he has a .930 OPS in Sept in 25 PAs.

Now if Stephen Ridings actually makes it back, that’s my boy.

There seem to be a bunch of topics that baseball reporters have just decided to never ask press conference questions about, all of the international draft related ones for instance.

"Brian, would you agree that there is a connection between your approach to stay under the third tax line and your recent string of star international signings in Dominguez and Arias and Mayea?"

Another one is what exactly are Aaron Boone's current duties, I don't think he has much to do with lineups or pitching changes anymore. This would be trickier, maybe:

"Aaron, some of the lineups we've seen in recent weeks, even with so many guys out, seem like they came from a machine more than a human being. Any comment on that?"

In related news, my career as a beat columnist would likely not last very long.
