So let's do an update of where this team stands, current 25 man roster:

================

Sanchez
Voit
Torres
Didi
Urshela
Gardner
Hicks
Maybin
Encarnacion

bench: LeMahieu, Tauchman, Romine

Paxton
Tanaka
Happ
Sabathia

Cortes Jr.
Hale
Cessa
Green
Holder
Kahnle
Ottavino
Britton
Chapman

================

Stanton back on Tuesday will likely bump Tauchman to AAA, then Judge soon after will maybe bump a pitcher (please Cessa please Cessa please Cessa), allowing Maybin who has no options to stick around for now.

I think Cashman has more trades coming soon, he badly needs a reliable SP and needs to move some depth. The AAA team is brimming with guys who deserve big league jobs somewhere (Frazier, Estrada, Mike Ford, Logan Morrison, Tyler Wade has been hot lately).
You have to get LeMathieu in most days, don’t you? The guy’s had an amazing season and been extra hot lately.

Yep, that was a week ago, LeMahieu is the everyday leadoff hitter now even with everyone back, playing 3B mostly but also 2B when Didi or Gleyber sit and 1B occasionally (tonight).

Kendrys Morales, who was on the DL, is DFAd, which frees up a 40 man spot. Holder down, Tarpley up.

Stanton back to the IL with a PCL strain, reevaluated in 10 days. Tauchman replaces him, Estrada also added to the roster as the 26th man they're allowed in London, Higashioka and Adams also coming along as emergency replacements.

Who needs Stanton when DJ is hitting bombs every day?

It's true that they obviously don't think they need more offense currently as witnessed by leaving Clint Frazier and his .843 OPS in AAA in favor of Tauchman's much more reliable defense.

I guess if a London team ever happened teams would need to bring extra players.

Clint played CF last night in AAA, he will get a bunch of games in before NY is back in the US, so I think he has a chance if he plays well to flip with Tauchman after London.

DJ is 15-22 with 3 home runs. Regardless of whether I only know this because of fantasy, that’s scorching.

“Over his last 10 games, DJ LeMahieu is batting .537 (22 for 41) with 16 runs scored and 18 RBIs. LeMahieu is the first Yankees player since Mickey Mantle in May 1955 to have at least a .500 batting average, 15 runs and 15 RBIs over a 10-game span.”

Well, that .537 average is going to drop a little with today’s lackluster 3-6 performance. At least he was able to balance it out with a couple runs and RBI’s.

I was surprised to see that he is just 1 off the AL lead for RBIs.

Who was the last lead off hitter to lead the league in rbis?

I can only see Blackmon has the leadoff rbi record with 103, so I’m guessing it’s never happened.

This assumption is correct, just to verify. If you go to 479th in RBI, it extends into a position for 511th, at 120.

At 103, and excluding the split season of 1981, Blackmon’s mark would only lead the NL as recently as 1920 with Rogers Hornsby, High Pockets Kelly at 94. In the Junior Circuit, the Bobby Veach’s 84 in 1918 was the last league leader under 103.

Of all the non-1981 players to have RBI leading seasons of sub 103, but past 1908 (for BRef game log purposes), none of them so much as batted lead off once in those respective seasons. The closest was Brooklyn’s Hi Myers, who in 1919 batted 2nd 7 times, lead the NL with 73 driven in.

FWIW, 53 of DJL's 61 RBIs are from the leadoff spot. He could maybe make a run at Blackmon's record, but it will be tough.

On the flipside, with EE on the roster and Judge and potentially Stanton back, there should be more opportunities because of the deeper lineup.

Many Yankee fans were shocked/irritated/idiotic when Tauchman got chosen over Clint to come up with Stanton out, Mike Axisa is still inexplicably bitching about it. They didn't care that Tauchman was a way way way better defender and better baserunner, they just saw Clint's admittedly superb bat. So it's interesting to check 2019 OPSs, the one area Clint is supposed to be the better option:

Frazier:

AAA (109 ABs): .853
MLB (191 ABs): .843

Tauchman:

AAA (95 ABs): .891
MLB (138 ABs): .863

This is Tauchman's line in 59 AB in the 9 spot. He doesn't do nearly as well batting 5-7.

Tulo officially retired today, one less guy on NY's lengthy 60 day IL list.

Gardner to the IL and Tarpley recalled. Do we have a two-man bench?
Yeah, that's got to be a one day thing with Maybin likely back tomorrow. They really need to trade Cessa ASAP so that they have one more back of the bullpen spot to use to bring guys up and down, Cessa's lack of options is really hurting their flexibility.

Voit onto the IL with a sports hernia, they will decide in the next day or two if he needs surgery or not. If he has surgery, he will be out around six weeks.

Let him heal and cross your fingers that our cushion in the division holds up. Stanton, Sanchez, and now Voit. Really need EE and Judge to pick up the team.

NY made their first set of Sept call-ups, three warm bodies for the pitching staff plus Clint Frazier. Ryan Dull, Tyler Lyons and Chance Adams, the first two of those will almost certainly be dumped when Severino, Betances, Stanton, Montgomery or Heller is ready, but most notably David Hale got moved to the 60 day IL, which means his season is over.

Dull, Lyons, Rosa, Valera, all on the 40 man now and disposable when better players are ready to return.

I don't get Ben Heller not being up in this first wave of callups for NY. He has had five outings since returning to Scranton two weeks ago, 6 3 1 1 2 7 combined and his velocity is back (can't find a link for this but definitely remember reading it, I thought he was touching 100 but maybe just high 90s).

And it is not really a question of adding him to the 40 man, as he has been there since I think 2017 and is coming off Tommy John (April 2018) and I believe his rehab clock ends before the season anyway, so he needs to be activated (I think? I am not totally clear on this part) and it really seems like he could help now, like he would have been a better option than Dull in the 7th today. Maybe there is something I am missing, it seems like JP Feyereisen could also help the September pen and has earned a shot but he is not on the 40 man yet so that at least I get.

Also Deivi has gotten hit in all three of his relief outings so far, pretty sure he is not coming up this year.

Boone said this AM Stephen Tarpley will come off the IL soon, that's good news. Jonathan Holder is starting a throwing program too.

Only three weeks left so they are running out of games and days, but a bunch of guys still expected back for NY in time to try to get in the mix as potential playoff options:

Severino: 50 pitches in a AA playoff game, 5 more after put him at 55 and he said after the game he could be at 100 in three starts. Boone said before the game that if this one went ok, the next would probably be in NY and he said after the game:

"Aaron Boone said postgame the Yankees will have discussions over the next 24-48 hours about the next step for Luis Severino. Trenton advanced, so he could make a third rehab start or he could re-join the Yankees and "build up that way.”"

He unfortunately would only be on three days rest when NY needs a starter on Tuesday or I think he would definitely come up, but he could slot in after that.

Montgomery: Will start a game of the next playoff series for Trenton, looks rusty.

Betances: His first game action all season tonight, he will stay in Trenton for now too and try to get his velocity up a bit, he topped out at 94 tonight.

Thairo: Going to AAA for game 3 of Scranton/Durham, hopefully he will be back up after that series ends, likely after that same game 3.

Stanton: He is facing live pitching in Tampa, but he is running out of days.

"New York Yankees outfielder Giancarlo Stanton had five plate appearances in a simulated game Friday as he works to return this month from a knee injury.

The slugger also worked out in right field at the Yankees’ complex in Tampa, Florida. He is expected to take part in another simulated game Saturday."

Hicks: This is the latest I see for him, also running out of days.

Hicks said he would likely begin throwing on 9/2, followed by some hitting a couple of days later.

Also I guess they will get Ben Heller after Scranton loses one more, he needs a 40 man spot (we hardly knew ye Ryan Dull) but has to be activated off the 60 day IL once his rehab clock runs out. I'm very curious to see him, not sure of his current velocity but he hit 100 pre-TJS and he has good numbers on his rehab stint in AAA. And Stephen Tarpley was supposed to be close to returning too, him and Holder need to be activated and used or put on the 60 day IL so their 40 man spot is open for the rest of the season.

They're saying two more outings in Trenton before being activated for Betances, so maybe a week from now.

Ben Heller is back! Adonis Rosa DFAd for a 40 man spot (they will probably re-sign him if no one grabs him, but not a big deal if they lose him), Tauchman to the 10 day IL for now.

Hicks shut down again for a few weeks, trying to avoid Tommy John surgery on his throwing arm. He and Tauchman are both almost certainly done for 2019 now.
