And Loaisiga is shut down for four weeks with another arm issue, he may never be healthy.

Cortes Jr is back for Andujar, even I'm confused about who is actually on the roster now. These are just today's moves:

On the team: Aaron Hicks, Nestor Cortes Jr., Chance Adams

Off the team: Jonathan Loaisiga, Miguel Andújar, Mike Tauchman

Current roster:

C: Sanchez
1B: Voit
2B: LeMahieu
SS; Torres
3B: Urshela
LF: Gardner
CF: Hicks (yay)
RF: Maybin
DH: Frazier

bench: Romine, Estrada

SP: Tanaka, German, Happ, CC, ???
RP: Cortes, Cessa, Adams, Harvey, Holder, Green, Kahnle, Ottavino, Britton, Chapman

Adams or Cortes will likely pitch a bunch tonight and get sent down for Mike Ford, so they can at least get back to 12 position players.

Sounds like surgery decision on Andujar to be made by tomorrow EOD. Have to figure they’re leaning the surgery route given Urshela’s emergence and Didi’s potential return in the next month or so.

If Stanton can ever return from the shoulder issue, the DH is probably spoken for.

It’s amazing how Stanton’s injury was not big news when it happened, and even more amazing how the Yanks have played with both Stanton and Judge sidelined.

Is there anything to be learned from the 16-6 run the Yankees have been on lately? They took two of three from Boston, Tampa and the Twins. Three contenders.

Yup. Stanton situation is just weird. Hurt his bicep, healed, and then somehow hurt his shoulder. Hopefully he can return by early June. Yankees have done tremendous job holding it all together. This will be a juggernaut by July when everyone is back other than Severino.

Houston is rolling and will be getting stud prospect reinforcements at some point in Alvarez and Whitley. Boston appears to be righting the ship. So, basically, we’re back to 2017/2018 and we’ll see who emerges in October.

Except MIN has possibly bumped CLE, and the likely SPs in any wild card game will probably be far better than Ervin Santana and Liam Hendriks, the two guys NY has faced the last two seasons.

The Yankees have acquired 1B/DH Kendrys Morales and cash considerations from Oakland in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. To make room on the 40-man roster, RHP Jonathan Loaisiga has been transferred to the 60-day IL.

That seems to make it clear that even if Andujar doesn't decide to get the surgery, they are not counting on him for anything.

Morales had lousy numbers for OAK so far this year, but pretty good underlying exit velocity numbers. He's a switch-hitter who hit 101 HRs in the four previous seasons, and this from Olney is interesting:

"Teammates say Kendrys Morales is a tremendous resource of information on opposing pitchers -- studies film, shares useful stuff w teammates about how they're going to be pitched."

Also that Loaisiga move takes him out of the rotation picture probably for the season, Severino and Montgomery due back before him as of now. NY is thin after the current 5 (including Paxton) without any of those, maybe Chance Adams or David Hale is next up.

Disappointing on Loaisiga, he has incredible stuff, but he has never been able to stay healthy, that’s how NY got him in the first place. Maybe a bullpen weapon down the line or a trade chip...

Paxton probably back within the week (looking like no rehab game), Stanton starting rehab games Monday with Tampa, and Didi scheduled to play SS in an extended spring training game Monday.

DIdi is in AAA as of tonight, he is supposed to be there for six days (7 innings at SS tonight, DH tomorrow, 9 innings at SS on Thursday for the first three days).

I am amazed at this year's Yankees. SO many guys on the IL.... and then there's the guys that have stepped in....

Gio Urshela. 27 years of age, a total nobody. From 2015-2018 he played 167 major league games...not a tiny amount, but clearly a journeyman type. Cleveland and Toronto. Put up this combined slash line over those seasons: .225/.275/.315/.589, 57 ops+.

This year with the Yankees? 44 games, .333/.388/.455/.842, 124 ops+

DJ LeMahieu. 30 years of age, been in the majors since 2011. Had exactly ONE season with an ops+ over 93 - that was in 2016 as a 27-year old in his prime. The last two seasons: .294/.350/.418/.767, 91 ops+.

This year with the Yankees? 49 games, .313/.360/.427/.787, 110 ops+

Their Estrada. 23 years of age. Prospect. Last year in two levels of minor-league ball: .192/.210/.231/.441. Then the Arizona Fall League: .238/.282/.263/.545. Then this year in AAA: .273/.319/.455/.774.

This year with the Yankees? 22 games, .304/.347/.565/.912, 137 ops+

Then there's the ongoing Luke Voit story. Career minor leaguer for the most part. Gets some run with the Cardinals. In 70 games for them he hits: .240/.307/.432/.739, 93 ops+

This year with the Yankees? 53 games, .259/.377/.492/.870, 130 ops+
Two years with the Yankees? 92 games, .289/.388/.571/.959, 154 ops+

Just beyond belief.

Urshela: NY had been after him for a while, once they got him last August, the AAA hitting coach (Phil Plantier?) helped him to make some changes which have stuck. He was a pretty highly regarded prospect at one point for CLE, and Cashman specializes in those kind of former top prospects who are now 26 or 27 and out of chances with their original team.

LeMahieu: COL helps home team hitters but kills them on the road, we talked about this a lot this winter.

Estrada: A borderline top 100 prospect who got shot in the hip last winter and they couldn't take the bullet out for months, so of course last year was a lost season. I am surprised he is contributing this season, though.

Voit: The bar for making it is really high if you are a not very good fielding 1B, and he was very blocked in STL. Those 70 games were mostly pinch-hitting, just 125 ABs. He has hit consistently going back to 2017 now, and he is another one who NY tried to get for years.

You'll note that the Dodgers and Astros and Yankees all continue to dig up bargain players who seem to blossom as soon as they put on their new team's uniform. That's not a coincidence or luck, all three of those teams are at the cutting edge of scouting and evaluating and all have poured a ton of money into it (especially LA and NYY, not as sure about the money with HOU).

Keep an eye on JP Feyereisen from that Andrew Miller trade, he has been pitching great in relief in AAA (his third season in Scranton without a callup, poor guy) and has to be high on the list of non-40 man roster relief possibilities currently.

I'd forgotten about Blake Rutherford. Quick check of his stats - .515 OPS in 40 games at AA this year. Yikes. Looks like another steal for Cashman.

Rutherford is hurt now also, not clear how badly but has been out the last few days. Kahnle's return to form so far this season after a lost 2018 certainly makes that one look better.

NY is going to face some tough roster moves if everyone gets healthy ever, but the first two seem pretty easy and obvious.

CC is scheduled to be activated tomorrow, and Cortes Jr. should go down then. Didi is on track to be activated next week sometime (if Scranton ever stops getting rained out and he can get enough games in) and the accompanying move there seemingly has to be DFAing Kendrys Morales (someone elsewhere suggested offering him a job as assistant hitting coach, I'm down with that). LeMahieu will back up Voit at 1B.

I think it’ll be some time before Didi plays every day at SS. I’m gonna venture a guess that there’s at least 2 weeks of working him in.

Betances with at least a bit of a setback with some soreness after his last throwing session he is getting checked out, fingers crossed there, but Stanton sounds like he is maybe a week away and Judge maybe only a couple weeks behind that, maybe both by the end of the month.

Cashman needs to cut bait on Morales and Cessa, make Morales an assistant hitting or bench coach (if he wants) if he is really that good a clubhouse influence, but get him out of the freaking middle of the lineup and off the roster. I expected Cessa to be gone two offseasons ago and yet he is still somehow here, but he is out of options and back to terrible again and it's time to audition other guys in that spot. Ford and Tarpley probably deserve the first shots respectively, both have been up already and are killing it in Scranton (1.129 OPS and a 1.50 ERA in 18 innings). I thought both of these were obvious moves coming into this Indians series, but they are even more obvious now, before the two game Mets series on Monday. Thanks Brian!

Stanton is scheduled to play rehab games in Tampa Tues/Wed, travel day Thursday, Scranton starting Friday.

And Judge might start rehab games this weekend!

I think this means Clint Frazier is even more likely to be dealt for pitching, so maybe we are looking at something like this once Stanton and Judge are back in a week or so:

LeMahieu 3B
Judge RF
Stanton LF
Sanchez C
Encarnacion DH
Voit 1B
Hicks CF
Didi SS
Gleyber 2B

Urshela and Gardner on the bench, Clint traded. Every guy in that lineup except DJ has 30 HR potential. Yowza.

Man oh man. NY is all in for 2020 now. That lineup!
Well, they're all in if they trade for a SP or two. Juan Then was their #27 prospect according to mlb.com, so not exactly pushing all their chips in yet.

With Judge and Stanton due back soon, EE didn't seem to be a screaming need.

I guess Scherzer wasn't available today
Judge and Stanton take the corner OF spots, Encarnacion is the DH, and Clint Frazier can be dealt for a much-needed SP. The price was too cheap to pass on, money and prospect both.

They got the AL HR leader for a lottery ticket and Seattle paid most of the freight. DiPoto is a joke.

Awesomely TB is paying $5M of his deal as part of the three way deal with CLE and SEA earlier this year.

Clint Frazier sent down after the game for Encarnacion, he could use work in the outfield obviously but that is rough anyway.

Having options is a curse. But it was either him or Maybin, who is a polished player.
Tauchman too, but he will go down for Stanton after tomorrow's game. Clint said he expected to be sent down when Judge and Stanton came back, it's just a bit earlier than anyone expected, but it shows that NY doesn't really trust him in the OF right now against TB.

This is looking like a slow pitch softball team. Damn
I posted this on social media last night but I resisted posting it here until now, I did this after the trade last night.

LeMahieu (#1 in MLB currently with a .466 BA with RISP)
Judge (52 HRs in 2017)
Stanton (59 HRs in 2017)
Sanchez (2nd in the AL this year with 20 HRs)
Encarnacion (1st in the AL this year with 21 HRs)
Voit (1st in the AL with 31 HRs since taking NY's 1B job last Aug 24)
Hicks (27 HRs in 2018)
Gregorius (27 HRs in 2018)
Torres (39 HRs since debuting at 21 last April)

So let's do an update of where this team stands, current 25 man roster:

================

Sanchez
Voit
Torres
Didi
Urshela
Gardner
Hicks
Maybin
Encarnacion

bench: LeMahieu, Tauchman, Romine

Paxton
Tanaka
Happ
Sabathia

Cortes Jr.
Hale
Cessa
Green
Holder
Kahnle
Ottavino
Britton
Chapman

================

Stanton back on Tuesday will likely bump Tauchman to AAA, then Judge soon after will maybe bump a pitcher (please Cessa please Cessa please Cessa), allowing Maybin who has no options to stick around for now.

I think Cashman has more trades coming soon, he badly needs a reliable SP and needs to move some depth. The AAA team is brimming with guys who deserve big league jobs somewhere (Frazier, Estrada, Mike Ford, Logan Morrison, Tyler Wade has been hot lately).

You gotta play defense against Tampa because their pitching dictates low-scoring games. Clint proved he can’t play right field. Injuries dictated he do it on short notice. But he had early-season problems in left field, too. My worry is he goes down to Scranton and acts like he doesn't belong there. So here is where Scranton manager Jay Bell takes over. Ex-big leaguer.
