The Opening Day roster is solidifying, between the injuries and the quotes from Boone/Cashman, I think we basically know who's coming north in just under three weeks, assuming no more injuries.

Sanchez
Voit
Gleyber
Tulo
Andujar
Gardner
Hicks
Judge
Stanton

LeMahieu
Wade
Romine

Bird, Clint to AAA to get regular ABs.

Paxton
Tanaka
Happ
Loaisiga
German

DL: Severino, CC, Montgomery.

Cessa
Kahnle
Holder
Green
Ottavino
Britton
Betances
Chapman

Tarpley to AAA.

I heard Boone say they try Green as an opener some of the times the lesser swingman such as German are in turn, while Sevy/CC are on DL. makes sense to me

I didn’t see that but an opener for German and maybe Loaisiga does make sense, NY has so many strong relievers and German gave up a lot of first inning runs last year, although he wasn’t too much more effective after that either.

Rethinking the back of the pitching staff a bit:

Cessa and German are both pitching very well in Florida and are likely ahead of Loaisiga for the 4th/5th rotation spots to start the season. Since Mike King got a late start to spring training (he is throwing now and is expected to join Scranton around May 1), I think it makes sense to send Loaisiga down and keep him stretched out as the 6th man (until CC is back mid-April), and then Tarpley can take the final bullpen spot (8.2 3 0 0 1 6 so far this spring).

Tanaka
Paxton
Happ
Cessa
German

DL: Severino, CC, Montgomery.

Tarpley
Kahnle
Holder
Green
Ottavino
Britton
Betances
Chapman

Loaisiga to AAA.

OK, let's update this a bit. Betances and Hicks will start the season on the IL and even though Gio threw 80 pitches in a simulated game yesterday, they say he won't be ready for Opening Day.

Sanchez
Voit
Gleyber
Tulo
Andujar
Stanton
Gardner
Judge
Bird

LeMahieu
Wade
Romine

Hicks and Didi on IL, Frazier to AAA.

Tanaka
Paxton
Happ
Cessa
German

IL: Severino, CC, Montgomery. Gio preparing in AAA, I guess.

Loaisiga
Tarpley
Kahnle
Holder
Green
Ottavino
Britton
Chapman

Betances on IL.

Maybe with the addition of Gio (which pushes Loaisiga to 9th SP currently) and Betances on the IL, NY goes with Loaisiga as the long man until someone comes back. They said yesterday they would like him to get around 100 innings this season, so not having him in the AAA rotation to start the year preserves his innings a bit too.

NY's roster is set, German will be the 4th starter, Cessa will be in long relief, and Loasiga will be sent down initially but activated for game 6 as the 5th starter for now.

Also NY just made a small trade, moving 24 year old lefty reliever Phillip Diehl to COL for 28 year old OF Mike Tauchman. Tauchman was blocked in COL but seems pretty interesting as OF depth, he has speed and can play all three OF positions, and he has developed a lot of (AAA) power over the past couple of seasons. This article is from last month:

https://fantasy.fangraphs.com/this-is-the-definitive-mike-tauchman-hype-post/

Tauchman has an option left and will not make the team to begin with, but with Tyler Wade their 4th OF currently (with Hicks out), it's nice to have more AAA OF depth, something I have been calling for all offseason.

Tauchman was added to the 40 man, Montgomery put on the 60 day DL to open up a spot.

A little surprising, since both players have a history of performing very well in AAA and terribly in very limited time in the bigs, and Wade had a much better spring than Tauchman, but I guess they feel more comfortable with Tauchman's defensive experience in the OF.

That'll explain why Stanton looked so uncomfortable. Gotta love playing in 35 degrees and rain

Tauchman can play center, Frazier can’t really.
Saw Frazier play CF in Pawtucket. His arm plays well out there. Didn’t have to show his range but he’s built like a corner outfielder.
If Tauchman is 28, he must be a late bloomer, as your research implies.

It's a similar case to Voit, except a speedy outfielder instead of a 1B/DH. Both players were totally blocked in their organization and Cashman and the analytics people saw enough to liberate them at minimal cost. Hopefully Tauchman is similarly successful if and when he gets a chance here...

I linked this before, but in case anyone missed it:

Those are the types of hype posts that get me unreasonably excited over the analytics department and system. It'll take a championship for people to fully acknowledge, but the amount of depth we continue to build with minor moves like this is what makes me confident that we're leaps and bounds ahead of Boston in player development. We're only a couple of years into this but its so much fun to watch.

It's absolutely ridiculous on my part, but I might actually be most excited about all of the 17 and 18 year old kids they have signed the last couple of summers, led by the upcoming Jasson Dominguez signing in July.

A switch-hitting center fielder that reminds people of Bo Jackson, Yasiel Puig and Yoan Moncada? Is that something you might be interested in?

"Scouts throw around some big names when trying to wrap their arms around Dominguez’s package of tools: Yasiel Puig, Bo Jackson, and Yoan Moncada are the most common ones. Dominguez runs the 60-yard dash in anywhere from 6.19 to 6.30 seconds, and is a 70 or 80 runner depending on whom you ask. His frame (5-foot-11, 194 pounds, sculpted like a Greek god), easy plus arm, and quick feet are catching-friendly, and scouts that have seem him try the position say he could probably do it full-time, but it sounds like most evaluators (and likely the Yankees) will develop him in center field to let his bat move more quickly. Some scouts think Dominguez’s hands could work in the infield, but he has very few reps there.

The bat speed and power are obvious, so optimistic scouts see a plus hitter with at least plus raw power and plus game power. Dominguez has already hit some balls 110 mph in batting practice, and his righty swing has now caught up with his natural lefty swing in terms of contact traits."

I was thinking this too, him and Bird are two of the ones still around, which one would not bet on.

NY still has a lot of depth, although it is being tested early. LeMahieu is the regular 3B now and Wade has his utility role, plus he can be used as the 4th OF if yet another one goes down (he almost made the team in this role before they got Tauchman at the last minute) and Urshela could come up to play 3B if needed (not on the 40 man). Thairo Estrada (on the 40) and Kyle Holder (not on the 40) are both also capable of playing very good defensive middle infield in emergencies. Higashioka is a good third catcher, Gio Gonzalez is starting opening day for Scranton in a few days, relievers I'm not sure but maybe Acevedo or Chance Adams (both on the 40 man)? Hopefully some of these guys start coming back before too long, CC's suspension is quietly over after tomorrow's game.

For sure, but when franchise players are free agents and want to play for you, you should sign them.

Cashman didn’t want Machado in the clubhouse as the highest paid guy on the team, it will be years before we can judge that very well. LeMahieu at 2/24 is off to a nice start, though.

I have rooted for Miguel Andujar for years before he made the club last year, but I keep thinking his loss (if he is actually done for the season, and maybe even longer) may possibly be addition by subtraction. You never like to cut into your depth in April, but Andujar's awful D at 3B (a bit better in the first few games this year but still well below acceptable) was maybe NY's biggest hole. LeMahieu now as the everyday 3B is a major upgrade defensively and hopefully not a huge downgrade offensively.

Other guys need to step up now, this gives not just LeMahieu, but Wade, Frazier and Bird all more of an opportunity to show what they can (or can't) do.

Agreed. You lose power but you gain a comparable contact hitter and better defense. I don’t think Yankees lose too much other than the obvious depth in the event Tulo goes down.

Stanton is a much bigger loss but it’s now or never time for Frazier.

My way too early hot take is that if Andujar is out and LaMahieu has a successful season, there's strong justification to trade him in the offseason.

Edit: I do disagree with Jon on addition by subtraction, however. A healthy Andujar provides you a worst case scenario of being where are right now and a best case scenario of an offensive force with improved but not great defense with DJL as a fallback.

A healthy Andujar has to play 3B a good bit of the time, and with so many lefties on the staff, his defense would be an issue every game. We haven't even seen CC yet, and that is the guy he is least equipped to play behind, as he constantly forces weak grounders to the left side that need to be converted into outs. It's only addition by subtraction if Bird or Frazier step up and hit well, but it does eliminate the major obvious weakness of the team, which would not have been easy to deal with if Andujar had stayed healthy.

There's no way to keep Andujar in the lineup at DH if all he can do is hit (due to injury)?
I don't really understand the Ohtani situation, but I don't see how you can hit with a labrum tear in your shoulder.

More importantly, I don't think Andujar as a DH is a much better option than Bird or Clint Frazier, especially since the latter two are healthy. This is why I was so in favor of trading him this winter, he isn't a third baseman and as a DH, he is a very good hitter but so are lots of others.

Yankees are hopeful Stanton can be back in 3 weeks. Andujar status is iffier. Could go either way for 2019. Good thing they signed LeMahieu. Looks like brilliant move now.

On the pitching side of things, Sabathia's suspension is done after today's game, and he pitched four innings yesterday somewhere (Tampa presumably?). He needs one more start and is expected to be back the turn after that, so about 10 days.
Betances is also pretty close to returning, Severino farther away, still doing long toss.

Thairo Estrada coming up to replace Tulo, I guess because he’s already on the 40 man. He just turned 23 in February, he was very good in AA in 2017 at 21, then he got robbed at home in Venezuela that winter and got shot in the hip. They couldn’t take the bullet out until last fall, 2018 was a lost season for him, but now he’s getting the call. He is maybe a better defensive SS than Gleyber, FWIW.

Dan Federico tweeted this last week:

" Mar 29
With the RailRiders starting on April 4, one player to watch is Thairo Estrada. Killed it this spring (.286/.394/.464) after a down 2018 due to his unfortunate injury. He's been an excellent contact hitter, consummate team player. One scout said he can be an above average MLB SS"

Walk/triple/single/single to the first four batters for Gio Gonzalez just now on opening day in AAA. Combine that with strong showings by German and Loaisiga and CC's return in about a week (and hopefully Severino only a few weeks behind) and an April 20 opt-out and it's looking unlikely Gio will ever actually make it to NY.

NY signed 34 year old Cliff Pennington to a minor league deal to replace Estrada in AAA, he is starting for Scranton tonight. Kyle Holder can't be thrilled about that, hopefully he starts hitting and forces his way into the picture because his defense is spectacular.
