So now the Opening Day roster is set:

Tanaka
Pineda
Sabathia
Eovaldi
Warren (injured: Nova, Capuano)

Rogers
Martin
Shreve
Carpenter
Wilson
Miller
Betances

McCann
Tex
Drew
Gregorius
Headley
Gardner
Ellsbury
Beltran
A-Rod

Young
Jones
Murphy
Petit (injured-Pirela)

Nice to see the team so healthy going in the season, my one issue is the back of the bullpen (Rogers/Martin/Shreve) when there are better options in Whitley/Lindgren/Bailey, each of whom is off the current roster for specific reasons, but overall that makes what should be an exceedingly strong part of the team a notch weaker. I'm sure we'll see them all before too long, and hopefully Nova too.

Pirela has led off and played 2B the last three days in AAA, yesterday he was 3-5 and today 3-5 again, with a HR.

Please activate him for Petit ASAP, and please let me never see Brendan Ryan in pinstripes again. Thanks in advance.

Turncoat Dreamboat onto the DL, and in a mini-surprise, the slumping but earlier very hot Slade Heathcott is added to the 40 man roster and called up.

A former first round pick in 2009 and non-tendered this past December, he was re-signed when no one else was especially interested and has been leading off and playing CF for Scranton. His OPS was over .800 as recently as May 10, but he is 4 for his last 31, not really ideal timing for either player or club. I guess he is up because he is the best defensive option?

Tests on Brian McCann's foot came back negative again (he had a MRI for this same soreness a week or two ago), so he is day-to-day.

Chris Martin and Mason Williams up, as NY continues the parade of young outfielders getting chances while Ellsbury is hurt.

So the full set of moves since yesterday:

Brendan Ryan off the DL, Jose Pirela sent down.

Mason Williams up, Ramon Flores down.

Chris Martin up, Andrew Miller to the DL.

Interesting. They could have used Miller's injury to bring Flores back right away. Williams seems like a similar player to Flores. I guess this is Cashman tipping his cap to Damon Oppenheimer.

Williams might be more capable of playing CF? I think they're using the Ellsbury injury to get a better bead on what they have in AAA, for replacements and also for trades.

His dad was a WR on the Patriots for a bit, Derwin Williams.

He lived in Pawtucket until he was 14 when the father got a job in Florida, in part so that his son could play baseball year-round.

Mason Williams is also related to Walt (No Neck) Williams, one of the more interesting MLB players from long ago. He actually had no neck. No Neck was Derwin's father's brother.

huh... never knew. Of course,I was out of Pawtucket by the time he was 6. 14 years in Pawtucket is long enough for me to root for him regardless

interesting. I knew a few kids from Little League who also moved to FLA for year-round baseball, both pitchers and both screwed their arms up in high school

Are you speaking of young Tommy McLane? Lefthander, he went to the University of South Carolina, got drafted in maybe the 23rd round by Boston and had a nice rookie season with Lowell before his elbow forced him to retire. We went up to see him play and do a story. Tommy took us to a beer place near the park and started telling us about this 17-year-old Dominican shortstop whose athlete prowess and sheer talent were already a legend to his teammates. Hanley Ramirez. That was around 2003.

One more start for Nova in AAA which means Warren stays in the rotation another turn and the bullpen stays as is for now, I hate that decision.

Also Esmil Rogers cleared waivers and accepted his assignment to AAA.

Bryan Mitchell back down after pitching 3 innings, Danny Burawa up. Also, Mason Williams on the DL to be safe after his shoulder popped out the other day, I'd guess Flores is back up to replace up but don't actually see that anywhere. (Edit: Yep, Flores is back up.)

Jacob Lindgren and Sergio Santos both are undergoing surgery, the former for a bone spur (12 weeks estimated), the latter Tommy John.

Jacoby Ellsbury, still a frustratingly slow healer from the other side of the fence.

Not a total coincidence that NY's three game streak of suck coincided with Teixeira having to sit out with soreness in his surgically repaired right wrist, He got a cortisone shot a few days ago and came back today with a 3-5 but that is something major to potentially watch. Him in between A-Rod and McCann makes the middle of the lineup a lot tougher, and he is not perfect on D but he is a huge upgrade from Garrett Jones (who at least is an actual 1B, in an upgrade from last year).

Yankees just re-signed Garrett Jones after they cut him to make room for Dustin Ackley. With Ackley on the DL, I guess they wanted Jones back. What a weird situation.

How does that work? Does he get his original contract money plus whatever the Yankees signed him for now, or is it just his original contract?

NY is calling up 8 guys tomorrow, and more will follow once they are eligible (guys sent down in the last 10 days):

Austin Romine
Rob Refsnyder
Jose Pirela
Dustin Ackley
Rico Noel
Andrew Bailey
Caleb Cotham
James Pazos

They will need to open 3 40 man spots (4 guys need to be added, but they're at 39 now), but they haven't announced how they'll do that yet.

Presumably Chris Martin will be gone, since he's not being called up, Cole Figueroa too, I guess. The third spot could be Tyler Austin (underwhelming in AA this year) or Lindgren to the 60 day DL.

Goody and Rumbelow should be up soon also, they're both on the 40 man already.

Bailey's ready to pitch?
I didn't know he had rehabbed.

(checked the numbers, looks like he's been pretty effective in the minors)
Kind of telling that Bailey hasn't pitched back to back all season. Mostly, he has pitched every third or fourth day in his 12 appearances with Scranton. Only once did he pitch on one day of rest. That won't hurt him with NY, which doesn't need him to do heavy lifting.

Domingo German onto the 60 day DL (surprised they started the clock on him) and Tyler Austin and Cole Figueroa DFAd, somehow Chris Martin survives.
