A catchall thread for discussion about moves on and off NY's 25 and 40 man rosters...

NY clearly needs to make a couple of moves before their next game Tuesday night. These moves seem fairly obvious: Scott Sizemore (.936 OPS in AAA with a May 1 opt-out) comes up for Shane Greene, since they don't need 13 pitchers anymore and Romine or Murphy for Cervelli. I'm still not sure who can play 1B besides Johnson with Cervelli out, though. Maybe Sizemore, but he's only played 2B and 3B in the majors. They can clear the 40 man roster spot for Sizemore by putting Brendan Ryan onto the 60 day DL and backdating the majority of that.

J.R. Murphy played 26 games at third base in the low minors before focusing totally on catching. He has also 26 ABs to Romine's 10 so far this season at Scranton so I'm guessing he's the guy to come up, even if Romine came up last week for two days.

Well, unless he can play 1B, whoever comes up isn't getting regular ABs, so they might want to leave Murphy down to keep getting ABs. Also Murphy/Romine's ABs would probably be pretty close if Romine hadn't come up briefly, as you said.

Scott Sizemore and JR (I'm not writing out John Ryan no matter what he wants) Murphy are coming up, as expected, Greene back down and Cervelli to the DL.

Not sure what the 40 man roster move for Sizemore is, but if it's Brendan Ryan to the DL, we had it all here yesterday.

Who the heck insists that people use his first and middle names? Either pick J.R. or John to go by.

Whatever he wants his name to be, Murphy was among the top pitch framers in the minor leagues last year according to the Prospectus article that showed a top 5 list. IIRC it was Sandy Leon (Nats), Christian Vazquez, and Murphy at 3rd.

The Yankees going with him over Romine for a longterm fill in as backup catcher is more evidence that the Yankees are prioritizing pitch framing at catcher (playing Stewart and paying big money to McCann being the other obvious evidence).

Letting Russell Martin go continues to be inexplicable in every way, though.

Pretty strong words from Cashman, saying JR is a better player than Romine:

“He’s the No. 1 catcher in Triple-A,” Cashman said. “And we had a real need where, when McCann isn’t playing, he’s going to play. … Now that we’re in a situation where when the No. 1 catcher isn’t there, the backup is obviously the starter, we’re going to take the best player.”

Shuttlin' Shane Greene back up as the 26th man for tonight's second game, he'll be back down tomorrow.

A morning of moves with more to come, where do we stand?

Nuno out of the rotation with his spot up tomorrow, I'm guessing Shane Greene will come up for that.
McCarthy into the rotation, starting Wednesday in place of Whitley. Whitley back to AAA, he has pitched a lot of innings already this year.
Soriano DFAd, presumably replaced by Zoilo Almonte when this all shakes out in a few days.
Bruce Billings up today for relief help, presumably temporarily.

Summary:

Out: Nuno, Whitley, Soriano
In: McCarthy, Greene, Almonte

Out with the old, in with the reasonably new. Soriano represents a lot of what is wrong with the 2014 Yankees. Well past his prime and a liability in the field. His fielding exhibition in Saturday's game was probably the final straw. We've seen enough from Almonte to know he's only an upgrade in terms of energy, speed and defense.
Greene's time has come. He has pitched well of late and Whitley is cooked. The only question is, how long before Cashman trades for another journeyman big league starter.

No Zoilo Almonte in the RailRiders lineup today. Nor is Shane Greene included with the upcoming rotation. So, there you go.
Good job on the speculation, JA. Now here is my next question: Can Cashman make a big move without sacrificing the two or three elite prospects at hand in the minors? Is there even a quality pitcher out there who could make the Yankees a contender? I don't count Price. He's not coming to NY for a lot of reasons.

Personally, I don't think there is a player out there who can put the Yankees on even footing with Baltimore.

Trying to figure out what the hell NY is doing, let's stick to position players:

C: McCann, Cervelli
1B: Teixeira
2B: Roberts, Drew, Prado (Roberts to be DFAd?)
SS: Jeter, Ryan
3B: Headley, Wheeler
OF: Gardner, Ellsbury, Ichiro, Almonte
DH: Beltran

that is 15 guys and presumably they will cut to 13. Maybe Beltran can play OF again and they can send Almonte to AAA and DFA Roberts? Horrendous roster construction no matter what.

This sums it up nicely,  OPS numbers for this season:

K. Johnson: .677 C. Headley: .669 B. Roberts: .659 D. Jeter: .657 S. Drew: .583, Prado .687

I think the idea is to have Prado play 2B next year? Such a fucking mess, Headley is the best of these bozos and he will likely be gone because A-Rod will be back. ARGH.

With Teixeira feeling lightheaded, and the Yanks carrying 13 pitchers, the bench last night was Ryan and a catcher.  Good thing they have BROCK PRADO, who can play many positions, and that they didn't need any pinch hitters.

I don't get why they didn't just move Prado to 1B and leave Headley at 3B, since he had never played 1B before.
