I waited to start this until NY clinched a spot, we currently know that they will be either the #1, #2 or #4 seeds. A few of the roster decisions may be opponent-specific, but here's a shot as of now:

I was going to do different lineups for RHP and LHP but I am not sure NY will change the nine guys currently:

Torres 2B
Soto RF
Judge CF
Wells C
Stanton DH
Dominguez LF
Chisholm 3B
Rizzo 1B
Volpe SS

Bench: Berti, Grisham, Cabrera, Trevino

Since NY is currently carrying 28 position players, that leaves Verdugo out unless they go with 14 hitters/12 pitchers (certainly possible). They are also still carrying Duke Ellis on the 40 man as a potential pinch-runner, he has 62 SBs this year between AA/AAA/MLB and only 4 CS (5-0 in brief MLB time). Put Berti or Grisham in the OF as a defensive replacement for Dominguez if you need to, Verdugo can be head cheerleader.

Cole
Rodon
Gil/Schmidt/Cortes

If NY gets a bye, they only need three SPs in the first round. Cole and Rodon are locks and then I can see arguments for any of the other three, especially Nestor if it's one of many teams that can't hit lefties.

Bullpen:

two of Gil/Schmidt/Cortes

Hill
Holmes
Kahnle
Hamilton
Weaver

Which leaves 4 candidates from the current roster for the final 2 spots, 5 if Cousins is OK.

Mayza
Leiter Jr.
Beeter
Stroman

Leiter Jr. has been a mess and shouldn't make it. Mayza will probably make it as a second lefty (third if Nestor is in the bullpen), so maybe this week is about seeing if they think Beeter is an upgrade on Stroman, or maybe Cousins bumps both of them.

So NY is the #1 seed in the AL, and get the winner of the BAL/KC series starting on Saturday. KC is dangerous with their rotation and pretty strong bullpen, BAL won the season series 8-5, both tough matchups.

The Athletic guys aren't great at this, but their postseason roster prediction as of this AM:

1. Gleyber Torres, 2B
2. Juan Soto, RF
3. Aaron Judge, CF
4. Austin Wells, C
5. Giancarlo Stanton, DH
6. Jazz Chisholm, 3B
7. Jasson Domínguez, LF
8. Ben Rice, 1B
9. Anthony Volpe, SS

Trevino, Verdugo, Berti, Cabrera, Duke Ellis

So no Grisham for them.

Gerrit Cole, RHP
Carlos Rodón, LHP
Luis Gil, RHP

Clarke Schmidt, RHP
Luke Weaver, RHP
Tommy Kahnle, RHP
Jake Cousins, RHP
Ian Hamilton, RHP
Clay Holmes, RHP
Tim Hill, LHP
Mark Leiter Jr., RHP
Tim Mayza, LHP

Leiter over Stroman, think they might just go Stroman there to keep him happy and also as an emergency long guy.

He wants to play but he couldn’t hit even when he had ten working fingers.

Rizzo in September: .345 OBP and .660 OPS.
Cabrera in September: .357 OBP and .717 OPS.
Rice in August, since he only had one game in September (0 for 3 with 2k): .171 OBP and .228 OPS.

Until Rice can sustain some success at the MLB level, I think we have to assume that he still needs to figure things out.

Probably doesn't matter though, Rizzo is hurt. I think the right answer is Cabrera unless the organization is concerned about his defense. He has 71 innings there in his career with most of them this season (57.1). DRS of 0 with slightly above average range. FWIW, Rice's defense grades out as similar to Cabrera's with more innings (0 DRS, slightly above average range). But drawing firm conclusions with defensive stats based on small sample sizes isn't a good idea, so the assessment that really matters is what the coaching staff thinks after working with these guys up close.

It will be interesting to see what they do.

If Rizzo can play, I vote for him just because of his defense and presence.

Oswaldo freaks me out over there for some reason and Rice obviously had a great season in the minors but I don't know if I trust him on this stage.

Rizzo has broken fingers, I will be pissed off if he takes a roster spot.

I think it will be this plus Grisham minus Leiter, 11 pitchers is plenty with all the off days.

Also I think Jazz and Wells flip, Jazz at 4 and Wells at 6, at least for game 1.

Yeah, only needing three SP creates a good opportunity to have more position players to pinch hit and to able to exploit matchups caused by the three batter minimum. So at least they'll be able to replace one crappy hitter with another crappy hitter batting from the better side, if they want.
