Presumably he bumps Jeff Francis as the last guy in the pen?

"The New York Yankees today announced they have acquired LHP Chris Capuano from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for cash considerations.
Capuano, 35, was signed as a free agent by the Rockies on July 4, and made four combined starts with Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Colorado Springs, posting a 1-0 record with a 2.79 ERA (19.1IP, 16H, 6ER, 5BB, 21K, 2HR). Earlier this year, he went 1-1 with a 4.55 ERA (31.2IP, 34H, 16ER, 15BB, 29K, 3HR) in 28 relief appearances with Boston before being released on July 1."

Actually thinking about it more, he might bump Whitley from the rotation and Whitley would bump Francis from the pen. Whitley pitched well in his start a few days ago, but got hammered 4-5 times in a row before that and is at a career innings high already.

I'm thinking Francis stays and Whitley goes.  As you mention, recent performance + innings.  Francis is a southpaw too.

Yet another Sox cast-off who'll somehow morph into a superhero and kick Boston's ass down the stretch.

Just wait. He'll toss 7 innings of 2-hit ball at them during one of the upcoming series, most likely during the game that eliminates the Sox from the wild card race.

Why would it take a superhero right now?

They have Huff and Thornton already, and Whitley looked really good in his one relief outing before Tanaka got hurt.

They are still carrying one too many relievers, which is especially crazy with Tex unavailable, so I'm guessing Francis is gone soon too. They freed up a spot for Capuano by dumping Chris Leroux, who was up as an emergency innings guy after the 14 inning game the other night.

FWIW... Friends of friends state he was a NYY fan growing up (got this from when he was first coming up in the majors).

ok how about the Ny Post?  :)

  :bill-throwing:

Capuano grew up in Springfield, Mass., which he described as a town divided in half by Yankees and Red Sox fans. Getting close to home was one reason he signed with Boston.
Now he’ll be on the other side of the rivalry, even if Capuano admittedly rooted for the Red Sox growing up. His dad, Frank, is a Yankees fan, though. He’ll be in the stands on Saturday.
