New BA top 100 list is out today, 5 Yankees. Nice to see Pereira get some respect, and people always overlook Wells because he is slightly older and unclear whether he can stick at C but the bat is legit.

Anthony Volpe #14
Oswald Peraza #62
Jasson Dominguez #67
Everson Pereira #78
Austin Wells #94

I'd like to see the Yankees maybe use Wells like Daulton Varsho. Some time behind the plate, some time in LF.

Is that accurate? Someone posted this on reddit but had Volpe at #16. I don't have a paid sub to BA

I just cut and pasted from someone’s Twitter post. Honestly I don’t like BA very much, I don’t subscribe there either.

Yeah, the BP list (a few weeks old) is interesting by comparison, Wells all the way down at #13 because they think he is an eventual DH:

Top 10:

1. Anthony Volpe
2. Oswald Peraza
3. Spencer Jones
4. Jasson Dominguez
5. Will Warren
6. Randy Vasquez
7. Luis Gil
8. Everson Pereira
9. Drew Thorpe
10. Trey Sweeney

Either way, with the five guys on the BA top 100 plus Jones, Sweeney, Arias, and Mayea, it's as exciting a group of position player prospects as I can remember NY ever having.

Kiley McDaniel's top 100 list is out, he loves the NY position players:

Volpe 3
Dominguez 28
Peraza 34
Wells 58
Sweeney 88

Pereira as an honorable mention, and that's not even including Spencer Jones, who I think might end up as the best of those guys, plus recent international signees Arias and Mayea.

Also Volpe at 3 means he will essentially be #1 a week into the season when Henderson and Carroll both graduate (both are already close to the 130 PAs needed).

Exciting!!!

Is Dominguez still another year away? I have no idea what to make of him, but he seems legit.
He turns 20 later this week, he got to AA at the very end of last season. I wouldn't rule him out for the second half of this season but 2024 seems a lot more likely.

Also a big article in today's Athletic on my man Spencer Jones:

"He’s 6-foot-7 and left-handed, ran the third-best 30-yard dash in 3.6 seconds at the MLB combine, posted a 1.103 OPS his junior year at Vanderbilt, and then continued that success in A-ball last season with the Tampa Tarpons, slashing .325/.411/.494 all while playing an exceptional center field. It’s why the Yankees believe he’s one of the most well-rounded prospects in the system."

Thanks for that link. He sounds like a tremendous ballplayer and an even better person. Looking forward to following him this year.

Kiley McDaniel has NY 4th (!!!) on his farm system rankings, pretty incredible after they traded so many pitchers last season. He has them behind just BAL, ARI and CLE, meaning they’re ahead of LAD, TB, PIT just to name a few.

Keith Law's NY top 20 is out today, it's really badly done and I'm not reposting it here or initiating any discussion about it. I hope The Athletic hires someone better to do prospects sooner rather than later.

He had I think 5 Yankees on his top 100 and really had a lot of nice things to stay about Volpe and Dominguez in particular.

4 on the top 100 but honestly literally every other person doing a top 20 or top 30 from NY’s system seems better informed about it, professionals and amateurs alike.

Tough break (no pun intended). I've been excited about our Wells and BR but seems like neither have a real chance to show off for awhile.

Wells is still a question defensively, it’s not clear how he fits into NY’s future, healthy or not.

AAA season starts today for NY, in which Peraza tries to put pressure on NY from below. The other affiliates start next week.

Fun night so far:

Spencer Jones has two more HRs (OPS of 1.744).

Florial is back and leading off in AAA, he has a HR.

Andres Chaparro got promoted to AAA to start the season after a great stretch run in AA and an impressive spring training, and started off 0-29. He has homered three times since (two tonight) but is still hitting just .091 with a .531 OPS.

With Pereira and Dominguez already in AA, I wonder if they'd consider just vaulting Jones straight to AAA in the next month or two if he keeps this up.

Heh.

I was wondering similar after your Jones update the other day. Would love to see him in AAA before the end of the season.

Was daydreaming about him somehow getting a shot in LF with the big league club, though I know that will never happen.

I don't think anything is completely out of the question until he is challenged at some level:

Drafted July 2022 (#25 in the first round)
Three games in early August in rookie ball (1.445 OPS)
22 games in August-September in low A (.905 OPS in 95 PAs)
Started this year in high A (1.695 OPS in 22 PAs)

Oddly looks like Domiguez has been as bad as Jones has been good

No way. AA is the biggest jump besides AAA to MLB. Skipping High A is one thing, skipping AA is very silly barring extreme park factor concerns.

Update: Now 8 for his last 20 with 6 HRs in the last 5 games.

The list of the top 2024 IFA prospects (signing in Jan 2024) came out on BA today, NY is not connected to any of the top guys this time but rumor has it that they will be landing the top kid in Jan 2025, SS Wandy Asigen.

As always with these 12-13 year old kids (gross!), there is very little info about him on the web as of now.

Yeah, he's almost too good to be true. An OF of Judge, Dominguez and Jones by late 2024 or 2025 is the dream...

I'm bummed that the one Hudson Valley game I've been able to go to, Jones didn't do anything of note (other than nearly behead a first baseman with a screaming line drive that the dude caught an inch away from his face). Hoping against hope that the Yankees let him marinate in High A a little longer and into the summer so I can see him when it's nice out.

Austin Wells missed most of spring training injured, and finally got back to AA (where he was last year) last week. Tonight is his sixth game this year in AA and he has homered in the last 4, 4 HRs in 22 ABs and a 1.168 OPS.

Somerset playing in Portland this week. The Martian crushed one last night in Portland. Hitting .184 now with OPS nearly .800. They play again tonight. Wells is such a valuable prospect, being a catcher certainly puts him on another level. Can’t wait to see both Wells and Dominguez in the big leagues late next summer.

Spencer Jones missed a few games for an unannounced non-injury reason, came back on Friday and has gone 8-13 in a bit under three games this weekend with four doubles and a HR. He probably should be promoted soon, but Dominguez and Pereira are both already at AA and neither has earned a promotion to AAA quite yet.

NY's minor league offenses all went nuts today after their normal Monday off, all four won and many of the top prospects homered:

AAA: 14-5
AA: 14-10
high A: 9-6
low A: 12-7

Dominguez with 3 hits and 4 runs scored in AA, OPS up to .806, 13 SB in 29 games, 1 CS.

Spencer Jones homered again to lead off the game in high A, OPS up to .973, 10 SBs in 27 games, 1 CS.
