Brilliant start for Clarke Schmidt today in his second AA start, 6.2 2 0 0 0 9 on 92 pitches.

According to my espn fantasy app, Deivi will work out of the bullpen the rest of the season, potentially in preparation for a September call up.

Yeah, also to keep down his innings, but yeah. He had his first relief appearance tonight behind a very strong start by Mike King, they had 16 Ks of Pawtucket between them:

"Final line on Deivi Garcia: 2+ ip, 3 h, 1 r, 1 er, 0 bb, 5 k. 41 pitches, 30 strikes.

One of the hits was an infield single, another took a handful of hops to sneak between third and short, then the last was a double that fell in just ahead of Ryan McBroom’s slide in right."

This is good news, they didn't lose Acevedo after dropping him from the 40 man. They did this with Domingo German at one point when he was coming up also, that worked out quite nicely for NY in the end.

"Heard that Domingo Acevedo is back with #Yankees organization on a new minor-league contract after getting released other day. He’s on MiLB IL."

Keith Law tends to be very sparing with his praise of minor league SPs, so this is very effusive for him, it also doesn't mention King or Yajure, two guys not as highly rated who have had great results so far.

================

Otto Adamvino
: With Deivi Garcia, Schmidt, Gil & Medina all looking good lately, has the Yanks’ minor-league pitching taken a step forward overall this season? Do you project any/all of those four to be good MLB starters?

Keith Law: Garcia is the highest probability starter of the group for me. I’d project Schmidt to start, with some caveats about his durability. Medina probably has the highest ceiling, based on pure stuff and delivery, but the shortest track record of adequate performance (he’s been great recently, a complete turnaround from everything that came before). You didn’t mention Roansy Contreras, who I also think is a definite starter, or Luis Gil, more likely a reliever than the others in the group but nonzero starter potential. So yeah, pretty solid crop.

Chris Gittens, a power-hitting 25 year old 1B who was a 12th round pick in 2014, just got named the Eastern League MVP. He is leading the league in a bunch of categories including OPS (.889). Ryan McBroom at AAA and Gittens at AA are more reasons that Mike Ford's road to sticking with NY is extremely tough, although this week's hot streak did probably save his 40 man spot through the season at least.

Also NY lost their secondary highly touted international signing Jhon Diaz as they couldn't come up with the extra international signing allowance and today he signed with TB instead.

Ford and Gittens get a boost as Ryan McBroom (leading the IL in OPS) was just traded to KC for international spending money and a PTBNL. McBroom was the player NY got in 2017 from Toronto in exchange for the much discussed mediocrity Rob Refsnyder.

And today NY traded my man JP Feyereisen to the Brewers for more international spending cap space plus a 16 year old who the Brewers just signed this summer.

The remnants of the Yankee and Mets AAA teams are currently playing a one game playoff to see who makes the actual playoffs, pretty wild game. Since the Yankees traded McBroom and promoted Encarnacion, Scranton had to start Erik Kratz at 1B and it's mostly a team of no-names. Adonis Rosa got shelled in the 1st and gave up 5 runs while getting two outs, and Syracuse held a 6-1 lead through 6 (Deivi Garcia with three impressive innings in the middle here, it should be noted.).

So, 6-1 after 6, Syracuse scores 1 in the top of the 7th and it's 7-1. Higashioka leads off the 7th with a HR and Scranton scores 4 more, so they've cut it to 7-6 after 7.

Then in the 8th inning, Syracuse bats go wild again and add 6 more, 13-6 lead. Higashioka again leads off the inning with a HR and Scranton proceeds to score 8 (!!) and take a 14-13 lead, which is where it is now, Scranton still batting.

Of course the Yankees just traded Feyereisen who would be in for the save attempt, maybe Ben Heller gets the call.

TL/DR: Scranton just scored 13 runs in the 7th and 8th to take a 14-13 lead in a do or die game for both teams.

Heller comes in, gets the side 1-2-3 and Scranton makes the playoffs! Insane comeback.

His season is presumably over, but the Fangraphs guys bumped Luis Medina up from 40 to 45 as a prospect, 50 puts you into the top 110 or so prospects in baseball. If he starts off next season like he finished this one, he should shoot up that list quickly.

Also I just noticed how high Fangraphs is on NY's crop of teenage position players. Loaisiga should graduate from the prospects list shortly, so I'll ignore him, and then 5 of NY's top 7 prospects are position players under 19 (and #8 is Anthony Seigler, who just turned 20).

#1 Jasson Dominguez, age 16.6, 2019 J2
#4 Kevin Alcantara, age 17.1, 2018 J2
#5 Alexander Vargas, age 17.8, 2018 J2
#6 Antonio Cabello, 18.8, 2017 J2
#7 Everson Pereira, 18.4, 2017 J2

NY is still not good at drafting overall, especially in the first round, but that is a really nice job refilling the talent via international signings. If 2 or 3 of those 5 blossom as expected, that is a huge boost for NY.

Scranton gets stomped by Durham in game 1 of the AAA playoffs, no surprise as Scranton has lost a lot of players from promotion or trades or injury.

Trenton drew PHI's AA team Reading in the first round, game 1 was supposed to be an exciting showdown between Clarke Schmidt and Spencer Howard (who the Phillies have considered promoting to the bigs in recent weeks, even though he only has 30 innings above high A. Jordan Montgomery's rehab got in the way, though, so it was Montgomery/Howard instead. Howard was dominant, 7 2 1 1 2 12, and Montgomery was only OK and hurt himself with an error, 3 5 2 2 0 5, and Howard left after 7 with a 3-1 lead. But in the meantime, Schmidt came in and was fantastic, an unearned run in his first inning, but overall 6 2 1 0 1 4 on just 74 pitches, giving Trenton a chance to come back against the bullpen, which is what they did, 4-3 Trenton win. Schmidt retired the last 11 batters he faced, essentially getting his own save in a one run game.

Schmidt has now had four games since moving to AA, he got hit in the first one but the last three have been scoreless with very few hits allowed:

19.2 7 1 0 1 18

Not sure if he'll get another start this year, but he is quickly moving into both top 100 prospect contention and a candidate for NY's rotation in late 2020, although innings will be an issue for him next year (he is at 97 now).

Check out NY’s plan for the AA championship series, quite the loaded staff here:

Here’s the projected Thunder rotation for ELCS vs. Bowie #Thunder
Game 1: Jordan Montgomery (followed by Dellin Betances then Stephen Tarpley)
Game 2: Luis Severino (followed by Miguel Yajure)
Game 3: Clarke Schmidt
Game 4: Michael King

Game 3 of the AA Eastern League championship series is going on now, Trenton and Bowie (BAL affiliate) are tied at 1 game apiece. Tonight it was 1-1 through 6, Trenton loaded the bases with no one out but were in danger of stranding all three, two outs and two strikes on the hitter and then this happened:

View: https://twitter.com/MaxWildstein/status/1172312482746007553

So it's 2-1 now in the 8th, Michael King is in his third inning out of the pen.

That was the winning run, 2-1 final. Clarke Schmidt and King both pitched great, 8.2 3 1 1 4 14 combined (James Reeves got the final out of the 5th in between).

BA's top 20 SAL prospect list is out, this is the 14 team league that has Charleston in it, NY's low A team. NY put 4 pitchers in the top 15 overall prospects, plus Canaan Smith at #20. This is impressive, as JJ Cooper of BA said in his intro to his chat:

"I know I say this every year, but cracking the Sally League Top 20 is very hard. It's a massive league, so there are always way more prospects than 20 spots."

Roansy Contreras-#12
Alex Vizcaino-#13
Luis Gil-#14
Luis Medina-#15
Canaan Smith-#20

Luckily only Gil and Medina have to be protected this winter, Contreras and Vizcaino next year.

Appalachian:

# 5 Antonio Cabello..18 OF RHH 5-10

# 7 Anthony Volpe...18 SS RHH 5-11

# 9 Yoendrys Gomez...19 RHP 6-3 (I believe the top pitching prospect in the league)

GCL:

#5 Antonio Gomez...17 C 6-2

#8 Kevin Alcantara...17 OF 6-6

#9 Alexander Vargas...17 SS 5-11

So 19 NY prospects on the BA lists in total, but only 3 of those for the highest three affiliates, which shows you why NY's overall system is not rated so highly currently, but there is a ton of talent percolating upwards. A lot of those guys finished really strong this year though and have already jumped to the next level, the pitchers especially should be hitting top 200 and 100 lists soon if they keep it up next season.

Prospects365 top 200 MLB prospects list out today, 10 Yankees on there:

38 Jasson Dominquez
46 Deivi Garcia
74 Estevan Florial
105 Clarke Schmidt
114 Luis Gil
129 Luis Medina
175 Kevin Alcantara
177 Alexander Vargas
188 Canaan Smith
197 Ezequiel Duran

That jump for Schmidt/Gil/Medina is big, and there are others poised to make similar leaps (Roansy Contreras, Miguel Yajure, Alex Vizcaino).

BP put out their top 10 NY prospect list today, pretty odd list IMO. Most prospect analysis has dropped Abreu way down, he still has the talent but has not been able to harness it and time is getting shorter for him. Volpe is also too high IMO, the list in the previous post is much better.

  1. Deivi Garcia, RHP
  2. Jasson Dominguez, OF
  3. Albert Abreu, RHP
  4. Luis Medina, RHP
  5. Luis Gil, RHP
  6. Anthony Volpe, SS
  7. Estevan Florial, OF
  8. Ezequiel Duran, 2B
  9. Clarke Schmidt, RHP
  10. Kevin Alcantara, OF
Edit: Signing up for BP's free membership level gives you access to their 11-20 here, so I just did that.

11. Roansy Contreras
12. Yoendrys Gomez
13. Mike King
14. TJ Sikkema
15. Frank German
16. Antonio Cabello
17. Anthony Seigler
18. Josh Stowers
19. Josh Smith
20. Alexander Vizcaino

Also their top talents 25 and under list is interesting, note that Andujar and Clint Frazier would likely both be top 50 overall prospects if still eligible:

Top Talents 25 and Under:
  1. Gleyber Torres
  2. Deivi Garcia
  3. Miguel Andujar
  4. Clint Frazier
  5. Jasson Dominguez
  6. Albert Abreu
  7. Luis Medina
  8. Luis Gil
  9. Anthony Volpe
  10. Estevan Florial

FWIW because I am a loon, I made my own top 30 NY minor league prospect list recently, so I'll post it here and look back sometime as to how it compares to the 'official' lists. 8. Roansy Contreras, RHP
9. Everson Pereira, OF
10. Anthony Volpe, SS

11. Yoendrys Gomez, RHP
12. Antonio Cabello, OF

Also interestingly they say in the chat (going on now) that they think the top 5 here will likely end up in their top 101 overall.

Yuri (Israel): I'm not sure what's more exciting: Yankees system day or another chat hosted by someone other than Craig. Anyway, will Anthony Volpe make the top 101?

New York Yankees Top 10 Chat: Our long list is I think 206 names at the moment and the top eight are all on it. I'd say the top two are locks, the next three are probably but not locks, Volpe is probably not but maybe, and Florial and Duran are more 150ish. That is mostly a guess as I haven't even done more than roughly tier it out yet, and this stuff is fluid for another few weeks.

I don't know how anyone could not put Dominguez No. 1 in the system.
I mean, he is 16 and yet to play in the US and almost no one has seen him yet, so I get it. That being said, he is first on my own list above. :)
