I think Cashman's last major offseason move will be one more guy here, I think Jordan Hicks is the best fit, but also I could see Robert Stephenson or maybe a Keynan Middleton reunion.

Hicks and Stephenson off the board, Middleton and Hector Neris (who will be pricy, 2/24?) still around.

Also a Wandy reunion has been rumored, and (my idea) old buddy David Robertson is still very good at 38, very curious to see which way Cashman goes or if he even tries to sign two (Middleton/Robertson combo?). Again this is a case where NY I think would actually prefer a two year deal to a one year deal with all of Holmes, Loaisiga and Kahnle hitting FA, but of course that only works if it is the right guy.

Nick Burdi with a lot of early buzz, he has had two Tommy John surgeries plus thoracic outlet (!!!), but check out this quote from today:

“Aaron Boone was asked about Nick Burdi. He shook his head & laughed/smirked before adding, "You talk about stuff. I mean, that's great stuff."

Boone emphasized the arm slot that Burdi was throwing 98-100 mph from. “

Thanks to @JM3 for this link, people can't stop talking about how impressive Burdi's stuff is and here you can see why. He will almost certainly make the team, and there's still one more open relief spot probably since Kahnle is slow to ramp up and will likely miss Opening Day.

I still like De Los Santos but he missed the start of camp for some reason and has only pitched once so far, and it didn't go well (although better than the box score looks). Dennis Santana has impressed also, early on.

Came here to see the reaction to Burdi's spring. This blurb caught my eye:

It’s not often a 31-year-old journeyman-type pitcher stands out in spring training but that’s what Burdi has done this spring with the Yankees. His stuff is overpowering but he’s rarely been healthy over the past decade; when he has pitched, he’s logged high strikeout and walk rates. He has a 98 to 100 mph fastball from a lower arm slot to go with a slider and changeup. He’s had two Tommy John surgeries and a surgery to address thoracic outlet syndrome, so health concerns will always be there, but he’s struck out seven and walked one in three innings this spring as he tries to win a spot in the bullpen.

NY is still playing games with the back end of their roster. Today they added human white flag Tanner Tully to the MLB roster and DFAd Nick Ramirez, who turns 35 this summer but was pretty good for NY in 40+ innings last season.

Ian Hamilton is NY's best reliever right now. Three games so far, this is his combined line:

5.2 1 0 0 0 7

On just 61 total pitches! All three appearances have been close NY wins, 5-3, 5-4, 6-5.

How did NY get Hamilton? Minor league FA signing in Feb 2023, who forced his way onto the team last spring and hasn't stopped being great since. He makes 900K this year and NY has control of him through 2028.

NY only got him originally because he couldn’t stay healthy and the Giants released him.

“ He did not pitch in 2014 and 2015 due to injuries, and the Giants released him on May 30, 2015.“

NY signed him in early 2016.

This is his last year of control so his NY career could be over, too bad because he is generally so good when healthy.

NY has been flying through relievers trying to figure out their bullpen, so this badly needs an update.

Today NY sent down Marinaccio (to get a fresh arm) and DFAd Victor Gonzalez (a bit surprising as he has team control through 2026, but also he isn't anything special). They brought up Yoendrys Gómez to get length if they needed it, and also Phil Bickford who they signed in April and who has been solid in AAA. Asterisks mean not on the 40 man:

Effross is pitching in rehab games, so hopefully not too far away. Hamilton and Burdi hopefully not out too long, Loaisiga and Trivino I think are out for most or all of the season.

Gomez stays up and Cody Morris got blasted in AAA tonight, so good call by NY there.

Tonight NY signed old buddy Chasen Shreve to a minor league deal. Even though NY traded him back in 2018, he is still just 33, a bit younger than Tim Hill. I think Hill is on a short leash (although Cashman has long wanted him) and Shreve will be next up there, 2nd lefty spot behind Ferguson.

Shreve has spent this year so far with Texas’ AAA team, opting out last week with dominant numbers, .113 BAA in 20 games (22.1 innings, 8 hits).

You mean eventually, right, not for tomorrow? I think Yoendrys Gomez will probably be second pitcher in tomorrow in most situations and he will go as long as possible.

Nest time they need someone, Effross is healthy but shaking the rust off in AAA, Marinaccio has a sub-2 ERA, Burdi is I think close to rehab games, Chasen Shreve and Tim Mayza are both non-40 veteran lefty options, and Jack Neely is the exciting internal candidate, a 6'8" righty who was an 11th round pick in 2021. He has 63 Ks in 40.2 innings between AA/AAA this season.

Honestly, what you posted doesn't sound too bad at all even if Cashman can't trade for an upgrade. Plenty of guys with good major league experience. I'm looking forward to Effross in particular.

Reinforcements are coming. Grind out some more wins, don't fall too far behind Baltimore, and let's see what happens.

Could be fun.

Shreve saw the logjam laid out above and took an August 1 optout, back on the market. He has allowed just a .127 BAA in two AAA stints this year now, TEX/NYY, just 14 hits allowed in 33.1 innings in 30 games. Someone should give him a shot.

De Los Santos DFAd, he got a shot but was really awful.

Will Warren is taking the spot today as they need a 6th starter, presumably tomorrow he will go down and one of Marinaccio or Effross or Burdi will join the team.

Also, Lou Trivino is starting a rehab assignment in AA today, more tough moves coming (maybe some phantom IL stints to keep control of players).

Huh, Tim Mayza gets the call to NY (actually DET) today, that is somewhat shocking. I guess NY wanted a second lefty? He does have options, but Effross and Burdi and Marinaccio have to be getting a bit frustrated. Maybe the plan is that Mayza is up for the weekend, then they option him down for one of those righties after the series, as he does have options left somehow.

No firm decisions on this situation will be made until final week or 10 days of regular season. Nothing written in stone yet. Not sure why Nestor’s name came up first but he does throw strikes, which is a priority in the playoffs.

Oh, sorry, I did read your post wrong, I thought you meant it was surprising that he was a bit irritated.

But they don't want to go to a six man rotation, so someone has to sit out each time. Cole and Rodon aren't going anywhere, Gil and Schmidt are just back and they want to see what they have, so that leaves Stroman and Cortes.

Cortes is actually a great fit for the bullpen if all six are healthy as their lefty relievers haven't been good all year and Cortes does have some prior bullpen experience. Stroman is the one who is likely to get pissed when there is no real role for him on a postseason roster.

NY needed a 40 man spot because Poteet's rehab stint is over and they DFAd Ron Marinaccio. A bit surprising but pretty clearly they no longer trusted him.

Marinaccio showed great promise when he first came up and I think is fully capable of being successful in spots now, but is basically fungible with what the team has available to them.

I won't be surprised at all if he catches on with another team and carves out a modest MLB career.
