Abreu (out of options) and Cordero (possibly out of options? unclear, differing reports) have both made the Opening Day roster, so I think it is:

Greg Weissert or maybe Matt Krook?
Albert Abreu
Jimmy Cordero
Michael King
Ron Marinaccio
Wandy Peralta
Jonathan Loaisiga
Clay Holmes

IL: Tommy Kahnle, Lou Trivino

So, NY's last minute bullpen acquisition was Colten Brewer, who TB did not have room for on their team so they had to let him go to NY. He is 30 years old, was in the NY minor league system in 2017, then SD in 2018, BOS 2019-2021, nowhere really last year, signed by TB as a minor league FA in Dec. He is a 6'4" righty who is out of options and who has very good stuff, with sick numbers this spring (9.1 4 1 0 3 15).

Colten Brewer
Albert Abreu
Jimmy Cordero
Michael King
Ron Marinaccio
Wandy Peralta
Jonathan Loaisiga
Clay Holmes

IL: Tommy Kahnle, Lou Trivino

AAA: Greg Weissert, Matt Krook, Ian Hamilton (has an opt-out on April 5 if he wants).

Brewer has some great Stuff+ numbers, so maybe it's just a question of tweaking his pitch usage and of course throwing strikes.

Stuff+
  • Slider: 114.3
  • Cutter: 116.7
  • Curveball: 117.4

NY is currently carrying 9 relievers, 4 of them Cashman has picked up in the past year off waivers for nothing.

Jimmy Cordero-March 2022
Albert Abreu-June 2022
Ian Hamilton-January 2023
Colten Brewer-March 2023

These four have made six combined appearances in NY's first 5 games, combining for a line of 9.2 6 0 0 3 11.

Good job Cashman!!!

On the downside, Michael King is struggling a bit after returning from injury, hopefully just rust but he had some velocity issues yesterday, which he says are mechanical and he is totally healthy. We'll see.

Brewer and Hamilton with 99 pitches between them, think they have to send down Schmidt or Brito and bring up a fresh multi-inning option, not just for Friday coverage but Saturday too.

Krook pitched one inning in AAA tonight, struck out the side on 12 pitches. He hadn't pitched in six days and is stretched out to at least 3-4 innings, so my guess is that was so he didn't get rusty and he is still the frontrunner to come up tomorrow, Schmidt or Brito down. Deivi Garcia is also possible as a multi-inning option, both he and Krook are on the 40 man already, Weissert is too but he is more of a one inning guy. Weissert has pitched in 5 AAA games so far, 5.1 innings, 4-4 in saves, and just one hit allowed.

Weissert has about 100 innings in AA/AAA since 2021, mostly in AAA. This is his combined line since 2021:

102.2 54 23 19 47 137, 1.67 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, 12 K/9, 28 for 31 in save opportunities. Too many walks, but yowza!!

He turned 28 in February, has been consistently great in AAA since he was 26. He got a bit of a chance down the stretch for NY in 2022, had two terrible games early on but a 1.50 ERA in his final 8 appearances there too, from early Sept-early Oct. That must be so frustrating, you are 28 and have been great in AAA since 2021, but guys keep jumping you because they don't have options and Cashman needs to stockpile depth.

With Effross and Trivino and Gil and Loaisiga all out basically the whole season so far, plus Cordero suspended, NY's MLB relief depth has been tested and the relief options in AAA are ugly currently, 5 relievers on the 40 man in AAA currently:

1) Matt Krook: 28 year old lefty with incredible AAA numbers, has been called up a few times and mostly ignored, but hit hard when finally used. But just 8 hits allowed in 25.2 AAA innings, I would like to see more of him when needed.

2) Deivi Garcia: Of course first called up at just 21 in 2020, he is now a fringe 40 man guy who has come up for two solid emergency long relief fill-ins for NY this year, but been bad in AAA the whole season (4.74 ERA in 38 innings).

3) Greg Weissert: He has looked promising at times too but his stuff moves so much that he can't really control it. He blew tonight's AAA game by allowing 3 in the 9th in a 10-8 loss, still optimistic but he is also 28 already and unreliable right now.

4-5): Lastly Matt Bowman and Anthony Misiewicz, both recent 40 man additions. I find it hard to believe NY does not have better non-40 man internal options than these two if it comes to that. For instance, Edgar Barclay has been dominant in AA (and high A last year) and has been stretching out, 5 innings/60 pitches last time, NY does not really have a long guy currently.
