Chris Martin back in AAA tonight, three ground balls in his inning, hitting 94-95 consistently. NY desperately needs him back.

So with Carpenter being DFAd and NY inexplicably holding onto the remnants of Capuano in the pen, NY is currently carrying 5 lefties and 2 righties (Betances, Rogers) in the pen. I wonder if any team has ever carried 5 bullpen lefties before September roster expansion before this, that seems incredibly rare. Chad Jennings talks about it here:

Martin has been activated off the DL, but was optioned to AAA instead of being brought back to NY. I think what happened was they were going to activate him but then he gave up a couple of runs in a AAA outing (on Monday), so they want him to have a few good outings before bringing him back. His first since then was tonight, a scoreless inning. Really they should DFA Capuano and keep Lindgren up, but who knows.

NY signs Sergio Santos to a minor league deal. He spent a good part of the year with the Dodgers and pitched well except for one horrendous outing, then he got caught in a numbers game and opted for FA when LA tried to send him to AAA. I'm guessing he won't have to prove himself much in AAA before being called up as the second RH reliever NY so desperately needs.

Well, that made tonight worth it then. Santos will be the move, I guess?

Sergio Santos to the DL, Chris Martin back to AAA, Bryan Mitchell and Brandon Pinder up.

Ah, there's supposed to be some crazy rain here tomorrow and maybe Sunday, so maybe Mitchell is an emergency long guy in case of a lengthy rain delay mid-game.

Maybe Mitchell is getting a crack at Martin's job? Warren also coming over to the pen this week.

They need someone stretched out as a 6th starter, though, so if that's not going to be Mitchell, I guess it's going to be Nova? They can't put Mitchell and Warren both into short relief and put Nova into the rotation, who would the 6th starter be then? Kyle Davies? Yikes. I guess Severino is a short-term possibility.

Burawa and DePaula back down, Diego Moreno and Nick Rumbelow called up for tomorrow. NY is being forced into using all of that AAA relief depth I talked about upthread, not many good answers so far.

Andrew Bailey is trying to come back from his latest injury, 1.1 0 0 0 1 2 in the GCL opener tonight.

The aforementioned Andrew Bailey has been quietly insanely good since coming back on June 22: 22.1 12 4 2 7 29, 0.80 ERA, 0.85 EHIP, 11.7 K/9.

Tonight he had a five out save against Pawtucket, 1.2 0 0 0 1 4

I'm guessing the plan has been for him to come up on Sept 1, but he is forcing NY's hand at this point.

Johnny Barbato, the guy NY got for Shawn Kelley last winter, spent most of the year relieving in AA with middling results. He got promoted to AAA anyway on July 23, and has been dominant ever since and has been pitching multi-innings recently, 3.1 perfect today. His AAA numbers are 22.2 12 1 1 8 22, a 0.40 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP. He will likely be in the mix to be on the AAA shuttle between Scranton and the Bronx next season.

I'm guessing this was more to stop another team from getting him. Not happening of course, but it would be nice with a staff of 5 inning starters

"According to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, the Yankees have claimed David Robertson off revocable waivers.

Now the Yankees and White Sox have until Monday at 2 p.m. ET to work something out. Heyman says there is "no evidence of trade talks between the teams," though New York would undoubtedly love a reunion with the 30-year-old reliever. Robertson has registered a 2.60 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, and 71/11 K/BB ratio in 52 innings this season for Chicago. He signed a four-year, $46 million free agent contract last winter."

Yeah, to make sure the Blue Jays specifically didn't get him.
