OK, I am going to take an early run at this just to give myself a general idea of what kind of crunch or non-crunch NY is looking at this year...

=============================

FAs:

Soto, Verdugo, Torres
Holmes, Kahnle, Loaisiga, Ferguson

=============================

Guys to add:

Hitters: Caleb Durbin, T.J. Rumfield, Ben Rice, Benjamin Cowles

Pitchers: Will Warren, Jack Neely

=============================

On the 40 man now but don't need to be protected: Jahmai Jones, Tonkin, Andrews, Cousins, Santana

=============================

So factoring in all of that, a quick attempt:

SP (12): Cole, Rodon, Stroman, Gil, Schmidt, Cortes, Brubaker, Poteet, Gomez, Warren, Beeter, Morris

RP (7): Weaver, Hamilton, Gonzalez, Burdi, Marinaccio, Effross, Neely

C (4): Trevino, Wells, Narvaez, Ramirez

IF (10): LeMahieu, Volpe, Berti, Cabrera, Peraza, Vivas, Durbin, Rice, Rumfield, Cowles

OF (4): Judge, Dominguez, Pereira, Grisham

DH (1): Stanton

=============================

So that is 38, not counting Rizzo who has a team option.

OK, so a reminder that this is trying to anticipate the 40 man after the season ends, before the Rule 5 draft.

I added Chisholm and Tonkin, I dropped Morris (who NY successfully ourighted off the 40 man and back to Scranton) and Ramirez.

Then I added Leiter and dropped Cowles and Neely.

Then I added De Los Santos.

================================

SP (11): Cole, Rodon, Stroman, Gil, Schmidt, Cortes, Brubaker, Poteet, Gomez, Warren, Beeter

RP (9): Weaver, Tonkin, Hamilton, Gonzalez, Burdi, Marinaccio, Effross, Leiter, De Los Santos

C (3): Trevino, Wells, Narvaez

IF (10): Chisholm, LeMahieu, Volpe, Berti, Cabrera, Peraza, Vivas, Durbin, Rice, Rumfield

OF (4): Judge, Dominguez, Pereira, Grisham

DH (1): Stanton

=============================

Still at 38, not counting Rizzo who has a team option.

NY has dropped all of Gonzalez, De Los Santos and Tonkin since the above, looks like they will have plenty of flexibility this offseason (as of now anyway).

Burdi and Marinaccio both gone now too, let's do an update:

SP (11): Cole, Rodon, Stroman, Gil, Schmidt, Cortes, Brubaker, Poteet, Gomez, Warren, Beeter

RP (6): Weaver, Hamilton, Effross, Leiter, Cousins, Mayza

C (3): Trevino, Wells, Narvaez

IF (10): Chisholm, LeMahieu, Volpe, Berti, Cabrera, Peraza, Vivas, Durbin, Rice, Rumfield

OF (4): Judge, Dominguez, Pereira, Grisham

DH (1): Stanton

=============================

I added Cousins and Mayza, but that is still just 35.

OK, an offseason bump:

Not much has changed from the above list, except that Duke Ellis, pinch-runner extraordinaire with two options left, is on the 40 man.

So at this moment NY's 40 man is at just 33, and that is including Cole still. They have just two guys on the 60 man currently (JT Brubaker they will keep, Lou Trivino who knows), and they will add Caleb Durbin and probably TJ Rumfield. Maybe some pitchers too?

Adding all four of the above and not dropping anyone else would still have NY at just 37. Last year Cashman kept the back end of the 40 man open over the winter to try to claim guys and then DFA them later, hoping no one will claim them, so NY can build AAAA depth. Not sure this almost ever ends up actually mattering, but fun for me to follow anyway. :)

Lou Trivino's option was declined, so NY is at 34 (including Brubaker) plus whoever they add to protect from the 40 man.

NY gets to 37, I am guessing these three could have declared minor league free agency if not added by today.

Durbin is the only prospect lock to be added, the others have already been added (Rice/Warren) or have been traded (Ramirez/Neely). Rumfield they could probably get away without protecting.

November me forgot about this Taylor Trammell post that August me made, now November me is a little more excited about that move (although I think he is out of options, same as Florial).

=============================

Taylor Trammell is not a prospect anymore as he is 26 and has been through a few organizations, but Cashman picked him up and stashed him in AAA in April, and he has gone nuts the last couple of weeks. He was a top 100 prospect four years running from 2018-21 (a bit like our own Estevan Florial), but hit a AAAA wall, similar to Florial.

Anyway, Trammell homered on July 28 for Scranton and hasn't stopped since, homering in 8 of the 12 games since then (!!!!), 8 HRs in his last 39 ABs. NY wants to get Dominguez everyday ABs in AAA for now, so Trammell might be ahead of him if NY needs a OF callup in August.

And I was excited about Yerry De Los Santos in February but he never got into a great groove in AAA and stayed there the whole year. Nice to know they have not given up on him, even if he is maybe a placeholder for now. Last February I wrote:

====================

Yerry De Los Santos: NY's bullpen looks full at the moment, also a bunch of guys on the 40 man who look like they will start in AAA, but of all the NRI relievers NY is bringing in, De Los Santos looks to me the most likely to push his way up the depth chart. He is still 26 and has an assignment clause for June 1 and a release clause for July 1, he pitched pretty well for PIT last year although he walked too many people. He has a hefty ground ball rate, a type of pitcher Matt Blake loves.

And Escarra is interesting, he is 29 and a career minor league journeyman catcher. NY signed him last January and he fought his way up to fourth string by the middle of the season. When Trevino was on the IL in July/August and Wells was playing every day for NY with Narvaez sitting behind him, Escarra was the one catching every day in AAA, every inning for two straight weeks.

Also Escarra is a 29 year old in AAA so he should be hitting, but he did, with a .930 OPS in 201 PAs in AAA down the stretch. NY has been producing a lot of catchers lately and I guess they didn't want someone grabbing Escarra without getting something in return.

Trammell is intriguing but he is out of options, so needs to stick on a MLB roster or be DFAd.

So NY is at 35 currently and Cashman likes to have a few spots open to claim and then quickly DFA guys hoping they go unclaimed to try to build AAAA depth (as I said already, this very rarely ends up actually impacting much, but I am into following it).

Mike Axisa's rule 5 protection thoughts from his pay newsletter (I don't always agree but recommended for Yankee fans, a lot of content, $3 per month for maybe 8-10 posts). Escarra was already added since he wrote this five days ago (although he missed Trammell and De Los Santos):

===================================================

Catchers: J.C. Escarra
  • Infielders: Caleb Durbin, Jesus Rodriguez, TJ Rumfield
  • Outfielders: none
  • Righties: Cole Ayers, Bailey Dees, Zach Messinger
  • Lefties: Oddanier Mosqueda

  • Durbin is a lock to be added to the 40-man roster. Ayers, Dees, and Messinger are all interesting pitch data guys who had success at Double-A this year, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see the Yankees protect one or two. You have to be careful not to stuff your 40-man with fringe prospects though. Roster spots are finite. Rodriguez is a personal favorite more than a serious Rule 5 Draft candidate.

    I’m not sure what to think about Rumfield, who performed well enough in Triple-A (.262/.365/.461 and 116 wRC+) and is a very good first base defender, but has iffy ball-tracking data (below average exit velocities, poor pulled fly ball rate, just okay swing decisions). That said, Rumfield is a candidate to get picked by a bad rebuilding team in the Rule 5 Draft, so the Yankees should probably protect him. If anything, they could always trade him later if they’re not sold on him as a big leaguer.

    Escarra and Mosqueda will be minor league free agents and thus have to go on the 40-man within five days of the end of the World Series, not at this deadline. I don’t think the Yankees will put either on the 40-man, but I thought they were worth a mention. Mosqueda is a lefty who had a 29.7 K% in Triple-A. Escarra is a lefty bat who slashed .261/.355/.434 (119 wRC+) with a 13.8 K% between Double-A and Triple-A. He frames well and he also plays the four corner positions. Hmmm.

Although, Cashman did get Jake Cousins last April in the first week of the season by agreeing to put him on the MLB roster right away. He was on the White Sox AAA team and either they had to promote him themselves or let him go, and they chose the latter.

So then Cashman gamed that by putting him on the team for a few days in April, but he had options and almost immediately got sent down until late June while they reworked his repertoire, then he got called back and became one of the more reliable guys for NY the rest of the way.

That's the only AAAA waiver guy he picked up who I can think of who had an impact, although he only really started doing it to this extent last offseason, previously they usually had a full 40 man most of the winter like everyone else.

Deadline to set the 40 man before the rule 5 is today at 6 PM EST. NY will add Caleb Durbin, possibly Zach Messinger, maybe no one else even though they're currently only at 35.

NY went with Durbin and C Jesus Rodriguez, who is 22 and was mostly in high A last year. So they’re at 37 now…

Pereira and Vivas were both supposed to be out of options but it was just announced both have an additional option year because they’ve been out so much. That’s a nice depth boost for NY.

I was looking at this earlier and thinking NY needed to move a catcher or two again, but I did not think it would be to help out BOS. Anyway, an update, NY is at 36:

=================

SP (12): Cole, Fried, Rodon, Stroman, Gil, Schmidt, Cortes, Brubaker, Poteet, Gomez, Warren, Beeter

RP (7): Weaver, Hamilton, Loaisiga, Effross, Leiter, Cousins, De Los Santos

C (4): Trevino, Wells, Escarra, Rodriguez

IF (8): Chisholm, LeMahieu, Volpe, Cabrera, Peraza, Durbin, Vivas, Rice

OF (4): Judge, Dominguez, Pereira, Grisham

DH (1): Stanton

=================

I wonder who the third string catcher is? Probably Ben Rice actually.

Great insight, but you have four catchers listed and a number 5 next to them (but I think you have the total correct).

Yeah, I just forgot to fix the number, thanks.

Also NY evidently loves JC Escarra, so he is likely the 3rd catcher currently.

Updated with the Trevino/Cruz deal, Alex Jackson could end up as the backup catcher but they don't need to add him to the 40 man unless he makes the team, so still just at 35:

RP (9): Williams, Weaver, Cruz, Hamilton, Loaisiga, Effross, Leiter, Cousins, De Los Santos

MLB.com actually has Jackson on the 40 man already, so I will add him and Goldschmidt, so NY is up to 37 now:

=================

SP (10): Cole, Fried, Rodon, Stroman, Gil, Schmidt, Brubaker, Gomez, Warren, Beeter

RP (9): Williams, Weaver, Cruz, Hamilton, Loaisiga, Effross, Leiter, Cousins, De Los Santos

NY added two more waiver wire pitchers, old buddy Roansy Contreras (NY traded him for Taillon in 2021, he is still just 25 but out of options) and Allan Winans from the Braves. It was unclear previously whether Alex Jackson had been added to the 40 man (he did not have to be but also he is the favorite for backup catcher currently) and now mlb.com does not list him, so NY is at 39 on the 40 man.

=================

SP (11): Cole, Fried, Rodon, Stroman, Gil, Schmidt, Brubaker, Gomez, Warren, Beeter, Contreras

RP (11): Williams, Weaver, Cruz, Hamilton, Loaisiga, Effross, Leiter, Cousins, Winans, Arias, De Los Santos

C (3): Wells, Escarra, Rodriguez

IF (8): Chisholm, Volpe, Goldschmidt, Cabrera, Peraza, Vivas, Rice, LeMahieu

OF (5): Judge, Bellinger, Dominguez, Pereira, Grisham

Alllan Winans cleared waivers, so NY got him off the 40 man and onto the Scranton roster, and he has an option left so could be useful. They also tried to clear Roansy Contreras (maybe to open a spot for Tim Hill, yet to be officially added?), but the Orioles claimed him, they also like to play this claim/DFA/stash game. Contreras is out of options so could be bouncing around more this spring.

Anyway, NY is at 39 now pending the addition of Hill.

=================

SP (11): Cole, Fried, Rodon, Stroman, Gil, Schmidt, Brubaker, Gomez, Warren, Beeter, White

RP (10): Williams, Weaver, Cruz, Hamilton, Loaisiga, Effross, Leiter, Cousins, Arias, De Los Santos

C (3): Wells, Escarra, Rodriguez

IF (9): Chisholm, Volpe, Goldschmidt, Cabrera, Peraza, Vivas, Rice, LeMahieu, Shewmake

Hill was officially added today, so back to 40.

Shewmake I’d guess is next on the DFA/hopefully to Scranton list, when needed.
