Starting this thread way too early, but it's because Mike Axisa took a look today (in his Patreon newsletter) at what prospects NY might have to protect next winter and for once there are not many essential additions. Axisa's list of the best possibilities:
  • Catchers: Josh Breaux
  • Infielders: Ezequiel Duran
  • Outfielders: Antonio Cabello, Anthony Garcia, Brandon Lockridge, Everson Pereira, Raimfer Salinas
  • Pitchers: Glenn Otto, Addison Russ, Matt Sauer
Breaux is the closest to the bigs of NY's catcher prospects, Duran is very highly regarded, Cabello, Pereira and Sauer all are very talented, but probably none are locks. Worth keeping in mind, and as always I will update this as we get closer.

Otto will need to be protected, 14 Ks in 5.1 innings in AA last night.

Bumping this in the wake of the PIT trade, you'll note that neither Park nor Castillo were on this list in January. Both are in the midst of superb breakout seasons, but clearly NY was not a strong believer in either, but both were rule 5 eligible this winter and could have been selected.

An updated list of guys NY could consider protecting:

Catchers: Josh Breaux
Infielders: Oswaldo Cabrera
Outfielders: Brandon Lockridge, Everson Pereira
Righties: Janson Junk, Barrett Loseke, Matt Sauer, Randy Vasquez
Lefties: None!
Minor league free agents: OF Trey Amburgey, IF Kyle Holder, C Donny Sands

======================================

I don't think there is anyone there who is completely essential, Pereira and Breaux maybe the most? NY has traded 10 guys for 4 this week, 7 would have needed to be on the 40 man versus 3 acquired who will be on there (and really just Gallo, the other two are seemingly pretty disposable fringe relievers). I will take a crack at the 40 man once we are past the deadline but it looks like Cashman has made quite a bit of space.

Yeah, pretty jealous of how Cashman's been dealing from the crunch, I'm hoping we'll see some of the same from Bloom today.

After a hectic last week for Yankee personnel moves, let's see where the 40 man stands post-deadline:

========================================

SP (9): Cole, Taillon, Montgomery, Germán, Heaney, Garcia, Gil, Medina, Gomez

RP (12): Chapman, Britton, Green, Loaisiga, Luetge, Holmes, Cortes, Rodriguez, Peralta, Abreu, Nelson, Kriske

C (2): Sanchez, Higashioka

IF (8): Torres, LeMahieu, Rizzo, Urshela, Voit, Wade, Gittens, Peraza

OF (9): Judge, Gallo, Stanton, Allen, Gardner, Andujar, Frazier, Florial, Amburgey

60 day IL, expected back this season sometime (4) (Severino, Kluber, Schmidt, King)

========================================

It's hard to see where NY will get 4 40 man spots for the pitchers expected back. Frazier and Andujar have both been out a month already, so maybe one or both could go to the 60 day. I hope Gittens is not on the chopping block, they need him next year as 1B depth, I think. Amburgey could go depending on who else is healthy, and a reliever or two if needed (Rodriguez has no options so he'd be low man for me currently).

OK, I am guessing NY's 40 man moves for the regular season are over, with the exception of Severino finally coming off the 60 day IL, presumably for Sal Romano. So let's assume that move and see where the 40 man should be at the end of the regular season.

========================================

SP (11): Cole, Taillon, Montgomery, Germán, Severino, Cortes, Schmidt, Gil, Garcia, Medina, Gomez

RP (10): Chapman, Britton, Green, Loaisiga, King, Holmes, Cortes, Peralta, Abreu, Nelson

C (2): Sanchez, Higashioka

IF (9): Torres, LeMahieu, Urshela, Voit, Wade, Odor, Gittens, Peraza, Velazquez

OF (7): Judge, Gallo, Stanton, Hicks, Andujar, Frazier, Florial

Options: O'Day, Rodriguez, Gardner

========================================

I think Everson Pereira and Stephen Ridings are the only must protects, maybe Randy Vazquez too. There are lots of other possibilities though, NY is likely going to lose guys again in the rule 5 though.

Andujar and Frazier probably need to finally go, especially if Gardner comes back again. Nick Nelson has been awful and they may not be able to wait on Yoendrys Gomez to develop, especially after he missed much of this season. Some of those mediocre infielders need to go too, maybe Odor. That is my initial very rough prediction, that is 40 (39 plus 3 guys with options plus Pereira/Ridings/Vazquez minus Andujar/Frazier/Nelson/Gomez/Odor).

Bump...

Mike Axisa got into this in his Patreon newsletter today, so a good time for me to bump this thread, rosters have to be set in about a month.

First of all, Axisa makes the good point that even though NY has had way more players taken in the past 5 years than any other team (13, 2nd place is 8), only 4 of those 13 have stuck with their new team and only Whitlock is a real loss (Luis Torrens has turned into a mediocre DH who catches occasionally). So this is generally much ado about very little, with the occasional big exception.

Above I listed Pereira, Ridings and Vazquez as guys who need to be added, Axisa agrees with those three and adds Cabrera (he came on very strong in AAA in the final two weeks) and Sands (if he is not added, he can become a FA and someone will grab him, same with Ridings). NY can maybe drop Velazquez and get him back on a minor league deal like BOS just did with Franchy, so that would give them another spot.

Anyway, NY needs to make some moves in the next month, as do most teams probably.

Two separate deadlines coming up:

Sunday, Nov. 7: Last day for option decisions and for guys to be activated from the 60 day IL.
Friday, Nov. 19: Rule 5 protection deadline, so for NY this year it will mean adding 4-5 prospects not there yet.

So first let's try to project how the 40 man will look after Sunday:

Two of three option situations resolved (Gardner/O'Day both FAs), the other is Joely Rodriguez with a $3M player option ($500K buyout). He is a LOOGY (.826 OPS allowed against RHH) in an age where LOOGYs have been banned, and he is out of minor league options, so I am guessing NY will not pick up this option either. Current 40 man is:

========================================

SP (11): Cole, Taillon, Montgomery, Germán, Severino, Cortes, Schmidt, Gil, Garcia, Medina, Gomez

RP (9): Chapman, Green, Loaisiga, King, Holmes, Cortes, Peralta, Abreu, Nelson

C (3): Sanchez, Higashioka, Brantly

IF (8): Torres, LeMahieu, Urshela, Wade, Odor, Gittens, Peraza, Velazquez

OF (5): Judge, Gallo, Stanton, Florial, Allen

========================================

60 day IL: Britton, Andujar, Frazier, Hicks, Locastro, Voit

So that is 36 plus 6, Brantly and Locastro seem like the most likely DFAs to get to 40 assuming they don't pick up the Joely option.

Then they have 12 days to clear 4-5 more spots, Odor and Andujar would be a good start. Tyler Wade is interesting, great versatility and a superb pinch-runner late, but NY is talking about signing a SS plus Peraza is already on the 40 man and Cabrera will likely be added here, so maybe bye bye Tyler too (no Tippecanoe involved).

Bit of a bummer on the latter two, but only so many spaces, I guess.

I'll miss Velazquez a little. Seems like a good kid. Glad he got some run and did well enough with it to catch on with someone else. I hope he sticks with the Angels and can get some playing time.

I am just glad my man Gittens is still around, hopefully that continues to be true.

Are the waivers losses roster logjam necessities, a prelude to bringing free agents along with Correa, or both?

I explained it a few posts up, but right now they’re clearing space for 60 day IL guys and maybe Donny Sands, who can be a minor league FA and sign anywhere if he’s not added by Sunday.

OK, so the rule 5 rosters have to be set a week from Friday, the 19th. NY is here now:

========================================

SP (11): Cole, Taillon, Montgomery, Germán, Severino, Cortes, Schmidt, Gil, Garcia, Medina, Gomez

RP (10): Chapman, Green, Loaisiga, King, Holmes, Cortes, Peralta, Abreu, Nelson, Britton

C (3): Sanchez, Higashioka, Sands

IF (9): Torres, LeMahieu, Urshela, Voit, Wade, Andujar, Odor, Gittens, Peraza

OF (6): Judge, Gallo, Stanton, Hicks, Frazier, Florial

========================================

That is 39 if I haven't forgotten anyone, so NY needs three more spaces by the 19th to add the four guys they definitely need to in Pereira, Ridings, Vazquez and Cabrera. Britton is supposed to be out basically the entire season but is the Yankees union rep heading into a lockout so I guess unlikely he'll be dropped. From a purely baseball sense, protecting 26 year old righty reliever Ron Marinaccio would be a much better use of the 40 man spot, full control over him versus Britton's final year which he will be out for most or all of.

https://www.milb.com/player/ron-marinaccio-676760

If it was me, I would have Andujar, Odor, and Frazier high on the to go list, time to move on. Again, if Odor is such an essential influence, offer him a coaching position but he is not good at actually playing baseball.

NY re-signed Joely Rodriguez for $2M, so now they are at 40 currently and need four spaces at least for Pereira, Ridings, Vazquez and Cabrera. Cashman said today that Britton likely would not pitch at all in 2022, I wonder if they can drop him and not piss him off (he will still get paid of course).

The clock is ticking, rosters need to be set by Friday. TB has more spots to clear than NY, they traded Brousseau to MIL today. Ideally NY can trade for Matt Olson before then and clear all or most of the space that way, but either way they need to start dumping some of the dud position players (Andujar, Odor, Clint) soon.

Also everyone analyzing this situation seems to think Gittens should be on the chopping block, but I strongly disagree. He had a 1.084 OPS in AAA last year, 14 HRs in 146 ABs, is good defensively at 1B and has elite exit velocity, plus he still has two options left.

I think Gittens may be gone if the Yankees get Olson. DJ would be his backup, yeah?

I also wouldn't be shocked if Oakland wanted Gittens more than Voit in a deal for Olson too. Or both. Voit to flip, Gittens to keep.

How much payroll are they going to cut? How far will the tear down go?

I have Gleyber as a primary chip in an Olson deal, so DJ would play 2B and Gittens would be a bench player (Voit dealt also).

He will also be 28 years old when Spring training starts, and posted a 444 OPS in his first 36 major league at bats last year.

Yeah the first I almost mentioned, but the second is pretty unfair, they were very sporadic ABs. I would just like to see him given a chance at 1B if one arises mid-season, and not DFA him and have him turn into Carlos Pena somewhere else.

Also, despite only putting 24 balls in play last year, he had the 8th highest max exit velo of any MLB player last year, his hardest hit ball was harder than any ball Nelson Cruz or Vlad Jr hit all season long.

Only a couple days left before this needs to be set for the rule 5 draft, and some good news this week, ferreted out by a Yankee fan/lawyer who dug into the details of the eligibility rules. Everyone had been operating under the premise that Randy Vazquez needed to be protected, but it turns out that they don't have to until next winter. I am sure the Yankees know this, but that does make it a bit more odd that they agreed to move Vazquez at the deadline (for the TEX reliever whose physical did not pass muster, so that part of the deal was cancelled).

So now I think they're back to 3 guys they need to protect in Pereira, Ridings and Cabrera. Next after them is probably Ron Marinaccio, who is likely to be grabbed if not protected. They have a bunch of options if they don't make a multi-player trade, they could maybe staple Britton and his salary to a prospect, Odor is worthless, Andujar needs to go, Clint Frazier probably needs to go, Wade can likely go if NY is keeping Peraza and Cabrera and signing a pricy SS.

Ridings to the 60 day IL to clear a space for McKay (sent to AAA), they still need a slot for Marwin.
