Domingo Germán was reinstated on the 40 man today because his suspension was up and he had to be, but he will not be pitching this season.

=============================

SP (11): Cole, Tanaka, Happ, Montgomery, Germán, Schmidt, Garcia, Gil, Medina, Yajure, Abreu

RP (10): Chapman, Britton, Ottavino, Green, Cessa, Holder, Loaisiga, King, Nelson, Kriske

C (4): Sanchez, Higashioka, Kratz, Sawyer

IF (8): Torres, LeMahieu, Voit, Urshela, Estrada, Andujar, Ford, Wade

OF (7): Judge, Stanton, Hicks, Gardner, Tauchman, Frazier, Florial

Emergency reserve catcher Wynston Sawyer was dropped from the 40 man, cleared waivers, and is assigned to AAA.

That puts NY at 39 players minus 5 FAs (J.A. Happ, Erik Kratz, DJ LeMahieu, James Paxton, Masahiro Tanaka) with Britton and Gardner up in the air. So that's 34 plus Severino and Heller added back from the IL (this assumes they are not going to pay Kahnle $5M since he will be out most of the year and then a FA), so that puts NY at 36. They need to add I think 5 guys:

Alexander Vizcaino
Oswald Peraza
Roansy Contreras
Yoendrys Gomez
Addison Russ

So that is 41, but they can't keep all those untested and promising young pitchers on the 40 man, I don't think.

So this Friday the 20th, 40 man rosters have to be set before the Rule 5 draft in December. So let's update as much as we know, NY currently has 36 guys on the 40 man:

========================================

SP (11): Cole, Montgomery, Garcia, Germán, Severino, Schmidt, Gil, Medina, Yajure, Abreu

RP (10): Chapman, Britton, Ottavino, Green, Cessa, Holder, Loaisiga, King, Nelson, Kriske, Heller

C (2): Sanchez, Higashioka

IF (7): Torres, Voit, Urshela, Estrada, Andujar, Ford, Wade

OF (6): Judge, Stanton, Hicks, Tauchman, Frazier, Florial

========================================

Like I said above, they need to add I think 5 guys:

Alexander Vizcaino
Oswald Peraza
Roansy Contreras
Yoendrys Gomez
Addison Russ

That is 25 pitchers and 16 position players, I think again it's pretty clear they can't carry this much young pitching that isn't ready to contribute into the season, so they will need to move some guys. Albert Abreu is out of options and has not looked ready which is a strike against him sticking around.

NY officially adds:

Alexander Vizcaino
Oswald Peraza
Roansy Contreras
Yoendrys Gomez

And doesn't DFA anyone.

Addison Russ is the odd man out for NY, they are presumably hoping to sneak him through the rule 5 untaken, but if they lose him, they got him for an already DFAd David Hale this summer, so easy come, easy go.

Rule 5 draft starts today at noon EST, the word on Russ is that his velocity wasn't great in the alternate roster camp this summer, so that's why he wasn't protected and maybe why he won't be selected. NY almost certainly won't take someone but they are likely to lose a bit of their minor league pitching depth in Trevor Stephan or Garret Whitlock or both.

I hate seeing this, but at the same time I'm happy the Yankees have the kind of farm system where it is a problem.

Edit: And I feel like I need to say this once a year or so: Thanks, Jon for following this stuff so closely and keeping us all informed.

You got it, EE!

So the rule 5 draft is really two drafts, one right after the other, both of which are done now. The Major League phase is the one we pay more attention to, those guys need to stay on the 26 man roster all season or be offered back. The minor league phase, when guys are selected, they are gone for good. NY took a bit of a depth beating in both, but may get some of the first three back:

MLB phase

- Lose Garrett Whitlock to Boston
- Lose Kyle Holder to Philly
- Lose Trevor Stephan to Cleveland

MiLB phase

- Lose RHP Matt Wivinis to Texas
- Add LHP Matt Krook from Tampa Bay
- Lose RHP Kaleb Ort to Boston
- Add Reggie McLain from Philly
- Lose C Gustavo Campero to LAA
- Lose OF Ben Ruta to San Diego

Krook seems possibly intriguing although he is very wild, but he was part of the Longoria to SF deal a few years back.

NY is not done making moves as they have 41 guys once they announce DJ and Kluber, but here is where they are for now:

========================================

SP (13): Cole, Kluber, Taillon, Montgomery, Garcia, Germán, Severino, Schmidt, Gil, Medina, Vizcaino, Gomez, Abreu

RP (10): Chapman, Britton, Ottavino, Green, Cessa, Loaisiga, King, Nelson, Kriske, Heller

C (2): Sanchez, Higashioka

IF (9): Torres, LeMahieu, Voit, Urshela, Estrada, Andujar, Ford, Wade, Peraza

OF (7): Judge, Stanton, Hicks, Tauchman, Frazier, Florial, Allen

========================================

Allen is disposable, Abreu really needs to be moved (out of options and not good enough to make the team), there's a good chance they will move Ottavino to clear his salary, so they have some options.

NY sends Ottavino to BOS, so they are at 40 again, but likely still more moves to come (Gardner probably and possibly another reliever).

Gardner move probably supplants Allen. If they want to improve the bullpen, they need to make a tough choice or another trade. 2 prospects for 1 ace bullpen arm. Isn't it that easy?

Looking ahead a bit here and wondering where NY stands with 40 man spots...

If they need to add all three of Bruce, Dietrich and Luetge, where will those 40 man spots come from? One seems like it has to be Tauchman, who is out of options. One can be Britton to the 60 day IL. And the third I still think needs to be Cessa, who gave up yet another run today, but maybe Abreu or another 60 day IL candidate (Andujar?).

Also Gittens with a couple of insane exit velocities so far this spring (118.8 today!!) probably puts Ford's 40 man spot more in danger, with Bruce jumping him also.

Gittens was the AA league MVP in 2019 for Trenton and hasn't been protected or selected in two rule 5 drafts since (I was nervous here about him before both), but he just turned 27 and seems like he may have found a rare gear, he is only the sixth hitter since 2015 to hit a ball that hard and he had. Today's was a groundout but earlier this spring he had a 114.4 grand slam that still hasn't landed.

https://www.mlb.com/yankees/video/chris-gittens-hits-a-grand-slam-1-to-left-center-field-socrates-brito-scores-tre?tcid=podium_nyy

Ford has two options left and had literally the best OPS of any hitter in MLB against LHP in 2019, just ahead of JDM, even more impressive when you remember he is a LHH. Maybe Cashman can get something back for him (and Tauchman, and Cessa, make it happen Brian).

I didn't update this, NY added Bruce and Luetge and in order to not lose anyone, put Schmidt and Britton on the 60 day IL, even though there's a good chance Britton would be ready at least a bit before then.

========================================

SP (11): Cole, Kluber, Taillon, Montgomery, Garcia, Germán, Gil, Medina, Vizcaino, Gomez, Abreu

RP (10): Chapman, Green, O'Day, Wilson, Loaisiga, King, Nelson, Luetge, Cessa, Kriske

C (2): Sanchez, Higashioka

IF (10): Torres, LeMahieu, Voit, Urshela, Bruce, Estrada, Andujar, Ford, Wade, Peraza

OF (7): Judge, Stanton, Hicks, Frazier, Gardner, Tauchman, Florial

60 day IL (3): Severino, Britton, Schmidt

Odor added means NY needs to make a 40 man move later today, I am hoping it is a DFA of Mike Ford who might not even get claimed.

This was Thairo's last year with an option, now they have added Odor through 2022 (hopefully) and they just got back Holder from the Reds who is a stud defensive SS, plus Wade still. I really like Thairo (he came back from being shot in the thigh as if nothing happened!) and think he could definitely blossom somewhere given a chance but that will seemingly now be elsewhere. Presumably NY will get something in return for him, and the wheel rolls on.

Also I wonder what this means for Dietrich, I would think he would opt out immediately since Odor just jumped him but he was in the lineup against the alt-Phillies today (they have started 18 informal games against each other).

Oh, and my man Oswald Peraza, he is probably still a year away but is a top 100 prospect and already on the 40 man, which might put him ahead of Holder in an emergency. He also could hold his own defensively already from the little we saw this spring.

I like the Odor acquisition for the Yankees. It's better when they have players who are easy to hate.

Sure, if you want to hate the guy who threw possibly the best punch in the history of MLB (my friend is both a boxing and MLB historian and he says this is #1 that he has ever seen):

Thairo Estrada claimed by the Giants and sent to them for 'cash considerations', disappointing end to his NY career. Good luck, dude.

NY just traded Tauchman to the Giants for 29 year old reliever Wandy Peralta, who has an option remaining and seems like emergency depth in the bullpen.

Yeah, NY is semi desperate for a warm body who can play CF in addition to Gardner.

As long as this thread was bumped, let's update NY's 40 man situation:

SP (10): Cole, Kluber, Taillon, Montgomery, Garcia, Germán, Gil, Medina, Vizcaino, Gomez

RP (12): Chapman, Green, O'Day, Wilson, Loaisiga, King, Nelson, Luetge, Cessa, Peralta, Abreu, Kriske

C (2): Sanchez, Higashioka

IF (9): Torres, LeMahieu, Voit, Urshela, Odor, Andujar, Ford, Wade, Peraza

OF (7): Judge, Stanton, Hicks, Frazier, Gardner, LaMarre, Florial

60 day IL (3): Severino, Britton, Schmidt

=================================

Most vulnerable guys to being dropped/moved at this moment?

LaMarre isn't good when healthy, not sure of the rules about DFAing him if he is hurt.

Ford is now behind both Voit and DJ at 1B, Andujar can play there also, but Cashman seems to have irrational love for him.

Kriske has no history of MLB success and has been getting shelled in AAA.

And Hicks can go to the 60 day if he is out long-term, but they are trying to hold off doing that until they're sure he'll be out a while.
