In the simulacrum
My in laws are from upstate New York and while they are not Bills fans there are a ton of people in their circle of family, friends and acquaintances who are. They have been some of the most aggressively dumb and obnoxious people in my life over things like deflategate. I cannot fathom ever rooting for the Bills. If they are ever good again I hope they lose four more Super Bowls in a row.
This. I am in upstate now and have had the same experience. What a bunch of tools.

In contrast, when I briefly lived in NE Ohio I thought the football fans I knew were downright cerebral and they generally maintained high regard for Belichick (there was some regret there) and knew all the deflategate stuff was BS.

Go Browns.

In the Dolphins game thread, a bunch of posters reflected on how the Dolphins, all these years later, remain their most hated team. Not so for me. I like Flo, am intrigued by Tua (and love Fitz, of course), and respect how they're going about their business. Plus Shula is dead, so he's not around around to enjoy any of this.

My most hated team is by far the Chiefs, because of my familiarity with the deplorable at Chiefs Planet... the most despicable sewer around. Do like Mahomes and Reid, but the rest of that team, and their fan base, can go straight to hell. After that, Ravens and Pittsburgh are the two teams I cannot allow to have any success. And the Jets, for what that's worth. Hate the Colts ownership enough to hate the team, but I think the team is actually pretty cool.

I'll root for Cleveland, probably the Bills. Nothing against the Titans, but I just don't enjoy watching Titans games.

Bucs or Browns.
I have relatives in KC and I wish I could root for them because they're loaded with talent, but I just can't.

Edit; D'oh! Missed the "AFC."

I’ve written this before but it’s a damn good thing the Pats beat KC in 2018 because we might otherwise have been looking at Brady 5 Mahomes 3 after this year. So yeah anyone but KC, even if that means the Steelers.

Concur. I hate how it’s like the domestic abuse never happened - it’s never mentioned in the broadcast, because he’s fast, or something. Our societal priorities are whack.

Even when I chat with semi-knowledgeable football fans, most are aware of the incident when he was college, but the “you should be terrified of me, b - - - -“ message & kid with broken arm aren’t even common knowledge.

So nuts to football, I’m gonna go watch Rick and Morty, and play Dungeons and Dragons.

Well it's all about perspective.

I'd venture to guess you weren't a Patriots fan in the 1970's/1980's.........football was, is and always will be my favorite sport and as a result, the Patriots are and will always be my favorite team. In the 1970's, around here it was Red Sox first, the Bruins took this town by storm in the early to mid 1970's, the Celtics did the same once Bird arrived.

The Patriots were mostly a laughing stock, a traveling circus the first 10 years or so as an organization, then they played at that shithole of a stadium in foxboro with the metal benches and the field that was as bad as the parking lot, astro turf slapped over asphalt. All you saw around here were Dolphins, Steelers, Cowboys, Redskins,
Giants and 49ers jackets, hardly ever any Patriots jackets.

The Dolphins and that crybaby Shula owned the Patriots for years right up until the Squish the Fish game, then the worm turned.

If you didn't live through it, it's hard to understand it.

Yeah I grew up a 70s Pats fan (and obviously forever thereafter) and Miami was THE team to hate. Second was the Raiders. I've never liked Miami - from their great 70s teams to Marino and Shula all the way through, to their stupid wins over the Pats even during the Dynasty era, and every year them popping champagne when the last undefeated team loses. I can't stand that franchise and could never root for them, with the sole exception being if somehow Miami winning really helped the Pats in some way.

I agree with the hate for the Dolphins franchise; the stench of Shula lasts a long time among Pats fans. I do hope Flores succeeds just enough to get wrongfully fired for some retread coach that the owner likes, and subsequently joins Arizona or Tampa and guides them to a Super Bowl win. Among teams in the playoff hunt:

AFC teams I will pull for:

Bills - Usually didn't hate them despite being a division rival, except when Gregg Williams and then Rex Ryan were there.
Titans - Always wanted the Oilers to knock out the Steelers back in the '70's, and they got so close in 1999. Plus Vrabel.
Browns - Good story.
Chiefs - I'm a Mahomes fan, so no issue with KC whatsoever.

AFC in the playoff hunt teams I will never root for no matter what:

Dolphins
Steelers
Colts
Ravens
Raiders
Jets (except for them to lose the Tank for Trevor sweepstakes)

NFC teams I will pull for this go around (no particular order):

Saints
Seattle
Bucs
Cardinals

NFC teams I am neutral on:

Packers
Vikings
Rams

NFC teams I will not root for no matter what:

Bears - 46-10 still stings
Any of the NFC East teams.

But the team I would most like to see win it all is the Cardinals even though they have very little chance. Murray is fun to root for and it would be awesome to see Fitz win a championship.

Jets and Houston, plus LV. The Raiders were kind of my second team growing up, until Roughing the Passer (may Ben Drieth rot in hell).

Cleveland of the AFC teams, and - maybe Seattle in the NFC? Both kind of cases of "not the other guys, please..."

Edit: Both the Cards and Saints would be okay as well

There is no team n the AFC that I can root for. If pushed I’d say Titans, then I think of Bobby Wade. In the NFC, strangely I hate the Eagles way way more than the Giants, but also can’t stand the Packers. Will definitely cheer for the NFC over the Chiefs.

I think a bit that fantasy football has created a generational divide, too, where watching the league as a whole is more a thing for people who play than don't. The Patriots are my favorite team in my favorite sport and them getting bounced has had years that devastated me, but outside of a select few teams I don't have many strong hates. Watching 6-10 hours of football every Sunday there's plenty of players around the league I enjoy rooting for and while I'm not strongly invested in those teams' outcomes I'll be interested in their playoff games.

I've got some holdover hard feelings against the Colts and Jets from the 90s & early Brady years. The Chiefs and Steelers employ garbage people and have some NE legacy threat value. Other than that, eh. The Bills and Titans haven't won shit ever. Josh Allen's likeable as hell. Vrabel danced around the field after literally ending the Brady/Bill run - I'd dare call it deserved. I'm pissed as anyone that this season sucked but I'm glad there's another month and a half of the NFL. Even with the Ravens it's 6-2 and Sony "Super Bowl Champ" Michel what-ifs are my only negative feelings toward LJ.

Short of Chiefs-Steelers and Steelers-Giants there's really no potential matchup I won't have some level of interest in.

I like Mahomes and Reid but it's too bad that team employs Tyreek Hill (and the disgusting free pass he gets from everyone) and Frank Clark,. They'er out. Pittsburgh, Indy, Baltimore and Miami are out for obvious reasons. That leaves the Bills, Titans and Browns in the AFC. I probably like the Titans the most of that group and would pull for Vrabel. The Bills might have the best chance of knocking off KC so I'd pull for them in that scenario. The loveable losers turned playoff team Browns for some reason don't do it for me. Maybe it's Mayfield's constant ads on TV.

In the NFC, I guess Tampa but I'll admit to feeling some joy this year when the Bucs have lost so I don't know if I can stay on that bandwagon. I can't stand teh Packers or Saints so they're out. I used to hate Seattle more but I do like Russ and find Carroll amusing. Still, they're probably out. WFT is a fun story but they don't have a chance. That leaves the Rams and Cardinals among the current playoff teams. There's very little endearing about the LA Rams. McVay is a good coach, Goff sucks. Meh. So I guess give me the Cardinals. Kyler Murray is entertaining as hell, they have DeAndre Hopkins outside and also the aging hall of famer without a ring storyline with Larry Fitzgerald. Give me the Cardinals.

Tennessee is cool.

Sticking strictly to the AFC East, I dislike the Miami fans and ownership, but kind of like the players and coach. In Buffalo, I dislike the ownership, am kind of indifferent to the players/coach, but really like the fans even if the Bills Mafia thing is stupid. Would be happy to see each team win a game in the post season, but one game only (unless their second game is against KC, Pittsburgh, Baltimore or Indy) in which case they can win a second game.

The KC fanbase booing the players who asked for a moment of silence to recognize black victims of police violence is something that I won't forget for a long time. Could you IMAGINE if fans in Boston did that??? I've wandered on to Chief's Planet but I'd like to think they were not the majority viewpoint of the fanbase, but I can't really justify that anymore. Mahome is very likeable; Reid was enjoyable last year as the guy who finally shed his punchline status to be recognized as the brilliant football mind that he is. Outside of that, there isn't a whole lot to like about KC, so I'll be rooting for anybody except them or Pittsburgh.

One thing I don't want to be is to become a Pittsburgh fan who becomes threatened by the success of future generations of teams. I'm not worried that Mahomes is going to one day pass Brady as the GOAT; if one day he manages to set all sorts of career records and win six super bowls, he will deserve all of those accolades. It won't make what Brady did feel any less special or significant.

I grew up *in Foxboro* in the 80s, and the Starter jackets of those teams were definitely more popular than the Pats. It cracks me up, because now all my high school classmates are rabid Pats fans. But I don't forget that a lot of them used to profess to be fans of other teams, particularly in the '89-'92 time frame, when the franchise was at its nadir.

Almost any team that isn't Pittsburgh or Baltimore, but especially Buffalo, Tennessee, and Cleveland.

I really like what Flores is doing in Miami--but their fans are nearly as insufferable as Cowboys and Steelers fans, Shula was a miserable asshole and a jealous prick toward BB, and the '72 team is among the most overrated in pro sports, so I can barely get behind them in a half hearted way. Indy just doesn't seem ready--but I like the team.

KC is tough for all of the reasons mentioned: Reid is super likable, and Mahomes is a transcendent talent, but any team that employs Tyreek Hill and Frank Clark is a non starter for me.
LV I couldn't care less about one way or the other. Gruden's schtick is insufferable, but the team looks to be at least a year away from even potentially threatening KC, never mind the conference as a whole.

Couldn’t care less about who comes out of the AFC. I’m still rooting for The GOAT in Tampa.
More or less this for me too. It would amuse me to no end if, say, the Bills made the Super Bowl and then Brady beat them. Same for KC, Pitt, or Baltimore (if they even make the playoffs).

If I had to pick a team to root for in the AFC it would be Tennessee pretty easily, though - I like Vrabel and the Titans just don't really have anyone I dislike on their team. I'm neutral on the Browns (although I don't really like Mayfield) and the Raiders if they make it. I'm very conflicted on the Bills because I simultaneously feel bad for and hate their fans. I'd probably root for the Dolphins over Bills because of Flores and the fact that Miami is more of an underdog this year. I don't particularly mind the Chiefs and they are very exciting to watch, but I just can't root for a behemoth like that team when it's not the Pats and the total media whitewash of Tyreek Hill remains infuriating to me given the silly, not-actually-life-affecting stuff people still take the Patriots to task for. And I would never root for the Colts, Steelers, or Baltimore under any circumstances.

I have very few thoughts on the NFC except a mild preference for Brady and a mild preference against anyone from the NFC East, although a team with a losing regular-season record winning or even making the Super Bowl would be hilarious.

This is really more about which teams you don't want to win and in what order. In other words, who is least offensive to me spirtually.

1. Steelers - No way do I want them to reclaim title of sole-holder the SB Champion throne, so **** 'em.
2. Ravens - Cause **** them too.
3. Colts - Cause **** them harder.
4. Dolphins - They're the Dolphins.
5. Chiefs - They don't really bother me all that much, but back to back SB wins just irritates me if it's not the Pats.
6. Bills - I've got some friends who are Bills fans. I don't like them all that much. I don't hate them either which is why they're sixth.
7. Titans - Don't get me wrong. I like Vrabel. I always wish him well. But they knocked the Pats out of the playoffs last year. There are consequences.
8. Browns - Probably who I'm "rooting" for if for no reason other than if they do get to the SB, they're not going to win it.

The Browns making the Super Bowl would be glorious if for no other reason than we all know they'd lose the game in the most gut punch/nut punch/absolutely improbable way possible; a franchise that has "the drive", "the fumble", the greatest coach in NFL history at the helm and then goes down the toilet once the move is announced only to move to another city and go on to win two Super Bowls on their resume won't disappoint.

No Pittsburgh, no KC. Anyone else is fine with me.

I could live with a Buffalo SB win. Back in the bad old days (let's put it this way, OJ was playing) the seats my old man got me were always in the visitor's section. The Buffalo gang would leave on buses in the middle of the night and arrive in Foxboro completely tanked up. Some incredible fights were almost a sure thing. I remember bailing my buddy out at the Foxboro police station and there would be a half dozen Buffalo buses waiting for their boys to be bailed out. Dedicated fans.
And this was long before the Super Bowl nightmares.

I have so many teams I am hoping finish wit a 2 game winning streak: Raiders, Broncos, Bears, Vikings, Chargers, Lions, WFT, Giants, Cowboys, 49ers, Texans, Panthers, Falcons, and Eagles.

You know who else I am going to be rooting for? The Bills and the Jets.

It's draft season and this roster needs a ton of turnover. Unfortunately the elite talent drops off at around 8-10 in this draft class. Right now they are set to pick 15th. the best case scenario for them is to pick somewhere in 9-12 range.

Let's look at draft positioning and how they are likely to finish.

1. JAX: 1-13, .556 SOS, Wk16 vs CHI (L), Wk17 At IND (L) projected final record: 1-15
2. NYJ: 1-13, .598 SOS, Wk16 vs CLE (L), Wk17 At NEP (W) projected final record: 1-15 or 2-14.*
3. CIN: 3-10-1, .538 SOS, Wk16 At HOU (L), Wk17 vs BAL (L) projected final record: 3-13-1
4. CAR: 4-10, .531 SOS, Wk16 At WAS (L), Wk17 vs NO (L) projected final record: 4-12
5. ATL: 4-10, .536 SOS, Wk16 At KC (L), Wk17 At TB (L) projected final record: 4-12
6. HOU/MIA: 4-10, .552 SOS, Wk16 vs CIN (W), Wk17 vs TEN (W)** projected final record: 6-10
7. PHL: 4-9-1, .529 SOS, Wk16 At DAL (W), Wk17vs Was (?)*** projected final record: 5-10-1 or 6-9-1
8. DAL: 5-9, .475 SOS, Wk16 vs PHL (L), Wk17 At NYG (L) projected final record: 5-11
9: LAC: 5-9, .482 SOS, Wk16 vs DEN (W), Wk17 At KC (W)**** projected final record: 7-9
10. NYG: 5-9, .502 SOS, Wk16 At BAL (L), Wk17 vs DAL (W) projected final record: 6-10
11. DET: 5-9, .509 SOS, Wk16 vs TB (L), Wk17 vs MIN (L) projected final record: 5-11
12. SF: 5-9, .549 SOS, Wk16 At ARI (L), Wk17 vs SEA (L) projected final record: 5-11
13. DEN: 5-9, .561 SOS, Wk16 At LAC (L), Wk17 vs LV (L) projected final record: 5-11
14. MIN: 6-8, .504 SOS, Wk16 At NO (L), Wk17 At DET (W) projected final record: 7-9
15. NEP: 6-8, .522 SOS, Wk16 vs BUF (L), Wk17 vs NYJ (L) projected final record: 6-10
16. CHI: 7-7, .491 SOS, Wk16 At JAX (W), Wk17 at GB (L) projected final record: 8-8
17. LV: 7-7, .536 SOS, Wk16 vs MIA (L), Wk17 at DEN (W) projected final record: 8-8

* Here is why I think the Jets can win this game. 1) They already almost beat us. 2) With Becton back they are going to be able to run on the Pats and well. When he was in the game last time they ran behind him and he destroyed our edges. 3) Our edges can't set an edge. 4) NYJ receivers are healthy and NEP will be down Gilmore. 5) It might be Stidham's first or second game starting. 6) BB might play the younger guys in more extended looks to see how they do/give them some experience. 7) While BB would never tank a season he has rested starters before in the last game of the season when the game wasn't meaningful to either side.
** TEN is likely going to bench their starters and give themselves a mini-bye week since they should be locked into the 4th seed.
*** Think WAS rests their starters
**** KC rests their starters

Projected final standings:

1. JAX 1-15 (Need a QB)
2. NYJ 2-14 (Probably a QB)
3. CIN 2-13-1
4. CAR 4-12 (Maybe QB)
5. ATL 4-12 (Maybe QB)
6. DAL 5-11
7. DET 5-11 (Maybe QB)
8. SF 5-11 (Maybe QB)
9. DEN 5-11 (Maybe QB)
10. NYG 6-10
11. NEP 6-10
12. HOU/MIA 6-10
13. PHL 6-9-1
14. LAC 7-9
15. MIN 7-9
16. CHI 8-8
17. LV 8-8

Unless the Pats finish 0-2 it's going to be hard to pick higher than 15th. 7 of the top 9 teams might need a QB.

I think this is amusing, and in a way it is flattering.
Agreed. If Patriots fans had won, and assuming, as I think was the case, you don't get a choice of what words go up on the billboard, what would be this board's choice of location? My initial thought is the most prominent possible place in Pittsburgh because those fans seem to be triggered by the Pats' success more than any others. But it also would have been fun to go a totally random route, like putting the billboard in Juneau, Alaska or Hawaii or something.

Most Bills fans I personally know are diehards, defeatists, and very good people. But their fanbase as a whole, as judged from trips I've made to their prison yard of a stadium, is atrocious. It's hard to reconcile.

Same experience with individual fans.
